Getting Out
Just before lunch time I bundled Zoë and Abby up for a walk into town. Zoë got to ride in the stroller while Abby stayed close to me in the sling. After checking our post office mail, we stopped in to say hi to "Nanny Louise" at her work. We were just in time, as she was about to have her lunch break. After a quick look around the store, we all walked back to the house together for some yummy lunch.

Uncle Corey's First Snugli
Auntie Reanna and Uncle Corey came over this afternoon. The temperature warmed up to 40 degrees today, so we decided to take a walk. Since most of the sidewalks are still snow covered we figured putting Abby and Zoë in snugli's would be the best idea. Corey had never worn the snugli before, so he got a chance to try it out. I helped get Zoë into Corey's snugli and then put Abby into mine. He enjoyed his cuddly walk, even though his back was hurting when we returned home. He told Reanna that when they have a baby of their own, she can carry it for the first nine months, and then he can carry it for the next nine months.

Yogurt Sugar High
Laura has been feeding the girls baby yogurt lately and they love it. They share 2 flavors in a sitting, so each of them get one whole serving during their snack time. Ever since they started eating the yogurt they would get cranky and angry when it was all finished. This amused us how they wanted more, no craved more. So after today’s episode I asked Laura about the contents of this baby yogurt. She read over the all natural ingredients. The second ingredient was naturally milled sugar, 16 grams of sugar per serving. I looked it up online, and it translated to about 4 teaspoons of sugar per serving. I went into the kitchen and measured out 4 teaspoons of sugar onto a plate and showed Laura. No wonder the girls go crazy for this snack, and get angry when they finish 2 containers for snack time. I decided that they are getting too much sugar from this feed and have banned the yogurt. They will now be eating regular whole milk organic yogurt, which we will add some fresh fruit or 100% juice to flavor. At least there wasn’t any high fructose corn syrup.

Power Outage
We were without power for the last 2 hours. It was nice and quiet in the house, the girls were asleep and Laura and I played some dominos. We were wondering when the power was going to come back on. It felt like the Stone Age times, no phone, electricity, computers, nothing, well almost. We were relying on the clock tower outside to tell us what time it was. The power came back on just in time for the girls snack and to turn on the heat. It was getting cold in the house, but at least we didn't have to worry about the food in the fridge going bad.

Abby Accident
While crawling around the floor today with a book, Abby slipped and fell. She did not let go of her book to catch herself. There was a loud thud and smack noise as the book and her head hit the floor. She must have bit her top lip because as soon as she opened her mouth to cry, there was blood everywhere. Laura was absolutely freaked out by the blood and wailing and I came running to see what had happened and assess the damage. While Laura got her a pacifier and some baby Tylenol I checked on Zoë only to see that she took the opportunity to raid the computer station, and bang the camera on the phone repeatedly. She is such an opportunist, that when Abby had recovered and was being changed, Zoë crawled over and took her pacifier from her mouth. We then gave Abby the cold pacifier from the freezer for her now very swollen upper lip. The bleeding stopped fairly quickly after the Tylenol and some cuddles. This was our first bloody accident experience. We were both sick to our stomachs. Laura still is.

Abby, sweetie. I hope you are okay now. Uncle Matt hurt his lip when he was learning to walk, fell onto a hassock and bled like crazy, I called the doctor and walked him to the doctors just to be sure everything was okay and it was. I was sooo upset. But all was well. Mom and dad have to get ready, there is going to be other accidents, right Uncle Matt, Aunt Elizabeth and Daddy.

Celebrating Laura's Birthday
Grampy Tom, Linda, Uncle Corey and Aunt Reanna came over today to celebrate my birthday. The girls got to watch me blow out my candles. Chris made a double layer chocolate cake with mousse in between the layers, topped with a whipped cream frosting and ganache. The girls enjoyed spending time with everyone.

Nanny for Lunch
Nanny Louise just started her new job downtown Portsmouth. She stopped by today during her lunch break to visit her little sweethearts. The girls were happy to see her, it has been a while since the last visit. The girls showed off their hot steppin'. With a grilled cheese and some soup and a few cuddles, Nanny Louise didn't want to go back to work. She called shortly after leaving, as she was lost downtown and couldn't find her way back to work.

Tasty Treats from Daddy
When I got the girls up from their afternoon nap they saw Chris eating peanut butter cracker sandwiches. He let them taste a little and they, of course, wanted more. He made them their own peanut butter crackers for their snack, and they ate them all up. Later in the day Chris made pizza for dinner. It was still cooking when they were ready to eat so I gave them some stuff to munch on. I thought that they were starting to be done eating, but as soon as Chris put some of his home made pizza on their trays they devoured it! They wanted more and more and more.

Snow Tub
Zoë and Abby have been admiring the snow through the windows for the past week. We've been wanting to bundle them up and bring them out to play in it, but it has just been way too cold. Today we decided to bring the snow in to them. I got them both into their snow suits, while Chris collected a couple of buckets full of snow. After I had Abby and Zoë in the tub Chris put one of the buckets in. Zoë dug right in, trying to pick the snow up with her mitten covered hands. Chris dumped out the other bucket for them to crawl around in. Abby immediately tried to climb out of the tub, while Zoë continued to try and figure out a way to eat it. It was fun to see their first reactions to the fluffy white stuff.

First PB & J Sandwich
Today I made Abby and Zoë their first peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We had the okay to try nut products at their one year appointment, but have been waiting to make sure that they did alright with the fish and egg first. I spread some peanut butter on their wheat bread very thinly, and then spread a tiny bit of raspberry jelly on to help the stickiness a little. They both grabbed up the first piece I put on their tray and shoved it into their mouths. They hesitated after first tasting it... something different than their usual baba ghannouj and cheese. They must have decided they liked it, since they both finished it all up.

Sixteen Layers of chocolaty goodness
The girls love to watch us cook. We found a recipe for a 16 layer cake, and decided to try it. Laura loves chocolate, and the cake turned out great. Here is the
recipe from food.com.
Summary Difficulty: Medium
Prep Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
Inactive Prep Time: 3 hours 30 minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes
Yield: 16 to 20 servings
Chocolate Cake:
10 eggs, separated
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
1 1/4 cups powdered sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 cup almond meal
1/2 teaspoon salt
Coffee Syrup:
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon instant espresso
Chocolate Mousse:
1 cup water
1 cup sugar
9 egg yolks
1 pound bittersweet chocolate, melted
2 cups heavy cream, whipped
Chocolate Ganache, recipe follows
Cocoa powder
To prepare the chocolate cake: preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Butter 4 (12 by 18 by 1/2-inch) baking sheets, line with parchment paper and butter paper. In a mixing bowl, combine the egg yolks and granulated sugar. Cook over a double boiler while whisking until triple in volume, and until the mixture reaches 110 degrees F. In another mixing bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks. Add the powdered sugar, a little at a time, and continue to beat until stiff but still shiny.
Whisk 1/4 of the meringue into the egg yolk mixture. Gently fold the remaining meringue into the mixture. Combine the flour, cocoa, almond meal and salt. Sift and gently fold into the egg mixture, a little at a time. Divide evenly into the 4 buttered baking sheets and with an offset spatula, spread evenly. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or spongy and cooked. Reserve and allow to cool completely.
To prepare the Coffee Syrup: in a saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a boil for 2 minutes. Turn off heat and stir in instant espresso. Reserve until needed.
To prepare the Chocolate Mousse: in a saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a boil. Lower to a simmer and reserve. In a mixing bowl, using a whisk, whip the egg yolks on high speed until light and ribbony. Lower the speed and whisk in the hot syrup. Continue to beat until slightly cool. Fold in the melted chocolate and lastly, fold in the whipped cream. Reserve until needed.
To assemble the 16 layer cake: Cut each cake into 2 pieces horizontally. Place the first layer on a piece of cardboard. Brush with some of the coffee simple syrup. Spread 1/8 of the chocolate mousse evenly over the cake. Top with another layer of genoise and repeat the process until you have 8 layers of genoise brushed with coffee simple syrup and chocolate mousse. Chill for 2 hours. Trim off about 1/4-inch from all the sides with a serrated knife that has been dipped in hot water. Pour the ganache over the top of the cake, and using an offset spatula, spread the ganache to evenly cover the top and sides of the cake. Refrigerate for 20 minutes, or until the chocolate hardens. Dust the top with cocoa powder.
Chocolate Ganache:
2 cups heavy cream
10 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
Bring the cream to a simmer in a heavy saucepan. Place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Pour the cream over the chocolate and whisk until the mixture is smooth. Cool slightly.

Tiny Testers
Abby and Zoë are really testing their limits lately, especially today. I put two boxes in the doorway into the kitchen to keep the girls in the living room last night. This morning I put them both in the living room and went into the kitchen to make their breakfast. I looked over after putting Zoë into her high chair and Abby was climbing on top of the box and getting ready to go over. I quickly grabbed her up and then buckled her into her high chair. Later on in the day I was sitting with Abby on the floor and Zoë was playing nearby under exersaucer. I looked up to see our tall floor lamp beginning to tip over with the help of Zoë. Chris grabbed it and whisked Zoë over to play with me and her sissy. It has been a heart stopping day.

I made tofu with dinner for the first time tonight. We had it in a stir fry with noodles and veggies. I wondered how Zoë and Abby would react to it, if they would eat it up since it is pretty bland, or take a while to accept it. Abby was cautious and took a little while to start eating it, but then ate a good portion. Zoë tasted and spit it out a few times, but then ate hers all up, as well as some of Abby's. Children's Museum
Today was the monthly "Mommy Avenue Meet-up". We met at the Children's Museum of Portsmouth. There was a special area way up at the top of the building for babies/toddlers. (Not the best placement for a baby or toddlers, in my opinion) The area was full of fun things for the kids. There wasn't a huge turnout from the group, but there were many other kids filing in and out. Abby, Morgan, (The organizers' youngest daughter, who is just two days younger than Zoë and Abby) and Zoë stuck pretty much to the center of the room. There was a circle "mirror" on the floor, and many fun things for them to shake and bang. Zoë and Morgan passed a play cookie back and forth, and they all watched each other as they tested out the different toys. Abby kept wandering over to a train table and crawling underneath. They found many things to keep themselves entertained for a good hour. They wore themselves out and went right down for a nap when we got back home.

While Abby was happily bouncing away in her jumper watching Chris at the computer, I bundled Zoë and myself up and we walked to the fish market. Zoë looked at all of the shrimp in the holding tanks and the other seafood behind the glass. We brought our fish home and, after their evening nap, gave them some with dinner. Zoë tasted it and moved on to her veggies. Abby had her first taste and tried a little more. We also steamed some brociflower we found at our last grocery store visit (It is broccoli bred with cauliflower). Neither girl had much of an appetite at dinner and so didn't try much of the new food. We will offer them some more tomorrow, when their appetites will hopefully be back to normal.

Both Zoë and Abby like to crawl around the "diaper station" while the other is being changed. They will crawl part of the way onto the changing pad and keep each other entertained. They just laugh and laugh as they give kisses and investigate each other's belly buttons. The really funny part is that when the first to be changed is done and crawls off of the pad, the other will crawl right on to it, despite the fact that they don't like to sit still for their diaper changes. It's just too funny.

They are finding so many things to pull up on to stand. They will wander over to their toys every now and then, but are mostly just happy to explore. Both girls have realized that they can pull up on part of Chris' computer station and watch him as he moves the mouse around. And they, of course, are eager to help him. It started snowing lightly early this morning and picked up quickly. We took Abby and Zoë out in it for a quick car ride to Wal-Mart. After we got back it started accumulating even faster. As we brought the girls in from the car they tilted their heads up to peek out from under their hoods at all of the snow falling. Teeth Grinding
Abby has recently started grinding her two top teeth against her two bottom teeth. I cannot stand this sound, or the feeling whenever my own teeth accidentally scrape each other. It makes me cringe every time she does it, which was constantly today. Every time she did it I would try to stick my finger in between her teeth and give her a teether toy to chomp on. I hope she outgrows this quickly!

Girls: your nonno has also been known to grind his teeth while sleeping... I would have to give him a good poke in the ribs.
Stonyfield Farms Contest
Laura has just sent photos of the girls to the
Stonyfield Farms YoBaby contest. We are hoping that they will make it into the semi-finals, where the public will then be able to vote for a winner. The winner gets a $5000 savings bond and a photo shoot, to be on the YoBaby container. We sent in entries for each girl separately, but wouldn't mind if they both were chosen together. Laura is already beside herself on which one to vote for.

One Step at a Time
Zoë and Abby are taking more and more steps every day. Today there were a few times when Zoë took a step, stopped and maintained her balance, and then did a controlled sit down to get a toy she wanted. Abby made so many attempts at walking. They are getting closer and closer to walking all on their own!

Corn Bread Princesses
Today Daddy made his girls corn bread. He gave each Abby and Zoë a little square at their afternoon snack. They shoveled it in just as fast as their little hands could grab it up off of their trays. He has dubbed them his corn bread princesses.

Salon Day
Laura took the girls to their first visit to the salon. It was actually Laura's appointment, but the girls went along. Laura donated her 10 inches of hair to the
locks of love organization. The girls sat patiently and watched. They didn't know what to make of the whole production, or of how Laura looks now. Laura claims they are now staring at her trying to figure out what happened to her long hair.

Nanny Jen and Steve Visit
After a day full of cooking Abby and Zoë got to see our long lost "nanny" and her boyfriend Steve. It took Abby just a few moments after they arrived to go to Jen, Zoë leaned away from me and reached to Jen right away. It took a little longer for them to warm up to Steve but they crawled around him and shared their toys. We had a nice short visit, and are hoping to see them again very soon.

Peek A Boo Gigglefest
We just witnessed the funniest thing yet. Both Abby and Zoë were in their play yard on opposite sides of the laugh and learn home. It seemed that they wanted to play peek a boo with each other. One would peek around or through the house, and the other would giggle and move out of view, and then switch. They both ended up giggling so much, while hustling around their house. It was so funny both Laura and I had a good chuckle ourselves. They then proceeded to chase each other around the house, only stopping to giggle.
