Mommy's Milk - A Poem

You got Mommy's milk through a tube,
when your life first began.
That's not how I'd envisioned starting things,
but we made ourselves a new plan.
And so it began,
our Mommy's milk journey.
We began to figure things out,
as we forged ahead ever so slowly.
When you finally came home,
you still couldn't nurse from me.
You were just too small,
you couldn't spare the energy.
You grew and grew,
and then you learned how.
It still wasn't easy,
not even now.
I started to nurse,
with both of you right there.
But you wouldn't stay,
you had no patience to share.
The road started off rough and slow,
but then flew by rapidly.
As day after day and month after month,
you snuggled up to nurse happily.
Then just as slowly as you began,
you started to be done.
As you began to drop feedings,
one by one.
That brings us to the present,
this journey is over for us today.
At times I thought I'd be ready,
but now, after 18 months, this is so sad for me to say.
I was blessed to have those times,
to share in those moments with you.
Thank you my healthy little ladies,
thank you my precious two.

Well done, Laura!
Abby and Zoe what a nice remembrance poem mommy wrote for you.

Abby's Last Nursing

Today was Abby's last turn nursing.  This was even a more final day, as that means that both girls are all done nursing.  Abby nursed well, even squirming to get just comfortable while she had her last nurse.

Daddy Changes a Diaper

Since the girls were a few months old, diapers have been my duty.  With the girls having such skinny legs and little waists, I've developed my own method of tightening and fastening to ensure no leaks.  This morning we decided to shower the girls while we showered.  Abby had fallen asleep while waiting, so I brought Zoë in so Chris could wash her up.  When she was all done I got her dried and diapered and woke Abby up for her turn.  She was less than thrilled to be thrust into the shower just after waking up, so I got in with her so Chris could go dress Zoë.  Abby was so worked up after she had gotten washed, that Chris said he would take her so I could rinse.  I was hurrying to go get a diaper on her before she peed. When I walked into their room, much to my surprise, Chris was just finishing up putting a diaper on Abby!  It was perfectly tight around the legs and waist, no gaps, and no adjustments needed by mommy whatsoever!  We were all very proud and clapped for Daddy.

Zoë's Last Nursing

This morning was the last time Zoë will nurse.  Both girls have begun to lose interest and would rather have a sippy of milk.  I couldn't help but get teary eyed, knowing how final this was.

Time with Grampy

Grampy came by this afternoon for a visit.  Zoë and Abby had some time to get used to him a little and then had some lunch.  Abby had a big mouthful of food, and while I was preparing more Grampy noticed that she had fallen asleep mid-chew.  It was a little early for nap, but since both girls were up quite early this morning we knew it was time for sleep.  As I was cleaning her, she woke up a little and started chewing again.  After their nap they warmed up to Grampy even more and begged and begged for him to come read to them in their play area.  As soon as he sat down Abby climbed into his lap, Zoë was right behind her.  They kept giving him book after book to read, and read, and read.  We had a nice visit, and when he left they both whined for him to come back and play with them.

Potty Update

Zoë pooped on the toilet this morning!  This is the second time.  She still hasn't gone pee-pee on it, but I caught her getting ready to go poop and sat her down.  At first she wanted to get up, but then sat until she was all finished.
Abby peed twice on the toilet again today,  once when everyone was watching!

Nonno's Visit

Nonno and Martha are staying with Uncle Matt for the holiday weekend.  They all came up this morning to see the ladies.  It took the girls a few minutes to warm up to them, but as soon as Uncle Matt got into the play area and gave Zoë belly tickles they were all giggles.  They were a riot, giving these belly laughs and running all over.  We went for a walk around town before lunch and then after their nap we went to Newcastle Commons.  They ran and ran in the grass, but had a little hindrance from their new skirts that Auntie Elizabeth sent.  The skirts kept slipping down no matter how tightly we tied them.  Finally I tucked part of the bottom into their t-shirts and off they went romping in the grass.  It looked like they had little romba's on.  Nonno and Martha just couldn't get over how adorable their little skirts were on them.  After some play time we drove up into Maine for dinner.  As usual the girls were very well behaved.  They giggled and shared their food wonderfully.  We all had a great visit, and look forward to seeing them again soon.

We didn't add the green chiles, and we substituted cannellini beans for the chick peas.  Instead of chili powder we used taco seasoning.  All in all it was a good meal, although it would be quicker to open a can of vegetarian chili, add a can of baked beans (BBQ or other style), mix over heat, and then add your cornbread muffins, instead of making the chili from scratch.  Abby and Zoë really seemed to enjoy this.  They gobbled it up without hesitation and requested more and more.

Break from the rain

This morning Chris had to take the car to be serviced.  He left early while the girls were just finishing their breakfast.  On his way out the door, Zoë kept saying Ca-Ca (car) and signing Daddy, while Abby was signing and saying Daddy.  After a while I dressed the girls and took them out for a walk.  This was the first let up in a week long rain storm.  We thought the rain would never end.  We got back to the house right before morning snack, and once inside Zoë started signing and looking for Daddy.  He had not returned yet, but as soon as he did, they got big hugs.

I doubled the recipe for the four of us.  I also didn't use sherry and added extra vegetables.  With the added vegetables we could have used more sauce, but besides that it was a good dish.  Abby and Zoë ate this up.  Chris, who doesn't typically like tofu, even liked it.

The Tropics

It has been raining for so long, you would think we moved to the tropics.  Very cool tropics that is.  Between the long winter, and all of this rain there was just a couple of weeks it seems that Abby and Zoë actually got to play outside.  There was one really nice spurt of warm weather, I'm not sure where that's gone to.  We've been packing the girls up to take them on car rides in the afternoon just to get them out of the house.  Tomorrow may actually be rain free, though still not making it out of the 40's.  I will have to be sure to bundle the girls and get them out for a stroll at least before we have another week of rain.

I decided to change some things in this sandwich.  I used mediteranian pane loaf, sliced at the grocery store bakery, bread loaf style.  I didn't add parmesan cheese, or capers.  I used balsamic vinegar in place of the white wine vinegar.  I also used mozzarella instead of the provolone.  After I assembled the sandwiches, I grilled them panini style on our countertop grill.  This turned out to be really tasty.  Abby and Zoë liked the basil mixture, and even tried the artichoke hearts.

Abby's first Day in Undies

Abby went pee on her toilet two times today, and had dry undies several of the times she tried to go pee.  We did have two wet undies today, and then switched to diapers before her afternoon nap.  She slept in this morning, so she joined Zoë for breakfast right away instead of sitting to go pee.  After that, I couldn't seem to sit her down at the right times.  She went this morning, and she went again after bath.  We will try again tomorrow, and hopefully we will start off on the right foot... or right toilet in this case.

The grape nuts cereal really added a nice texture to the sauce.  It's important to make sure that it is simmered long enough for the cereal to absorb some of the liquid and become soft, unless you like crunchy pasta sauce that is.

These "cakes", which are supposed to be like burgers, were pretty good.  They were a little lacking in taste, but that is mostly because I forgot to get cilantro and therefore had to leave it out.  I also didn't use a chipotle pepper, and I used adobo seasoning instead of sauce.  Next time around I would probably still leave out the pepper, but add in chopped onions.  We melted some monterey-jack cheese on top and put salsa along with the guacamole.  This bumped up the flavor, in place of my missing cilantro.  Abby took to the cakes right away and ate about half a patty.  Zoë took to them slowly, but picked up her pace after she saw Abby getting seconds.

Abby's New Undies

We bought Abby thick training underwear at Wal-Mart today.  We also got plastic diaper pant covers to go over them so that she doesn't go through eight outfits a day.  I will start her in them tomorrow, since we will be home all day.  I plan to take her to sit on her toilet every 20 minutes while she is awake, and change her into a diaper before naps.  I'm hoping that feeling her wet pee when she has an "accident" along with sitting so frequently will help her to further understand the concept of going pee on the toilet.

Mealtime Antics

Zoë and Abby have developed some interesting habits at mealtime.  Their high chair trays have an extra smaller tray that clips on and off for easy cleaning.  There is a little cut out on either side of the tray to be able to lift it off.  Zoë, even if she is still hungry for whatever is on her tray, will push the food into these cut outs.  Occasionaly she'll then ask for more to eat.  When I lift off the tray after she's done, I find an assortment of food underneath.  Abby will tell me that she is all done, will refuse offers to eat anything else, then when I go to clean her up she grabs up a handful of food and shoves it all in her mouth.  It's like she wants to take some to go.

Another Potty Update - Abby

Abby peed on the toilet twice again today.  Her first time was this morning.  The second time was after bath for Auntie Reanna.  While in the tub, Abby was unusually fussy and antsy to get out.  Reanna dried her off and took her in the bedroom to sit on her toilet.  I heard cheers and knew that she had gone.

This soup turned out to be quite tasty, even before I blended it and added the milk.  Abby and Zoë liked to eat the pasta out of the dish, but only let me feed them a few spoonfuls of the soup.  I didn't add the Jamaican Jerk Seasoning, as I feared it would be too spicy for the girls.  I used a can of evaporated milk, not the fat free variety.  I think this also would have been good with some celery added, but thought of it too late into the process.

Twice in a Night

Abby peed on the toilet again!  She's never gone twice in one day before today.  She sat on her toilet before bed, and after a little pushing she peed.  The fact that she is doing this more and more often leads us to believe that she is beginning to associate sitting on her toilet with peeing.

News Article - Kids and T.V.

While reading the paper today we came across an article about television commercials targeting children.  The author cut the cable in his home close to a year ago, and has an ongoing series regarding this topic.  His main points were about the commercials targeting our children.  Our children do not realize that these are biased companies that don't always show truth in marketing, especially while pushing things like junk food, alchohol, cigarettes, and more.  A point that he just brushed over was about programs desensitizing kids to things like violence and sexual promiscuity.  Young children can't distinguish between real and pretend on the television.  Watching a shoot-out on one of the many cop shows is the same in their minds as watching it on the news, or in their front yard.  It was a good article, and hopefully an eye opener to many parents and caregivers about the amount of t.v. and the programs they let their children watch.

Tote go 'Round

We have a black cotton sachel type bag with nylon straps that we use to tote along Abby and Zoë's toys or a meal when we go visiting.  It was lying in the play area, when Zoë spotted it.  She picked it up and began walking 'round and 'round while carrying it.  Abby saw this and wanted in on the fun.  She grabbed another part of the strap and walked 'round and 'round with her sister. It was funny to watch them walking around both holding on to it, each tugging a bit as they went.

Graduation Party

We drove the girls this afternoon to attend a party in honor of Kate's graduation from college..  When we first arrived Kate took us over to show Abby and Zoë the horses.  Their owner walked one out of the corral, she was big!  Abby was nervous to let Kate get too close to the horse with her, but Zoë let us move closer.  When she finally worked up the courage to pet the horse's nose like Daddy was, it whinnied and scared Zoë.  We walked back over to where the guests were arriving.  Everyone got a kick out of the girls.  They walked around the deck, pointing at things, calling any animal in sight a "goggy."  They were happy and giddy, despite missing pretty much their whole afternoon nap.

Chris and I took the girls.  The organizer, Pam was there with her kids, husband, mom, and a few family friends.  Abby and Zoë had a fun time running around in the grass, and especially walking on the brick pathways.  Abby even ventured off by herself after a little bit and wandered farther from us than she has before.  It was nice to chat with everyone, between chasing after Zoë and Abby that is.  After a while the girls got sleepy, so Chris walked them back home and put them down for a little rest.  When I got back he had them in their high chairs eating dinner.  They went right down at bed time after a nice play day outdoors.

Riverdance

It is so funny.  The girls belly up to the play yard fence and then stomp their feet rapidly.  I always think they are trying to riverdance and encourage them.  Sometimes Laura has observed them "riverdancing" around their house.  They are turning into such active people.

Teeth 10 and 11 for Abby

I've been keeping an eye on Abby's bottom jaw on the right side.  Today I saw and felt two new teeth just erupting.  Her bottom right lateral insicor and her bottom right first molar have just made their appearance.

Another Pee for Abby

This makes four times going pee on the toilet for Abby.  Yet again, after bath time last night, Abby went pee on her toilet.  She hasn't been going during the day, maybe too many distractions, but she sure is getting the hang of going after bath!

Meet-Up

I walked Zoë and Abby to one of the nearby playgrounds for our mom's meet up group.  Yet again, the organizer was the only other one there.  She had her baby with her.  We decided to just walk around town.  We stopped in town so that the girls could have their lunch, then I headed back home with Zoë and Abby.

Nose Crickets

Abby and Zoë have taken to giving  what Chris likes to call "crickets." They will just walk up to us and stick their fingers up our nose.  They will walk up to each other and do the same thing.  They've also started sticking their fingers up their own noses... and it begins!

Kick Ball

A few weeks ago we bought two foam balls for Abby and Zoë.  Just in the past couple of days the girls have learned to kick them.  Abby runs into it, and as it rolls she claps for herself.  Just today Zoë figured out how to lift a foot and kick the ball, all without falling over.  Chris and I played a little kick ball with our girls this afternoon.  Both girls were running around trying to get the ball, it was a lot of fun.

Another Pee Makes Three

Before getting Abby into her nighttime diaper and pj's, I let her sit on her toilet.  I asked her if she had to go pee and seconds later she started going!  Auntie Reanna and Uncle Corey were over, and we all praised her.  While we did so she stopped going, then started up again.  Each time I told her she was going pee pee.  I think she may be really starting to associate the toilet with going pee.

Abby's Second Pee in the Toilet

Abby was the first out of the bath this evening.  I dried her off and sat her on her little toilet.  At first she was just sitting there with one of her bath toys.  I felt her pushing and then heard her peeing.  I excitedly told her she was peeing, and she got excited too.  This was the first time that I think she actually tried to go pee on the toilet.  Are we getting closer?

The months just keep going by faster and faster.  Abby and Zoë are just developing leaps and bounds every day.  They have so many words that they try to say.  The newest they've been copying is "kiss."  We will have a check-up next month to see how they are measuring up.

Mimickers

The girls have been mimicking so many things we do lately.  They've started giving kisses like we do, they'll clap when we clap, and try to say just about everything we do.  The latest mimick came from Zoë.  Chris had some music on and was sitting across from Zoë.  She was watching him closely, so he started bobbing his head with the music.  She was sitting in her exersaucer and started bobbing her head too.  Chris stopped and looked back at the computer, Zoë stopped momentarily as well.  We looked over again and she was bobbing her head along with the music again.  It was just too cute!

Good-bye Friends

We've been saying a lot of good-bye's lately.  Early this morning Catherine, Dominick, Margo, and Francis flew back home to Italy.  Zoë and I went across the street yesterday evening to say good-bye.  As we got to the house Zoë said something resembling "Margo." And started waving "Hello".  We had a wonderful time getting to know their family, and it was great to have a playmate for the girls right across the street.  We will miss them, and look forward to their next visit.

Grilled Salmon with Olive Tomato Vinaigrette

1 can (2 1/4 ounces) sliced black olives, drained
1 can (3 ounces) green olives stuffed with pimentos, drained and sliced
1/4 cup canned tomato paste
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/4 cup water
3 pounds salmon fillet, with skin
2 teaspoons Italian (oregano and basil) seasoning
Nonstick spray olive oil

Mix the olives, tomato paste, olive oil, wine vinegar, lemon juice and water. Set aside; store in the refrigerator if kept longer than 4 hours.

Heat a grill to high. Season the flesh-side of the salmon with the seasoning and spray liberally with oil. Spray the rack of the grill with oil and grill the fish flesh-side down until browned, about 5 minutes. Flip with a wide long-handles spatula and grill until the fish flakes to gentle pressure. Depending on the thickness of the fillet this will take any where from 5 to 10 minutes more.

Slip the spatula between the skin and the flesh. Lift the fish onto a cutting board or serving platter; the skin will stick to the grill (it can be scraped off later). Spoon the olive sauce over the salmon and serve.

We cut the recipe in half.  We bought 3 Norwegian salmon steaks, without the skin, just enough for the four of us, about 1.25 pounds. We used our countertop grill, and seasoned both sides of the fish with olive oil, italian seasonings, salt and pepper.  This vinaigrette sauce tasted good and complemented the salmon well.  Althoug next time we do this recipe we will omitt the green olives, and try blending the black olives in order to make it more of a paste rather than a dressing.  The girls ate it right up.  They enjoyed the olives the most.

Diaper Escape

This morning after breakfast I took Zoë over and let her sit on her toilet and then put on a fresh diaper.  I put her in the play area in just her diaper, like I usually do in the mornings.  I then cleaned Abby off and took her over to sit on the toilet.  As I was sititng there with Abby I heard the unmistakable sound of a diaper being undone.  I looked over to see that Zoë had one side of her diaper undone.  It wasn't long before she had stepped out of the other side and was waving around.  I got her and brought her to the changing area, where Abby was contentedly still sitting on the little toilet.  I put Zoë's diaper on yet again, and then put some sweat pants on over it.  I got her back into the play area just in time for Abby to be ready for her diaper.  I put some sweats on her as well and sent her to play with her sister while I did the breakfast dishes.  After a little while I heard some screams so I came to see what was the matter.  Zoë had her pants almost off, just hanging on by one ankle.  Abby was standing over her "helping" by tugging at the pant leg.  I also noticed that her diaper was low, hanging off of her bottom.  I broke things up, fixed Zoë's diaper one more time, and then put her back into her pajamas.

Fort Visits

Today we went to Fort Foster in Maine.  Yesterday we went to Fort McClary, also in Maine.  Abby and Zoë loved being able to walk along all by themselves.  It was slow going in the grass, as Zoë liked the long pieces that hadn't been cut and Abby tried to pick every dandelion there was.  At Fort McClary there were some granite slabs laying in the grass that both girls climbed all over.  At Fort Foster the favorite thing of the day seemed to be the gravel pathways.  Abby especially liked to swish her hands in it and pick handfulls of it up and then dust it off.  They tried out the Merry-go-round, and the teeter totters too.  It was nice to get out in the sunshine.

Baby Kisses

I noticed for the first time this evening that Abby would deliver a kiss if you scrunched up your face and made puckering noises.  I was in the play yard and she was doing her daily laps around her house and everytime she came around, I would scrunch up my lips and make a kissing noise.  She would walk over and plant a kiss.  It was funny watching her give out kisses.  Zoë got in a few as well.

Abby's First Potty Usage

After bath tonight, we let each of the girls have a turn sitting on the potty.  When we sat Abby down, she was all excited and giggly.  She got up, and we figured she was all done so I started getting a diaper on her.  Chris looked in the potty and noticed that she had peed!  I wasn't sure at first if it was really pee.  I smelled it and watched as Chris poured it down the drain... it was pee!

Grandma Cindy Says Good-bye

Grandma Cindy had to go back home with Tikva today.  Her and Auntie Reanna came over this morning to hang out for a little bit before they needed to head to the airport.  Abby and Zoë got in some nice cuddles for a little while.  It was time to say good-bye before we knew it.  Both girls walked over to Tikva in the kitchen to say good-bye to the "goggy".  They kept going from my arms reaching back to Grandma and to Auntie.  The girls finally let them out of the house with many "bye-bye's".

This morning Grandma Cindy, Auntie Reanna, and I attended a church service nearby.  When we got back Uncle Matt was here.  Everyone played with the girls for a bit, and then it was time for lunch.  We all had some yummy vegetable lasagna that Daddy made.  Abby and Zoë went down for a much needed nap.  Aunti Reanna, Grandma Cindy, Nonna, and I left the sleeping beauties with Daddy and Uncle Matt while we went for some Mother's Day Ice Cream at Ben & Jerry's.  Reanna and Grandma had to go meet Uncle Corey close to dinner time.  Nonna, Daddy, and I decided to take Abby and Zoë to try a restaurant in town.  We had a nice dinner out, despite a few little screams.  It was a wonderful Mother's Day spent with my own Mother, Mother-in-law, and my lovely little daughters, and of course their thoughtful Daddy.  (Not to mention their Uncle and their Aunt)

Abby Almost Used the Potty

But used the floor instead.  We noticed this morning that Abby seemed to be trying to go poop.  I took her over to the potty and sat her down.  She told me she was all done right away, but she did sit back down.  She was playing with a block and kept wanting to get up off the potty.  I let her get up and play with the block right by the potty.  I could tell that she was trying to go, so I was watching for it so that I could sit her on the potty right away.  At first sight I lifted her to sit on the potty and out came the poopies... right onto the floor!  I sat her and she finished the tiny bit she had left.  I told her she had pooped and we had a good try.  I cleaned her, while Nonna cleaned the floor.

Amoskeag Fishways Children's Festival

Since we were in Manchester, we decided to take advantage of The children's festival that was happening at the Amoskeag fishways.  It is a rainy day today, so we hustled the girls down the path to the building.  We headed downstairs and actually saw the fish this time!  We then headed back upstairs to let Abby and Zoë mill around.  After a few minutes we headed outside to the events under the tents.  There wasn't anything age appropriate, so we decided to pack them up and head home for lunch.

We picked Nonna up from the airport just after 10a.m. this morning.  She and Daddy hadn't eaten breakfast, so we stopped at a nearby McDonald's.  Abby and Zoë have never been in one before.  We got them into high chairs, and put some Ronald McDonald bibs on them.  They had their snack, and when they saw our food arrive, immediately began singing "please".  We let them try a couple of bites of daddy's english muffin, and a little of my pancakes.

Zoë's First Potty Usage

It was a # 2!  Zoë seemed to be trying to go poop this morning after breakfast, so I took her to get changed first.  I thought if I sat her on the potty before she went in her diaper, we could make some progress.  When I checked she had already gone a little in her diaper so I just wiped her and sat her on the potty.  After just a couple of seconds she started pooping!  I clapped for her and excitedly told her that she was pooping.  She clapped for herself too.  She started to get fidgety so I asked her if she was all done.  Then she started going more!  I praised her and praised her and told her what she was doing.  When she was all done I let her see into the potty and told her again that she had pooped in the potty.

Zoë learned how to move the gate to escape this evening.  She is such a quick learner.  We turned around and did a double take.  We did not see her in the play yard, and then there she was around the side by the lamp.  We looked at each other in awe, surprised to see her on the lamb.  We scooped her up, put her back into the play yard, and secured the gate.  So far it is holding.

Grandma Cindy was meeting a few colleages for lunch today at the Portsmouth Gas Light Co / Downtown Pizza.  I went with her and brought Zoë and Abby.  I brought their milk and their lunch, but they showed me that they would much rather have the pizza buffet like Grandma and I.  I gave them a little of my garlic bread, a bite of pizza, and some of the mac n' cheese.  They behaved well, as usual.  When they started leaning over in their high chairs to snuggle me, I knew it was time to get them home for naps.

Training Potty Purchased

We know that the girls aren't really ready for "potty training", but in light of  Abby's new found fondness to pee without her diaper on, we decided to get them familiar with what a potty is used for.  We bought a 3-in-1 potty at Toys 'R Us this afternoon, and let the girls test it out before bed time.  No results tonight, but we'll keep trying.

Playground Time

Abby and Zoe haven't been to a playground for a while with all of the rain.  Even before the rain I opted to take them to the park to play, as following them both up structures is quite stressful.  Today we went for a walk with Grandma Cindy and Daddy.  We went to the four tree island playground.  Chris helped Zoe climb up to the slides.  She got really good at it, and only needed Chris to spot her.  Another little boy came along, and Abby decided that she'd watch him and would just like to do what he was doing.  When he was riding the "motorcycle"  she was trying to climb up there with him.  He said that she could ride with him and scooted forward.  He then let Zoe have a turn.  Both girls climbed through the tunnel to get to the slides.  They had fun running around, despite their trips and falls.

Portsmouth Childrens Day

Abby and Zoë were so excited that we brought them into town on Children's Day.  Portsmouth planned a very large event for the children.  Most of Market Square was blocked off from traffic.  They had a band set up on one end, and a few sponsor and vendors handing out stuff.  The girls got the hand outs and some ballons.  We walked them around to the various characters for photos.  It is crazy how many totally oblivious people there are out there who will walk right in front of you taking a photo.  I got some good shots of the back of their heads.  The characters really freaked Abby and Zoë out.  Click here for the PDF map of the area.
