Fruit Yogurt

The girls have been back on the yogurt kick. We are now using regular whole milk non flavored yogurt. Laura has been mixing in frozen fruit and blending it all up. Raspberries, strawberries and blueberries, the girls like their afternoon yogurt snack.

Pilates Coach

I was doing my pilates workout while Abby and Zoë had their afternoon nap, when Zoë woke up early. I brought her downstairs to play while I tried to finish my workout. At first all she wanted to do was play with the laptop that was on the floor. She giggled at the instructor on the screen and then came over to "help" me. I helped her do one of the sets, and she laughed and laughed. It was so cute to see her little itty bitty body "working out" with Mommy.

Tool Box Helper

Abby was watching me intently take apart the little space heater this morning. It was making this crazy turkey call sound when the fan starts to spin. She was very interested in what I was doing, and after a while picked up a screwdriver to help. It was great, and I had thoughts of her becoming an engineer. She even helped me put it all back together, which is definitely the most difficult part. Now it runs better than ever, thanks to my little helper.

Wind Tunnel

Laura turned up the heat this morning while downstairs feeding the girls breakfast. It has been so cold outside that the heat did not turn off until after their nap. When we went to get the girls up, their room was super warm, so we turned up the fan. The girls liked having the fan blow on them, and we took some photos of the wind blowing through the girls' hair. They liked it.

Spa Sitting

Auntie Reanna and Uncle Corey came over along with Kate this afternoon to watch the girls while Chris and I went for a couple's massage. Reanna and Kate put them down for their afternoon nap with me before we left. I didn't expect them to sleep for much more than an hour, since they had a short morning nap. I called when we were on our way back home and was informed that they were still sleeping. They had just gotten them up when we arrived home. They slept for two hours! Luckily everyone was able to stay a little longer and got some play time in with Abby and Zoë. When Kate was getting ready to go Abby wouldn't let go of her. After I was holding her she kept reaching back towards Kate. She gave her another hug good-bye and held on. After a few more hugs and kisses she was ready to let her go. Chris and I will have to go out again so that they can watch them again when they are actually awake.

Falafel

Chris and I had falafel pita's for dinner, we made some extra falafel for Abby and Zoë to try. We also put some plain yogurt on their trays to go with it. Abby tried a little bit of the falafel and then dipped into the yogurt. She kept smacking her hand into the yogurt and then licking it off until there wasn't anymore. She turned her attention to the falafel pieces and ate them all. Zoë was a little more unsure of this new food and only ate it after I allowed her to feed me some bites. For the most part, they have been very willing to try the new foods we are giving them lately.

Teamwork

This evening I put boxes in the doorway to the kitchen while I swept up after dinner. Zoë and Abby were both standing at the box trying to climb over. I kept telling them to wait just a minute until I was done sweeping. They apparently did not like this option and worked together to push the heavy box out of the way. We are in for some trouble.

Egg Head

After dinner Zoë and Abby padded around the living room in their socks. Chris was sitting with Abby in front of the couch. Zoë was trying to sneak in between them and the couch, but her socks were too slippery and she lost her footing and fell straight back and bonked her head. She calmed down after Chris cuddled her a little. She developed a good sized egg on the back of her head. I got her an ice pack and cuddled her a little more.

First Patent Leather Shoes

A while ago we bought two pairs of sneakers for the girls. They didn't have two size three or two size four at the time so I just got one of each. Recently I've noticed that they have outgrown the three's. They aren't walking so much that it's time for a $40 pair of walking shoes yet. While we were at Wal-Mart today we decided to check out the toddler shoes. They had a few cute pairs of shoes in their size, but most didn't have any flex in the soles. The one pair that did was a pair of black patent leather boot style shoes with three pink hearts on the Velcro strap. I tried them on Zoë in the store since she walks a little more than Abby. She was so in awe of the shiny shoes, and the tag that she didn't want to walk. She did manage a couple of steps before crouching back down to check them out. When I put them on her at home her and Abby both just wanted to touch them. Zoë did end up doing some walking in them and they seem like they are just fine for walking in. Both girls are excited about the new shoes and are trying to play with them right now.

Unexpected Nap in their Jumpers

Zoë keeps on waking up at 5:30. Abby will continue to sleep until 6:30 or 7:00 if she is not disturbed. Lately Laura has been getting Zoë out of the room so Abby can sleep longer. This morning though, both girls were up by 6 AM. After their baths and play time in the crib, they came down stairs to the jumpers. They were both happy and jumping away; so much so that Laura and I could not hear each other speak. After a while they started to slow down. They were tiring themselves out. Then they started to head bob and get really drowsy. It was so funny watching them nod off, that I ran upstairs and got Laura before I started taking pictures. I can't imagine it is comfortable sleeping like this, but they did not complain. We will get them up in a little bit for their snack.

New Foods

Zoë and Abby got to try some new foods today. It was all ingredients they had tried before, but not all together. This morning they shared a blueberry muffin Chris made yesterday. For dinner we all had penne with mushroom garlic sauce. We already knew they loved pasta, but have never given them sauce before. We barely put any of the sauce on their portions, but they still managed to paint their faces and hair along with their trays. Zoë managed to get some noodle up her nose after coughing while she was swallowing a bite. After some sneezing and complaining she worked it loose. It is so fun to watch them love new foods!

Little cookers

Abby and Zoë stayed home with Chris this afternoon while I went to the dentist. While I was away he did some baking. Zoë and Abby kept crawling over to our "blockade" blocking them from the kitchen to see what he was doing. He moved this and let them crawl in to see what he was making. They watched intently as he mixed dry ingredients, but when he started the mixer they backed away. He said that Zoë repeatedly crawled to him and pulled herself up by his pant leg. Then she walked herself all the way into the living room! They had such a fun time they wore themselves out, and were down for a nap when I returned home.

Couscous

I made parmesan couscous along with dinner tonight. It wasn't quite time for Abby and Zoë to have their dinner yet, but they were sitting in their high chairs while I cooked. When the couscous was done, I cooled some for them and put it on their trays. They had a great time attempting to pick it up and eat it. They had it ALL over the place, in their hair, over their faces and of course covering their trays. They may have even actually gotten some in their mouths. It was such a funny sight.

Living Room Walker

This evening all Zoë wanted to do was practice walking. She first steadied herself on the couch and then walked like a pro over to Chris a few feet away. Every time I pulled her away from his computer area, she would stand herself up and walk right back over to him. At one point I put her at one end of the living room and she stood up and walked all the way back to Chris, almost half way across the living room! After that we couldn't get her to stop trying to walk long enough to calm her down for bedtime! We think that it may just be a couple of more days and she will be a steady walker!

Sign Language

Just in the past couple of days Abby and Zoë have started signing a couple of more words. Even though a couple of signs look similar, I know what they mean usually. I have been working on "milk," "all-done", and "more" the most with them lately. "More" usually looks like clapping, but they do make the sign when they want more. They both can do the motions for milk, although don't just do it when they want milk, so we are working on it. Zoë will sit around during playing and squeeze both hands. (like milking a cow) We always make sure we let her know she is signing milk when she does this so that she will learn what it means. When Zoë signs "all done" it is mixed with the hand motion for milk, but she has her arms out. Abby signs this by putting both hands out in front of her and shaking them a little, very close. She even will mimic me voicing the words. It is so great to see them communicating with us more, and learning what certain words mean!

Babies No More - a poem

I look at you and your eyes dance,
how blessed I am to have this chance.
To see your whole face smile, to have the affection you show,
to watch you as you explore to learn, as you grow.
You are gaining independence daily,
you never cease to amaze me.
The wonderful bond the two of you share,
I can't imagine seeing just one of you there.
My babies are toddlers all of the sudden it seems,
and in being your Mother I'm living my dreams.

Stern Face and Pout

Abby and Zoë have started to realize more when we tell them things are off limits. A few times now they have not only stopped when we tell them "hands off," but given us a pouty face or a little cry. The other day Abby was going for a cord plugged into the wall and Chris told her "Ah Ah, hands off." She looked at him and gave the biggest pout. She started crawling away and gave him another big, bottom-lip-out, pout complete with teary eyes. This evening Zoë was heading to play with the tag on a cord to our space heater. Chris called her name and when she looked at him he did the best "stern face" he could muster. I was about to laugh at his attempt, when Zoë just started crying. We both had to look away so that she wouldn't see us giggle. She didn't like Daddy getting stern with her. He called her over and gave her some cuddles afterward, and she was all better.

Crazy Legs

Lately Zoë and Abby have been getting what we call their crazies just before bedtime. It reminds me of how people act when they've stayed up really late and are over tired. The funniest thing they do is stand holding onto something and shake one leg. It is more like a repeated kicking motion, almost like someone is doing the hokey pokey. I guess that they are just getting out their last bits of energy before bed.

Father's Joy

Tonight Abby had some difficulty after going to bed. She was congested and needed some comfort so Laura brought her downstairs to the couch. After holding her for a while it was my turn. I can't exactly explain how it feels to hold your child while they are sleeping. I can remember the first time one of my girls fell asleep in my arms. It was and still is absolutely incredible. I don't think there is anything more comforting than that feeling, knowing that you are providing support, safety, security and comfort, everything they need to rest in your arms. This is a father's joy. P.S. It was also a joy when she threw up on my shirt yesterday while I was holding her.

Spirited Evening

This evening after dinner both girls were in good spirits. Chris decided to try out their rocker and sat in it in the living room. Zoë stood and walked a few steps to him and tried to climb up in his lap. Once she was up there she turned herself around to get down to play with something else. She kept going up to him and wanting up into his lap and then wanting to get right back down. Abby saw her doing this and decided to join in the fun. She only did this a couple of times, her attention moved to the telephone when Nonna called. Chris put the phone on speaker so that she could ask Abby if she was feeling better. Abby had a big snarly grin on her face and was just "talking" and laughing away. She has babbled and giggled a little bit to the phone before, but she was so animated this evening. Maybe she was telling Nonna that she had a full belly and had just taken her medicine and was feeling a little better. It was wonderful to see both of the girls laughing and having a good time before bed.

Sickness Update

Abby is still feeling lousy. She has been coughing more today, and has even spit up just a little a couple of times today. Last night was a sleepless one. We buckled Abby into her rocker and put her beside our bed last night. She was restless but slept until just before 1 in the morning. After she woke up I tried for about an hour to get her to sleep in our bed. When I realized this just wasn't going to work I brought her downstairs so that both her and Chris could get some sleep. Zoë slept great through the night again. She has been pretty patient today with me paying a bit more attention to Abby than her. Abby slept for about half an hour this morning, which Zoë was happy about since she got some one on one play time with me. Hopefully today will be the worst of things and she will start to be on the mend tomorrow.

Pediatrician Visit

I called the Pediatrician's office this morning when I decided that Abby's wet cough wasn't croup. I took her in this afternoon while Chris stayed home with Zoë. After I told the Dr. what she sounded like at home, and she listened to her chest, looked in her ears and at the back of her throat she concluded that she just has a bad cold. There's also a good chance that she will get worse before she gets better. When we got home Chris said that Zoë slept all the way until 1:45, a great nap. After she got up she played well, just waiting for us to get back. Abby hadn't had a fever today, and the Dr. said that if she spiked one to give a call back. When I checked her before bed it was 100.6 degrees underarm. We are hoping that the Tylenol will bring it down for the night.

Happy Valentine's Day

Today was Zoë and Abby's second Valentine's Day. They each wrote Daddy a special note and snuck them in his pants pockets before he woke up. We didn't go anywhere today, since Abby isn't feeling well, and it was chilly outside. Abby was pretty sleepy from being up most of the night. Zoë slept through all of the commotion through the night until 6:30 this morning. They played pretty well together throughout the day but Abby started feeling yuckier and her cough got worse. At 6 p.m. we had the Dr. on call paged. We told him all of her symptoms and he said there is a good chance she has croup... great. Unless things get worse we won't need to take her into the Pediatrician's. Hopefully tonight will be a better night.

14 Months

Abby and Zoë are 14 months old, wow! Zoë is so courageous in her walking attempts. Many times she will just let go of whatever she is cruising along and take as many steps as she can. When she either gets a little nervous or starts to lose her balance she just crouches down. Abby is still a little more cautious, but takes some great steady steps and then squats. Sometimes after she has squatted she will stand back up and even take another step. They are also copying our phrases more and more. They don't say things on their own when they babble to each other, but after we say something they will copy pretty closely. They love to test us lately, especially when we are paying more attention to one. They will go pick up something they know they aren't supposed to have and look right at us. These little beans surprise us every day. They will have a check-up next month, when we will find out how much they've grown.

Head Shakers

Recently Zoë and Abby have started nodding and shaking their heads. It isn't necessarily just when we ask them something though. It seems as though they are not only imitating the intonation in voice when we speak to them, but also our head movements. Zoë seems to prefer big shakes from side to side, and the occasional nod and tilt. Abby tilts, nods, and does little twitches. It's so funny to watch these little copy cats imitate the way we speak to them.

Had Abby and Zoë been born on their due date, they would be a year old today. It is wierd to think that two months have passed since their first birthday, but if they had not been so early we would be celebrating now. Nonno, Uncle Matt, and Aunt Elizabeth Visit

Nonno, Uncle Matt, and Auntie Elizabeth came up this afternoon for a visit. Zoë went to Elizabeth fairly quickly, but Abby clung to me for a little while. They showed off their new tricks, including taking some steps, and babbled on and on. Abby enjoyed some giggle time with Uncle Matt in the play yard. She also "helped" Nonno take some photos. Zoë wanted to go to Elizabeth again and again. After their lunch they went down for a nap, which we thought for sure would be close to two hours. After getting an hour's worth of rest, they wanted nothing more than to come back downstairs and get some more playtime in with the family.

Napping Protests

Abby and Zoë seem to be telling us that their nap schedule needs to be altered, just when we thought we had a good routine going. We had them sleeping for about an hour at 8:30 in the morning. They then sleep for about two hours at 1 p.m. Then they sleep yet again for close to an hour starting at 5 p.m. They haven't slept for their morning nap in the past few days. This morning they did sleep for about half an hour, after Zoë was up at five in the morning. She got used to being patted to sleep while she was sick, now that she is getting better we are trying to get her back into her routine. She is definitely not happy about this. Her cries have surprisingly not woken Abby up that much, but for their afternoon nap we decided to put the playpen in our bedroom so that we could work with Zoë without disturbing Abby. They both fell asleep fairly quickly, but Zoë woke up an hour early with a stuffy nose. Her cries woke Abby up quicker than when she is in the same room. They ended up being rescued by Daddy and got to play with him in the play yard for almost an hour while I finished up the cleaning I thought I would be doing while they slept. We have been blessed that they slept for so many naps during the day for this long, especially after sleeping for about 10 hours at night. We clearly need to just let them give up their morning nap.

Hugs and Loves

Zoë and Abby have been cuddling each other all day today. First, while Abby was lying on her back Zoë laid over her. They both laughed and laughed. Later while Zoë was lying on the floor, Abby crawled over and lay right on top of her. They both thought this was hilarious. This evening they were at it again. Zoë was rolling around on the floor in the play yard and Abby crawled on over. They were giggling and giggling. When Chris and I looked over, we noticed that Abby was completely covering Zoë's head. I got up to remove her, but Zoë was laughing away. Once Abby saw Chris and I going towards the duo, she backed off. It is just so funny to watch them cuddle and kiss each other. And their wonderful laughs are so contagious.

Playing Chase

The game of chase started out last night when Abby had the sesame street pop-up game. She was sliding it around the living room floor and Zoë started crawling after her. She got it away and darted out in front pushing the toy toward the hall. Abby chased after her giggling. This afternoon the game continued. Abby had a toy from the highchair, contentedly playing with it in the living room. Zoë came along and swiped it from her. Abby crawled after her trying to get it back. When this didn't work she let out a loud scream. Zoë looked at her and screamed right back. Abby got right up to her face and screamed again. They seemed to think this was funny. This evening they were at it again with their walking, talking pooh bear. It is funny to watch. They truly only want what the other has these past couple of days.

Visits with Grampy

Grampy called this afternoon saying that he was in the area. He arrived an hour before Zoë and Abby were supposed to get up from their long afternoon nap. They must have sensed his arrival because they both awoke just before he walked in the door. Chris and I tried to pat them back to sleep, to no avail. We brought them downstairs and they just took a few minutes to warm up to Grampy. Zoë played and played with him, wanting him to summersault her over and over again. Abby came and went. She played with her toys and then went and stood with him for a bit, then went about her business again. They both had a great time playing, until it was time to catch up on some of their missed sleep.

Beets Sensation

Zoë and Abby tried beets for the first time with their lunch this afternoon. First I cut up a slice for them to share. They each made some faces but started eating it. I then gave them each a slice of their own. I thought that Abby might try shoving the whole thing in her mouth at once, as she does with most of her other food, but she took nice bites. Even though Zoë is still not feeling well, she ate almost all of her piece. I am glad we found something else that they readily accepted.

Zoë's Head Cold

We are pretty certain that Zoë has caught the head cold Chris and I have just gotten over. We have some stuffy nose decongestant, but went to Wal-mart today to buy different medicine. They did not carry anything for her symptoms that was safe for her age/weight. She has been letting me wipe her nose if I disguise it as a game of "beep beep," where I beep her nose. Her poor little head is just all congested. Her nose is running, eyes watering, and it seems that her ears are bothering her from all of the pressure. We put the girls down to bed an hour early tonight; at 7 p.m. since neither one slept that well for their naps today. They went down easily but then Zoë woke up just before 9 p.m. Chris tried to help me suction out her nose, but that just made things worse. I took her into our room and rocked her while Chris got the shower steaming in the bathroom. After rocking her in the bathroom with the lights dimmed for a little bit she calmed down and was breathing a little easier. I put her back to bed and she slept for a little longer. Since then Chris and I have been taking turns going in to get her back to sleep. I have a feeling I may end up sleeping in the playpen tonight.

Sushi Rolls

We gave Auntie Reanna an early birthday present this evening. It was a book and kit all about how to make sushi rolls and things of that sort. Chris wasn't convinced that she liked it, and so he took her to the store to get seaweed wraps, and fillings. Abby and Zoë had a good time eating the rice while everything was being prepared. Then they got to take turns watching Chris prepare the rolls. After we saw how it was done, Reanna and I tried our hands at it. It was fun and delicious. We can't wait for Abby and Zoë to try their first vegetable/sushi rolls.

Stonyfield Contest Update

I went to the Stonyfield website to see who they chose for the semi- finalists today. Sadly, Abby and Zoë were not on the list. I blame myself for not taking better photos to send in. It all works out now though, since we have banned the baby yogurt from Zoë and Abby's diet. Now I can write the company and ask about all of that sugar!

Picture People Love Bugs

We had yet another coupon for the picture people. I didn't think that Chris would go for the free session and picture, considering his attitude after our Wal-mart session in October. He said to go for it, and came along with us for the valentine photo. Abby didn't sleep for the morning nap, and wasn't giving up any smiles at first. Zoë, on the other hand, was all giggles. Abby warmed up to the photographer and we got some good poses. We went back in about an hour later to look over the photos and pick which we wanted. Chris saw an offer for eight wallet pictures to go along with eight valentine's cards for just under $10 (which I guess is a bargain at Picture People) and he suggested we do that, which definitely surprised me. We chose the picture we wanted for the free one and then chose the pose for the wallets. It is always hard to see all of the other photos go to waste, but we just can't support the outrageous prices there. Chris has let me know that we aren't going to any more sittings, even with coupons... and "this time he means it." *smile* It was fun to see our little valentine's share their smiles.

February Physical Therapy

Today's session marks almost a year that the Zoë and Abby have been getting PT with Kendra. Zoë showed off her walking skills, and other motor abilities. Abby was reluctant to show that she can take steps, but babbled and babbled and showed off her imitating skills. During the very end Abby finally took about six steps to Kendra on her own. She even let out a couple of roars. Kendra got a kick out of how the girls giggle and laugh. They have their re-evaluation in another couple of weeks. In the meantime we will work on speech and cognition with them, along with more confidence in walking without support.

Abby the Roar Monster

Abby and Zoë were crawling around the living room and making their way into the hallway this evening. Zoë was content playing with her slippers, while Abby crawled up and down the hallway. Chris kept running around the other direction, when she realized he was coming at her and looked up; he gave her a big roar. She then proceeded to roar back at him. She turned, saw Zoë and crawled after her, roaring. It was so funny. She kept crawling around roaring and roaring... the cutest little roar you have ever heard!

I wished I could of been there.

Zoë on the Run

I put Zoë on the floor on her feet this afternoon by her play yard. Chris was a few feet away at his computer. I told her to walk to Chris, not really thinking she would since he was so far away. She took off before she completely had her balance, but just kept on walking. She came to a couple of computer cords on the floor and started going faster, almost at a run! She kept going all the way to Chris! We couldn't believe how far she walked, and how steady she stayed with her fast pace!
