Friday Fun

We are all quite happy it's Friday.  It's been a busy week and both of the girls have been asking to go home with Daddy, especially after they wake up from nap.  The weather has been so nice this whole week, we've been going out on the playground at least once a day.  All of the kids get so excited and the girls rush to me to ask to wear their sunglasses, although they don't usually stay on for the entire time outside.  Today I decided to bring extra clothes and jog home while Chris drove Abby and Zoë home.  He drove slowly and looped around a couple of times so that the girls could see me.  He said that Zoë was laughing and laughing, but Abby was really upset so I ended up getting in the car and riding the rest of the way home.

Abby, maybe if your your mommy runs a little way more often while you are in the car, you will feel better about her jogging.

Goggle Goggle

Abby and Zoë have a new favorite game.  They sit really close and lean into one another and say "goggle, goggle, goggle" into some body part, usually the arm.  It's so funny to watch because they think this is so funny and they'll sit up and say "Goggle, Goggle me sissy".

Solar Eclipse Missed

I was bummed to have missed the solar eclipse yesterday. Here is the path of the solar eclipse we just missed.  I would have loved to share that experience with Abby and Zoë.  It just was not viewable where we live.  I had the good fortune to view a total solar eclipse while working in Austria during August of 1999.  It was an incredible experience.  Total solar eclipses are fairly rare, there have only been 3 solar eclipses since the girls were born, 1 total, 1 annular and 1 hybrid.  Most don't last more than 2 minutes, although some can last 7 - 11 minutes in the best viewing areas.  The August 11 1999 total eclipse lasted 2 minutes and 23 seconds.  Austria happened to be very near the best viewing location and directly in the path, so I was super lucky. You can see the path of that eclipse here, it went right through Salzburg where I was working.  We all took time out to get onto the Bank's roof to celebrate with champagne and sparklers.  The next possible viewing of a total solar eclipse in the United States will be on August 21st 2017.  The next possible viewing for New England will be on April 8th 2024.
Good graphical representation of all total solar eclipses in the United States from 2001-2050.

One Week Without Paci's

I am quite pleased with how smoothly this week without pacifiers has gone.  I hadn't even planned on weaning them from these at school naps, but that just went right along with everything else.  It does seem that, even though they are doing very well getting calmed down for sleep without their pacifiers,  this change has affected their behavior a bit.  They cling a little more to me when it's time to go to the nap room at school and they also want their "lovies" a little more often, especially when they are hurt or upset.  Before both girls would ask for their paci's first, and then their bunny or bear.  If they woke during the night they were more concerned with finding a pacifier than their stuffed animals but now they definitely have to know where these comforters are.  Yesterday Zoë thought that I forgot teddy bear at school and was really upset until she realized he was in our bag.  So, they still have an attachement, but not one that is going to damage their tooth formation so it's okay with me.

Paci's All Gone - Night 6

Tonight was the first night that neither of the girls even mentioned their paci's at bed time.  We've noticed one downfall of not having plugs in their mouth though... much more chatting.  I heard reports of the girls being way too chatty together in the nap room.  They went on and on about Daddy being at home and coming to get them later and about Mommy and Daddy being happy if they sleep.  Abby even got up off of her mat and ran across the room.  She got so noisy at one point that she had to be taken out of the room to quiet down.  Tomorrow they are going to try putting them on separate ends of the room for the first time.  This morning I heard Zoë a bit before 6a.m. saying "Abby, what you doin', What doin' Abby, you sleeping?" She kept saying this until then I heard Abby responding.  Tonight they were a bit chatty as well, but went to sleep after not too long.

Oragami Airplanes

Daddy recently found his book of oragami.  This afternoon he made a few paper airplanes for Abby and Zoë.  Abby got hers first and Daddy showed her how to use it.  She crashed a bit, but got a few good throws in.  Abby brought hers to me over and over saying "look, look, look at this" and then running off to throw it some more.  She wouldn't let me touch it though.  Zoë let me toss hers, and kept bringing it back, even though I mostly crashed it into the wall.

Through the Door

Lately after I say my goodnights to the girls I've been standing outside their door to listen to the conversation that insues.  Tonight I had prompted both Abby and Zoë to say their goodnight's and I love you's to each other and they kept on with it after I left.  Abby even added in "sweet dreams Zoë." After a couple of rounds Zoë started saying "shhh, be quiet"  Then she whispered it, then said it again very sternly.  After that she said "One, two, three... mime out (time out), two minutes."  Then all was silent and I haven't heard a peep, besides deep breathing,  since.

Day 5 - No More Paci's

We had a minor snafu with paci requests at nap today, but nothing big.  Zoë was really cranky while eating lunch and said that she wanted to get cleaned up and go up to bed.  I got her all tucked in and told her I'd be right back with Abby.  After I got them set, Zoë started crying and said "I be quiet, go downstairs."  I explained to her that she wasn't upstairs because she was too noisy downstairs, but that because it was nap.  She didn't get this right away and was upset for a little bit.  I went back in to pat her back and as she was drifting off Abby started making silly noised with her mouth, which Zoë found quite amusing.  I left the room and it took them so long to finally fall asleep as they were so busy playing.  Tonight went just fine and they were out minutes after I left the room.

Zoe, It looks like you are begining to realize what you need to do when you are having a hard time being quiet. Way to go.

Grampy's Birthday Gathering

We headed to Dos Amigos this afternoon to surprise Grampy for his birthday.  We showed up first and played around with Abby and Zoë a bit.  My sister Susie, her husband Mike, and my nephew Patrick showed up next.  Just after they arrived Grampy came in with Reanna and Corey.  He was thoroughly surprised that we were all there.  While we were waiting for the food I was walking around with Abby and Zoë.  A woman stopped to ask if they were twins and then pointed out her identical twin daughters, who were probably in their early teens.  She discussed some of the things that go along with the pregnancy and early years of raising twins.  Her "twin b" also had the fuller face and was a Daddy's girl... interesting.  At the table Abby kept telling me "I want my foooood", it was funny.  Daddy shared his fish taco with her and she kept saying "Fishy, fishy fishy".  After lunch we went back to Auntie Reanna's for treats.  Both girls were thrilled to be having the chocolate cherry trifle and the apple pie a lá mode.  I had both of the girls sitting in front of me giving them bites and Abby goes "Oh, Grampy has some" and ran to the living room to sample his dessert.  She kept going back and forth trying to score even more dessert.  They were running up and down the hallway as usual, even slithering around on their bellies saying they were "swimming".  They played with the legos, of course, and Abby was very pleased to find one with a picture of a "fiiisshhhyy" on it.  Lots of visiting and lots of fun later, we packed up and headed home to wind down before bed.

Day Four - In the Clear?

Today there were no paci's at school again, then tonight Zoë half-heartedly asked for it once and that was the end of it.  Then her and Abby went on to talking about how the garbage recyclers took them and that new babies have them now.  After I shut their door they were singing the "roll over" song and "wheels on the bus".

No More Paci's - Day / Night 3

Today both Abby and Zoë went right down for nap at school without paci's.  This is definitely going much much easier than I thought.  I had figured that I'd have to get them used to not having paci's at home first and then work on school.  Tonight they asked for them once and then that was it.  Zoë was upset, but that was because she had a runny/stuffy nose.  She wanted a tissue, then for me to blow her nose, then a tissue, etc. etc. etc.  She calmed down shortly after and slept nicely after that.

Operation Paci Recycled - Day 2

Both Abby and Zoë have grasped the concept of the recycling men taking their pacifiers.  Zoë didn't even use one during her nap time at school.  Abby needed one a few minutes after laying down.  This evening Laura had to run an errand, so after we put the girls down, I was left in charge for what people call, "the worst" night of pacifier weaning.  I was shocked that Zoë was having problems going to sleep while Abby was snoring away.  I had to go up three times to comfort her.  I layed her down and patted her back.  When Laura arrived home, I asked her if she thought it was going to be harder than this.  She was happily surprised that this process is going as well as it is.  We were worried that it would be much more difficult on them and us.

Bye-Bye Paci's - Night 1

We've been preparing Abby and Zoë for a while now about getting rid of their paci's.  For the past few days I've been telling them how many days left until we give them away.  With nap room issues at school, we told them that we would keep one paci in their cubby at school but that there would be no more paci's at home after we gave them away.  They decided a while ago that we would give them to the garbage recyclers.  As the day got closer, I was getting more and more nervous and second guessing our decision.  This morning I gave each girl a baggy and we gathered up the paci's.  On our way out the door both of the girls went onto the porch and put their paci filled baggies into the recycling bin.  They were excited about it and got into the car happily.  On the way to school we saw both a garbage truck and a recycling truck.  When I mentioned that they were going to our house to take away our things, Abby started whining for her paci.  Back at home we got them dinner and a bubble bath.  We kept to the routine and whenever they asked for a paci I just reminded them that they were all gone and we didn't have anymore at home.  I let each girl pick out a story and after they were done came the tense moments.  I tried to stay upbeat about things and tucked the girls in.  They were crying, but not hysterical when I left the room a little before 6:30.  About five minutes later I went in to calm very upset girls.  There were a few more trips like this, but by about the third time in things started turning for the better.  Abby, who was the most worked up at this point, asked for a drink of water.  I gave both girls a small sip and Abby then just asked to be tucked in.  Zoë was still a bit upset so I was shushing her and Abby started saying "garbage recylers take them away Zoë"  in a very upbeat matter-of-fact kind of way.  She kept saying variations of this as I left the room and even after I shut the door.  This time she stayed quiet and it was just Zoë crying.  Just as I was getting ready to go up again, Zoë started to quiet down.  Right around 7:00 p.m. all was quiet.  Just half an hour, not bad at all.  I'm not breathing easy yet, as there is plenty of night and opportunities for the girls to wake wanting paci's ahead of us... but I'm quite pleased with how things have gone thus far.

First Chipped Tooth

Abby was in the book corner picking out a book and another child was having some issues apparently with Abby taking the books off the shelves.  The other child pushed into her and Abby fell into the shelf.  I didn't realize it right away, but when I was changing Abby's diaper I got a good look at her mouth and noticed her front tooth is chipped.  At first it looked like half the tooth was missing, but then it turned out it was just the bottom part.  I was so upset for her.  The tooth is so sharp now.  She went in for nap and a few minutes later was brought back out for tylenol.  Apparently she had been pressing on her tooth and whimpering.  Since then she hasn't seemed to be too bothered by it, but won't let Chris or I get our hands on it.  We've got to get her into a dentist to make sure it didn't affect anything in the gumline and maybe see if we can get it filed down.

Pajama Day

I was all excited this morning to just have to change Abby and Zoë's diapers and not get them out of their pj's and into clothes.  However, when I got Zoë out of bed the front of her pants and part of her shirt was wet... too many sips of water throughout the night I guess.  I cleaned her up and let her pick out new pj's, and moved on to Abby.  Turned out that she also had too much water during the night.  I couldn't believe it.  It has been so long since either of them has leaked through their diapers during the night.  We made it to school, Abby and I both wearing our bathrobes as coats, and lots of the other kids were in their pj's as well.  From soft footsie pj's, to nightgowns we were all decked out.

First Haircut

I've been debating for a little while now about cutting Abby and Zoë's hair.  A lot of other girls their age we know have gotten haircuts that have made their hair look really nice and healthy.  I wondered how much I should cut, should I cut one different than the other, should I even cut it at all.  I finally decided to just give them each a small trim to even out the ends.  We showered this morning and then Chris got some newpaper for them to stand on and, of course, the camera.  I put them each in their little undies and stood them in place when it was their turn.  I was nervous to start the actual cutting.  Chris asked how much I was going to cut and I told him "As little as possible." Zoë went first, she was nervous to begin with but warmed up to it.  I tried to go really quickly and barely cut any.  Abby went second and was nervous pretty much the whole time.  She kept putting her chin all the way to her chest, then she'd look right up at Chris, then down to the floor again.  She ended up getting a little bit more cut off than Zoë due in part to all the head movement.  It's not really so noticeable, just that it's now straight across.  When I put their hair in pony tails today it didn't really look any different than before.  This evening after I took her hair out of her pony tail, I noticed a few too many spots that I had missed on Zoë's hair.  So, when we brought the girls upstairs to get ready for bed, I tried to do a quick fix-up.  She was all for it and kept saying "Quick cut, Mommy?  Fix my haircut?"

The .88 Cent Isle

Today at Wal-Mart we got the girls a soft glow night light, which I'd told Abby we would do since she is doing so well going pee on the toilet at school.  After this we went by the toy section and wandered through the isles.  We ended in the isle that we've dubbed as the " .88 cent isle", since every little trinket seemed to be that price.  Chris was quite excited about all of the little balls and treats.  The girls picked out a small magna doodle type board and once we got to the car we opened them up so the girls could use them.  There is a large one of these at school and both girls are always asking to "write" on it.  They even got to taste Daddy's lollipop when we got home.

Third St. Patrick's Day

Green, Green, Green, I made sure we were all wearing green today... and then didn't get a single photo, bad Mommy I know.  Abby had on a green long sleeved shirt with jeans and green socks to match (thanks to Auntie Elizabeth).  She had dark green bowties in her pig tails too.  Zoë had on a white shirt with light green sparkle cordoroy pants and wore her green sweater that matches. She too had pig tails, hers had light green hairties.  Mommy wore a green t-shirt that Nonno sent to Daddy a while ago from an Irish pub in Atlantic city with some saying about Irish and Italians... I'm not sure what it means, but it went with the holiday.  At school all of the kids were dressed in some sort of green, and almost all of the girls had pig tails with green hairties.  Hannah had the exact same outfit on as Zoë, even the sweater.  Mommy finished the craft that I had made for the parents.  They are gold painted cups with a rainbow coming off the side and some yellowish/gold cotton balls inside the cup and the kids' silver footprint on green paper is inside the cup.  That's the treasure at the end of the rainbow. The project was time consuming and I didn't get to finish Abby and Zoë's rainbows, so I just brought their footprints home.  Auntie Reanna came by a little while before it was time to go home and she was all dressed up.  Green ribbons in her hair, a green shirt, shamrock stickers by her eyes, home made green "rope" belt... the works.  Abby and Zoë were very excited to see her and show her their classroom.  At home the girls got to put together their own salads and had french fries on top, Pennsylvania style (plus a couple of fish sticks for good measure).  Zoë was tired and definitely in need of some snuggles and lego building... then off to bed.

Nonno Ernie... and Bert

This evening while I was getting Abby and Zoë ready for bed, Abby picked out a diaper with sesame street's Ernie on the front.  I mentioned that Nonno's name is Ernie and Zoë started saying "Nonno Ernie".  She was saying Enrie very high pitched and putting a lot of emphasis on the "Er".  It sounded so funny and I was laughing so hard. This made Zoë laugh even harder and she kept saying it, really getting her voice high when saying Ernie.  She must have realized that that is what I found funny.  After they had pj's on and were in their beds, both girls started calling him "Nonno Bert".  They are such funny girls!

This morning I only had a couple of bags to carry so I decided to have both of the girls walk in with me instead of driving them in the stroller.  Angie was walking up as we were and Zoë jumped at the chance to hold her hand on the way in.  I stopped at the staff room and then Zoë held my hand and Abby held Zoë's other hand.  They went down the ramp together and met me at the bottom and then took off for the classroom.  We practiced walking in lines today too and from the side room.  They also got their foot painted.  Both of the girls squirmed and got a little freaked out when I was painting the bottom of their feet... I guess we just don't do enough messy crafts at home.  Abby woke up first from nap (trading places with Zoë, who slept for almost three hours) and got to do lots of walking with me to run little errands.

Another Sick Day

Zoë had a rough night and woke up with a fever.  She immediately wanted to stay home with daddy.  Of course Abby wanted to stay home as well, not to miss out on all the fun.  Zoë was not her usual happy self.  She said she wanted to take a nap at 10 AM.  This is not their normal routine.  But she kept saying she "want to lay down", "want to sleep".  So I put her and Abby down shortly after 10.  Abby woke up at 11:30 and Zoë got up as well.  I got them both ready for lunch and Abby ate almost the whole pizza, Zoë only had one slice and then wanted to lay down again.  I checked her temperature and it was 102.5 F.  I gave her some more medicine and put her back to bed.  She slept another 2 1/2 hours.  I had to wake her up for snack at 2:30.  Abby had some alone time with Daddy.  We played Legos, Dominos, colored pictures for mommy, read some books, etc...  She had a fun time.  Once Zoë was up and snacked, Abby got slightly moody.  She didn't want to share toys, share my attention or anything else.  We worked hard to get the place cleaned up before mommy came home from work.  By evening Zoë was feeling much better and her fever was down.  Hopefully they won't get sick from this round of colds.

Dinner Out and Ice Cream

Abby and Zoë arrived home late from school this evening.  I was awaiting their arrival with bibs in hand.  Laura knows what that means, dinner out.  We have not been to Maine in a while so we thought it would be a good idea to visit for dinner.  We drove over the bridge to the famous Bob's Clam Hut.  Laura likes this place because it is attached to a Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop.  We got some haddock and shrimp dinners to share.  Abby had been eating like crazy, making up for missed time while being sick.  She ate tons of "shrimpies" and pieces of fish.  She even tried the cole slaw, fries and onion rings.  They both enjoyed dipping the "shrimpies" and fish in the tartar sauce.  Zoë ate well but not as much as Abby.  At the end of dinner while Zoë was getting cleaned up, she was giving Abby all the "shrimpies" that she had left.  Abby just kept shoveling them in, one after the other until her cheeks were all puffed out like a squirrel.  I didn't think they had room left for a dessert, but they both surprised me.  I knew they would find a place for that ice cream cone.  We stopped by the drive through on a way home for their cones.  Laura hopped in the back to monitor the girls and take photos.  They ate the whole cones in very little time.  They were done by the time we arrived home, and it was a very quick car ride.

Daddy on Duty

This evening I had to go back out after work for a training, and was nervous that Abby and Zoë would not go down well with a different routine.  I had been preparing them all day for this event, but then once they were eating dinner we decided that I could leave 10 minutes later than I had planned and put them to bed a little early.  They went down really easily, despite it being early. I got home late and was sure that the girls would have been up at least once, but Chris said that they didn't make a peep the whole time I was gone.

Bench Shopping Cart

Today we did a really fast grocery shopping trip.  We usually take an hour to gather our goods from the store.  Today's trip was a quick 30 minutes.  We did not buy as many things and the girls were sitting in the bench cart the whole trip.  This is their first time in the bench cart.  They didn't seem to mind.  Laura had their lunch ready so they would not be so cranky.  We stopped by the Lobsters after picking up our fruit and vegetables, then over for a quick visit at the deli for some cheese.  Then we breezed through the next couple of isles, picked up the juice and some frozen foods, then over to the dairy/yogurt section.  I picked up some bread and english muffins before pasing by the baker.  They didn't have any treats out to sample today so we moved right to check out.  The girls were in some crazy mood at the check out all giggly and cuddly.

Grampy Concert

Grampy came over after the girls had a nap.  Actually, Zoë was up but Abby was still sleeping until about 10 or so minutes later.  He brought along his guitar and the girls were quite interested in it.  We went for a walk to the post office and the health food store, where the girls got to taste mint carob covered rice cake and a bit of organic dark chocolate, plus fruit leather, then when we got home it was time for a concert from Grampy.  Abby and Zoë sat in their little chairs in front of the couch and were mesmerized as Grampy started with "Johnny Be Good".  When he was done both girls wanted to try strumming, then Grampy sang another song.  Auntie Reanna and Uncle Corey arrived a little bit later and Auntie wanted to hear an encore of Johnny Be Good, as it had been a while since we'd heard Grampy singing with his guitar.  It was fun and brought back memories for Auntie and Mommy.  The girls had a great visit with Grampy and Zoë got very pouty when it was time to say goodnight.  Abby just kept reaching back to Grampy to give him "one more hug".  It's always nice to have a (former) country rock singer for a Grampy.

Big Fast Slide

Abby and Zoë were not so interested in this big slide this time.  On our last visit, it was hard to keep them off it.  This visit, almost 6 months later, it was hard to get them to go down the slide at all.  Here I finally picked up Abby and we went down together.  She was really scared.

Rumble Tumble

Dakota's mom, Leann, told us about the family gym time that they have on saturday mornings.  They only let a limited number of people come, so she said it would be a good time for them to come and run around the place.  We arrived and both girls were very excited to get going.  Just after we got their coats and shoes off, Dakota's grandparents arrived with Dakota.  Leann was holding Abby and walked with her out the door to greet Dakota.  Dakota pointed and said "Abby".  This is pretty good, as the majority of the kids at school still can't tell Abby and Zoë apart.  The girls started off on the trampoline, then did some balance beam and off to the adventure structure.  It took a while to coax the girls to go through it, but once they saw Dakota doing it all by herself, they were up for Chris and I helping them.  They played on the wood floor section and then followed Dakota into the playroom, which is where we ended our time.  Both girls were quite upset to be leaving, but they were definitely ready for some food in their bellies and a good long nap.

Colors and Shapes - March

Every month our class has two colors, a shape, and a theme that we focus on.  This month our colors are green and purple, the shape is clover, and the theme is St. Patrick's Day / Birds.  Abby and Zoë are so good with their colors and shapes already.  They even know the difference between light and darks (such as light and dark blues).  They know the basic shapes, plus hexagon and octagon.  Finally, this month we've got a new shape for them.  They didn't know clover, so it's nice to see them expand their knowledge.  This afternoon everyone had a piece of paper with a clover outline and they got green crayons to color them in.  We talked about the clover shape and how they grow in the grass.  Then on the paper we wrote "Green Clover" when they were done.  Simple, but the girls had fun and were the last one's left coloring at the table.

Rockin' and a Rollin'

I found an "Oldies, but goodies" cd in our classroom at school and decided to play some of the songs on it for the kids today.  Zoë was the first one up from nap and got to listen to a little.  I put on "Johnny Be Good" for her to listen to.  It's one that I grew up hearing a lot of.  I told her that Grampy used to sing that song and she held on tight to me as we danced around a bit.  After all of the other kids were up and done with snack, I told a little boy in our class, whose name is Johnny, that I would play that song for him so all of the kids were dancing around to it.  They were all having so much fun grooving so I played a few more songs from the cd for them to dance to.  We all had lots of fun!

An Hour Away

I had to leave school for about an hour this morning for an appointment.  I was a bit nervous about how Abby and Zoë would react at my leaving.  This morning while I was getting the girls dressed for school I told them that after we went into the side room to play, I would be going to the dr.'s to get some medicine and they would be staying and playing with Miss Danielle and Miss Katie.  Zoë talked it over with me a couple of more times, but Abby wasn't warming up to the idea.  She told me that she was going to go home with Daddy.  We discussed it again breifly at breakfast once Daddy came downstairs, and then were off to school.  When we got to school Miss Danielle wasn't there, out sick for the day.  This made me concerned that Abby and Zoë would have a harder time with me leaving because things were different.  Lisa B. was able to come in for me from the 1 year old room.  When we got into the side room I told Abby, Zoë, and Emily, who was standing near and a bit attached to me.  When Lisa came in she scooped up Zoë and held Abby's hand, but it was Emily who started crying when I left the room.  When I came back I went straight to the classroom to get lunches set up.  I didn't hear any reports of a lot of crying while I was gone, but while I was setting up the lunches Lisa came in and said "so she did see you."  I questioned her statement and she said that she thought I had peeked in the window of the side room because just at the time I was coming in the doors, one of the girls started crying... as if she sensed I was back in the building.

Horse Nightmares

Last night a little while after getting off to sleep, Zoë woke up crying.  She had her paci and lovies still, but was upset.  I tucked her in and she was seemingly calm.  She did this a few more times.  It seemed as if she was scared of something.  Finally I told her that she was fine, and I wasn't going to come in anymore and I'd see her in the morning... next time she called for Daddy.  He took one turn and she seemed to be quiet.  I was almost off to sleep when she cried for me another time.  I went in and tucked her in and told her that she needed to stay tucked in.  This morning at breakfast Chris asked her about all her crying and she said "There's horses".  Chris asked where there were horses, thinking maybe she was onto a different topic, and she replied "In my bed".  We questioned a little further, asking if there were horses in her bed last night and she confirmed this.  Chris told her to tell horses to go sleep in their own beds, and she was saying that all day.  When she'd bring it up I told her that, yes, horsies should sleep in their own beds and that they sleep in stables.   This afternoon and evening she was still going on about the horses.  While getting ready for bed she was talking about it some more and it seemed to ease her mind for us to reassure her that horses can't fit in her bed and that they were already sleeping.  Abby, who hadn't spoken about Zoë's bad dream at all during the day, was getting really freaked out.  After Chris went back downstairs and it was time to get pj's on, Abby was whimpering and huddling in close to me.  I had to call Chris back upstairs and we both went over how it was just a dream and horsies can't fit into the house or in the beds and that they were already sound asleep in their stalls outside and far away.  Since tucking them both in, Zoë has been sleeping soundly, but Abby has already been up multiple times.  Last time I went in I sat by her crib and held her hand for a while.  She was still somewhat awake when I left, but settled for a kiss and a tuck.  I haven't heard from her in about an hour now.

McDonald's At Last

After a few attempts, we finally made it to McDonald's with no mishaps.  We swung by the house after school to pick Daddy up, and after a quick errand, were ready to order.  Abby and Zoë got a filet-o-fish sandwich, and a large sized fries to share.  They each got their own milks.  Abby chomped down her half of the sandwich, but Zoë ate more fries than fish.  Both girls liked their milk "bottles" and the big straws to drink with.  We got the two pie deal and treated the girls to a little taste of the apple and the cherry.   Yes, the girls were "lovin' it".

Grelmo

When Zoë sees her "nighttime" diapers with grover on them she always exlaims "Grelmo!" I guess he does look a lot like a blue version of elmo.  I've told her lots of times "Yes, that's Grover" but she still thinks he's grelmo.  It's too cute.

Smoother Running

We had a lot of kids again today, our average day now will be 11 kids in class, but things ran smoother than yesterday.  I had a lot of fun with my goofy girls, who both got good naps.  I've been trying to turn Zoë's little hitting "fits" into high fives.  Whenever she tries or looks like she's going to try to swat at me I say "Oh, you'd like a high five?" After a few high fives and tens, she usually just goes about her merry little way.  Abby is joining in with group activities more now.  It's so cute to watch her dancing around and singing with the crowd.  She's great at doing our exercises, and sat all the way through music "circle" time, even when I left the room to go get the buggy.

Lots of Sharing

With 12 kids in the class today, Abby and Zoë had a lot of sharing to do.  Not only did they have to share their Mommy, they had to share the space in the room, the toys, puzzles, and books.  Two of the kids were twin boys, Keegan and Kaiser, who were there just for the day as their Grandma works for the church.  Even though they didn't really play together so much, Abby and Zoë seemed to have a bit of an understanding with them.  Also, unlike the other kids, Abby and Zoë never once lumped the two boys together and I don't think they got mixed up as to who was who either.  After a bit of a crazy morning, we took all of the kids to the "big room" to let the kids run around in a nice open space.  After some good exercise, and food in the bellies, almost all of the kids slept until 2:40 in the afternoon.  Kaiser and Keegan woke up first, then one of the other boys and then Zoë and Abby's friend Dakota.  Just before snack Zoë woke up and it was just those five for 10 plus minutes.  Both girls had a really good afternoon, especially considering all of those kids.

Toy Store Fun

After the long nap, and getting some food into their bellies, we decided to take Abby and Zoë to Toys R' Us.  I was hoping to find a new changing pad, but Abby and Zoë were just thrilled to roam the isles with us.  They checked out the legos, the water toys, stuffed animals, motorized "cars" and the bikes, and anything else they could stop to check out.  They had a blast, and we had a great time watching their excitement.

Grabby Hands

Abby and Zoë want to be so involved at the store now.  As we walk down the isles Abby will drag her hands along everything.  Whenever we point something out to them or stop to pick something off of a shelf, both girls just grab things to put into the cart.  They want to help so much, that they don't always wait for us to tell them how.  They did very well at the grocery store today, and didn't complain when we put them in the carts a little bit before heading to check out.  I guess it helped that Daddy had gotten them each a little cookie at the bakery.  When we got home, Abby decided that a nap was in order before lunch.  I thought they may not sleep as long since they hadn't had a full lunch, but Chris went to wake them both up at almost the 3 hour mark.

Saturday Visitors

This morning Zoë woke up singing away at 6:00.  She quieted down but then around 6:30 she started asking for water.  I sent Chris in, hoping that she wouldn't think it was time to get up if it was him getting her some water.  I heard some rustling and then a few minutes later he was calling me.  I went in to see him snuggled under the comforter in the crib with Zoë trying to get him to rise.  His hand was through the bars holding Abby's hand, who was reaching out, apparently feeling left out.  I got Abby's paci off of the floor and climbed in with her and she snuggled right up.  This didn't last nearly long enough and soon we were all up getting showered and dressed and downstairs for some breakfast.  We played around the house, and the girls helped me make them a special peanut butter spread as well as a higher calorie milk shake.  They had the special peanut butter with jelly in a sandwich for lunch.  After nap they had some of their shake and then off we went to Wal-mart to pick up a few things.  As soon as we got back home Uncle Matt and Auntie showed up.  There was lego playing, book reading, and lots of running around sillies.  For dinner the girls got to share some take-out, which Uncle Corey and Auntie Reanna arrived in time for.  They had some shrimp lo-mein, shrimp fried rice, and crab rangoon.  They definitely didn't want to stop playing to get ready for bed, but their little bodies were tired and settled right in once I tucked them in.  They always love when their Aunties and Uncles come to visit.

Treats Postponed

We had to postpone our scheduled treat outing today.  On our way to spend Nonna's McDonalds Arch Gift Cards Abby got sick in the car.  She started to throw up and we had to go back home to get everything cleaned up.  Zoë was upset as we pulled into the driveway.  She kept saying, "I want to eat at restaurant."  Once we got them inside I gave them the last of their ice cream.  I figured Abby would want something soothing for her throat.  The little bit they had in the cups was soon consumed.  They then had a bowl of hot grape nuts with chocolate milk.  They liked the hot treat after the cold icecream.  They ate very well considering the ice cream appetizer.  The nutritionist wants them to gain a pound in a month so we are loading on the calories in the form of treats.  The mere mention of a Gummy turns unruley toddlers into proper listening well disciplined children.  Even though mommy ate the last packet of gummys almost a week ago.  Laura thinks it is mean that I keep offering them Gummys to behave, but I think it works just fine.

Mommy Tester Button Pushers

Abby and Zoë have been testing me all day today.  They seem to know every button to push.  Especially Zoë has been so fresh lately!  Abby has been whiney lately and really freaks out when I even get close to a door and she thinks I might be going somewhere.  Today when I was changing someone else's diaper she told me it was her turn.  Then, after she had her turn and even peed on the toilet, she again tried to push someone else out of the way saying it was her turn.  Zoë gets really fresh, either when she's wanting my undivided attention and I can't give it, or when she doesn't want to do something I've been asking her to do she says "no Mommy" Or "stop it, right now Mommy... no"  Sometimes she will even bat at me, or at whoever else is not doing just as she'd like... usually her sister.  Zoë was just really pushing all my buttons this afternoon right before it was time to go home.  They had asked to go to "Mc-a-donawds" to use the "arch cards" that Nonna sent.  As we were getting ready to go I had to tell them that we weren't going to be able to go since they were both not being listeners.  As we pulled into the driveway Abby started whining, then Zoë that they wanted to go to McDonald's and I had to remind them and tell them that they could try again tomorrow for this special treat.  We all made up later with snuggles and story time... I can't stay frustrated with my special girls for long.

Zoë gets really excited lately when she sees me, so excited that she will yell and dance and stomp around while yelling.  It is so funny, it is like she is one of those people you see at a concert all flipped out because they actually got to see a rock star up close.  It makes me feel good that I have such great fans.  Both Abby and Zoë get excited to see me, especially when I pick them up from school.  Most likely because I always try to be the one to give them their treats and specials.  I can't let mommy be the "good" guy, because we all know that good cop and good cop don't work.  One of us has to be the bad cop and I don't want that to be me.  Sometimes when Zoë sees me she will yell, "Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" and stomp, jump, and basically flip out.  So lately I have been telling her that Daddy is a Rock Star.  It is so funny to hear her say, "yeah, Daddy is a rock star."  Then I ask, "Who is your rock star?"  Zoë will then reply, "Daddy!"  I love the attention.  It really makes me feel like I am the only rock star on this earth.

Cooking Crepes

Tonight Abby and Zoë helped me cook crepes for dinner.  I let them sit on the floor and work the tools themselves.  Most of the time I let them help me, but this time I thought they could handle some of it on their own.  I let each of them pour in some flour with a measuring cup, add some sugar, some cinnamon, some vanilla extract, and milk.  They then took turns using the whisk to mix it up.  Mommy broke the eggs and stirred them in.  Mixing is by far their most favorite part.  They love to mix things up, even pretending.  I cooked the crepes while mommy got them settled in their chairs.  They turned out great.  We let Abby and Zoë dip their crepes in jelly and chocolate syrup while mommy made peanut butter and jelly roll ups out of her crepes.
