Halloween Festivities

We tried to cram in all of the fun events for the kids in our immediate area in today, especially since we did NOT score any points yesterday, when we realized far too late that it was trick-or-treating night for our town.  By too late I mean that kids were roaming the streets and we were shutting off lights because we had no candy to give out.

First we went to Home Depot, where there were candy dishes set up at certain stations and then a haunted house.  It really wasn't so spooky, but neither of the girls were willing to open the door and then when I opened it they were clutching us, not wanting to go in.  I had Abby's hand, and was holding Enzo and proceeded to walk on in, but Abby pulled me back out, total fear had overcome her.  Chris and I said we were going in anyway, so naturally the girls reluctantly followed and realized it wasn't so bad.  Enzo on the other hand was gripping his arms around my next and crying the whole time (a total of maybe a minute) until I exited, which surprised me.

After nap we went to an outdoor harvest party down the road with fun inflatables and games.  Luckily the weather was oddly, and useasonably warm, in the low 70's!  The girls did the inflatable race thing first, then the big inflatable slide, which looked like so much fun that I decided to take Enzo down.  Besides getting candy at the other game stations, the slide was definitely the girls' favorite thing there.  And, there was no admission fee or any fees for inflatables and games. (There was also an inflatable bouncy castle and an inflatable battle zone of some sort, that the girls begged to do but were denied)

From there we headed to the mall, where we'd seen that there would be mall wide trick-or-treating.  It turned out to be a mad house, with both sides of the walkways filled with lines of people walking around the outskirts collecting candy.  We decided to leave there before we'd hit all of the stores and got some dinner before heading into town to watch the Halloween parade.  Here the girls got even more candy, as some of the parade walkers would randomly throw candy as they passed.

sounds like you were a little scared but it turned out okay.
Remember the huricane wind machine. It was scary at first, but then you realized that it was so bad after all.
sometimes things that are scary have a good ending and sometimes scary things end and that is a good thing.
there wasn't one trick or treater that had a costume like yours.
Papa Norm had fun handing out candy while Grandma Cindy took the dogs for a walk and visited the neighbor lady who was dressed up as Tigger

School Work Love

I'm so happy that Zoë and Abby enjoy their workbooks.  They enjoy all of our lesson time stuff, but their math and spelling they actually get excited about.  The spelling workbooks we had given to us are really fun for both girls.  Today, after I got back from doing car stuff, I asked if the girls had done their work while I was gone.  They said that they had and then Zoë said to me, "And my spelling pages were so much fun!"

I have a little game for you to play.
Count how many books you have about love
How many are about night time
How many are about dogs
then total the amount that you have

Finishing the Window

Zoë and Abby were so happy to get to help finish up the window today!  Unfortunately we had some rain and weren't able to get out there and finish it up until today.  I'm surprised how much the girls don't mind being dragged to one home improvement store or another time and again to get little odds and ends, such as clamps.

The girls mostly observed, but also got to help steady some things and got to watch as Chris and I attached the frame - Chris from outside the house and me safely inside to hold it in place - and finally as it was put in place.  Abby was happy when she got to go to the basement to get the tube of caulking, and felt very proud when her and Zoë were asked to go back to the basement to put something away and she got to show Zoë were the box with the tubes were "just in case Zoë ever needed to go get one for Daddy... she'll know where they are."

Pink Panther

Chris found some old pink panther cartoons for the girls and they just think they're so funny.  I remember watching them as a kid and even had a little pink panther stuffed animal.  With Chris and I trying to keep the work on the house in forward movement, Zoë and Abby have been able to watch more than I like to admit.  If they're finished with their school work and Enzo is either napping or in the backpack with me, then they get to take a break from 'housework helpers' or 'Enzo entertainers' and watch some cartoons.

Real Kisses from Enzo

All of the sudden Enzo has started giving real kisses when you ask for one.  Previously you got the open mouth, shove his face into your cheekbone.  Now he puckers up and makes a bunch of the kissy noises as he nears your cheek and then grins big and usually gives a nice hug to accompany.  The first time I noticed him do this was when I was tucking the girls into their beds.  He watched me give 'cheeky kisses' to Abby and then he mimicked me and wanted to give his sisters proper kisses goodnight too... it's so cute!

Window Helpers

Zoë and Abby were so excited to be able to help install our first new window today.  They tied bandanas on their heads and prepared to help run tools to Daddy, plug in extension cords, and mostly be cheerleaders.  They watched saw work, sometimes got to help steady boards, went up a few rungs of the ladder, and even got a chance to go out the window to sit on the pump staging... very briefly.  I think, even though there wasn't a ton they could help with, just the bit they got to do made them feel like they have some ownership of the job well done.

Choir Singing and Birthday Party

We had a full day today.  I had the girls to church early so they could rehearse to sing during the service.  Grampy joined us to visit and see Zoë and Abby sing.  They sang two songs with the kids choir: Like a River and Down in my Heart.

After church the girls had some time to visit with Grampy and then they got into their costumes to go to a halloween themed birthday party.  It was held in the kids room at Families First, so all three of the kids felt right at home.  There was a craft and a couple of games, snacks and cupcakes.  Also the kids were able to play on the little playground right outside the room.

First 3D Movie and Good-byes

After having breakfast at IHOP we went and got our tickets for our first ever 3D movie, and in a theater at that.  It's been ages since we've seen a movie in a theater, the five of us anyway, but the 3D part was a first for everyone.  We had an hour until the movie started so we meandered around the mall for a while.  We saw "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" and Enzo even cooperated by nursing and napping after the awe of the giant movie wore off.

Later on, in the afternoon, it was time to say good-bye to Grandma Cindy and Papa Norm, as they were going to spend some time with Uncle Tommy and then tomorrow they'll be leaving for the airport in the morning.  We had a nice visit and look forward to the next one!

Lowe's Build - Frankenstring

We made the trek to Lowe's this morning so that Zoë and Abby could make the Frankenstein trick box called the frankenstring.  We can't wait until the Lowe's close to us opens in December!  Both of the girls are really getting good at these builds, especially with the kid sized hammers that they get to use at Lowe's.  I'm not sure if it's because of her left-handedness, but Zoë does tend to have some trouble with the aim of the hammer, but other than that she powers the nails right in there.

Halloween Party at the YMCA

We said good-bye to Grandma Cindy and Papa Norm this afternoon and then this evening I got the kids into their costumes and we headed over to the Y for their halloween party.  This year Zoë chose to dress up as Pocohantus, Abby chose Snow White, and I chose a turtle costume for Enzo.

The first thing we did was hit the bounce house.  Zoë and Abby were the first ones in, and I was going to let Enzo go in with me, but then some bigger kids came so I kept Enzo out.  Zoë and Abby had a good time bouncing around in there though.  Next the girls did a relay race with another child and Zoë won!  She was so excited that she won, even though the other child was an older boy.  After that we moved on to sugar cookie decorating and treat bag decorating.  Even Enzo got to decorate a bag.  The girls made some magnet ghosts and got their faces painted.  Then there were a couple of 'ball' tosses and ring tosses.  Enzo joined in on these, and even though he walked right up to the container and dropped the ball (goulish squishy thing) and the toad into their buckets, he still got prizes... a skeleton straw and a noise maker.  We stayed for about an hour and then headed home to get our little party goers to bed.

Orthodontist Help

This morning Grandma Cindy accompanied Enzo and I to my orthodontist appointment.  Once we got in the door and Enzo got his diaper changed, I helped get him situated in the wrap with my mom.  It was his morning nap time, but he was trying to convince Grandma Cindy otherwise.  Finally, just a few minutes before I was finished, he crashed.

Meanwhile, Zoë and Abby took a walk into town with Papa Norm and Daddy.  After checking the post office box, they went to Me & Olie's and got a few little treats before walking back home.  Once at home, they played a Care Bears board game and then Papa Norm joined them on the couch for, what else, Barbie Diamond Castle.

Blue Job Hike

We hiked Mount Blue Job for a second time, this time with Grandma Cindy and Papa Norm.  It was a beautiful fall day, perfect for a fairly easy hike.  Once we got to the top, we sat and ate our packed lunches, everyone but Grandma Cindy and myself (and by default, Enzo) climbed the fire tower to get a better view.  The foliage was really pretty and there were ladybugs everywhere.

Once getting back into town we decided to indulge Grandma Cindy and head over to Kittery Trading Post.  She got the girls each a pair of winter tights and a pair of smart wool socks to wear with their winter boots when playing in the snow.  She got me a diaper bag (not intended to be one, but will work nonetheless)  as both of the ones I've been using have broken zippers.  It was on sale for about $30 less than the original price.  ( I know, just the fact that it's originally over $30 to begin with floored me)

From there it was Papa Norm's turn to be indulged, stopping at Loco Coco's on the way home for dinner.  I guess the sound of pasta with absoultely no meat to be heard of didn't excite him. :)

Out and About

This afternoon we went to the Children's Orchard with Papa Norm and Grandma Cindy.  I turned in Enzo's birthday coupon, entitling him to a $5 gift certificate.  I looked around for slippers for him and a couple of other things, but couldn't find anything I wanted to get for him.  We did find a brand new, still wrapped up game of Cranium Cadoo, so we bought that.  Once we were done, we looked around the dollar store then headed over to Coldstone Creamery.  We looked around the nearby kitchen store after we were done with our ice creams and then it was time for Grandma Cindy and Papa Norm to head back to Dover to visit with Uncle Tommy.

We all decided to head into Old Navy, where there were some good sales going on.  We ended up getting a bunch of stuff for around the $2 range and even Daddy found two pair of khakis down to $7.50 each.  Normally they are around $30.  After that we browsed around Best Buy and finally we headed home.

Dover leaf pile - Great Buffet Lunch

We went over to Dover today to visit with everyone.  We walked to the nearby cemetary where Corey and Reanna like to walk during the fall.  They gathered up some leaves and ran and jumped in them.  Afterwards we walked back to their home.  It was lunch time and nobody had plans.  The were not interested in joining us for lunch so we went to the Great Buffet II by ourselves.  Abby and Zoë stuffed themselves completely.  Daddy didn't even have room for dessert, but Abby and Zoë did... two of them!

Abby's Hurt Parts

Abby had to go to the doctor today.  She was outside playing with Aunt Reanna and Grandma Cindy.  Abby was trying to balance on a piece of wood and slipped off and landed on the beam with her legs on either side of it.  I was inside with Enzo and didn't hear anything, but when we were leaving, Grandma Cindy mentioned that Abby fell and hurt crotch.  I didn't think anything of it until later, when she was peeing after nap and was crying hysterically.  My first thought was a UTI, but then I remembered the fall and put a call into the nurse at the pediatrician's office.  She said to put Abby in the car and bring her right in so we took a little drive.  After one of the nurse's did the intake, she mentioned that Dr. Brown would be in shortly.  Abby asked me if I thought Dr. Brown was a man and I said that, yes, he is.  After a few jokes about a doctor named Dr. Pink only being able to be female, Abby let me know that she wasn't comfortable with a man checking her and wanted me to ask for a female instead.  Once the doctor came in, I did just that.  He accomodated, and switched with Dr. Warren.

Abby bruised herself and did have a little abrasion, but nothing needing medical intervention.  We have some treatment things to do at home (borrowing Enzo's diaper cream) but it should be healed quickly.

Snowy Sunday

Elizabeth came with us to church this morning and sat in on Zoë and Abby's choir practice.  Once the girls went up to jr. church, Elizabeth and I took Enzo down to the nursery and played.  Zoë and Abby showed Zia the fellowship hall and their very own kids table, which is the perfect height for them to stand at while they eat their 'coffee hour' treats.  It was cold and blustery, with very thick raindrops when we left church and we decided we could use a little something that we don't get often.  We stopped by the house, where Daddy was working outside in the icky weather, and asked if he'd like some McDonald's food.

In the afternoon, as Daddy was just finishing up outside and was wet and ready for a shower at the Y, we all went along.  Zia Elizabeth and the girls went swimming and then we all got some hot showers.  Later on Grandma Cindy and Papa Norm, who just arrived last night for a visit, along with the Valey's, met us at Shalimar Indian restaurant for a tasty dinner.  As we pulled up, it was snowing!  The girls of course were completely excited, the rest of us not as much.

Farmer's Market

Elizabeth, the kids, and myself bundled ourselves up to walk to the farmer's market and then into the post office this morning.  Once we arrived we just browsed around the different vendors and looked at all there was to see.  After that we decided on getting two sugar pumpkins, each of the girls picked out one.

Once we were done in town we headed back home through the park.  We got a couple of photos of the kids and Elizabeth at the whale statue and then got home for some hot spiced cider to warm us up.

This was our second trip to Shio, this time going with Auntie Elizabeth.  We got a little room, still with the neat table area, where you take off your shoes.  We ordered the croquettes as an appetizer again, and they were just as tasty.  This time around, Enzo got to sample some things as well.  He had some miso broth as well as the tofu pieces and some rice from the bowl, he even enjoyed eating off of the chopsticks... and trying to use them himself.  Zoë and Abby enjoyed the bento lunch box they shared, and of course they sampled things from everyone else's lunch dishes too.

Zoë and Abby always know that there will be some good kitchen time when visiting with Auntie Elizabeth.  (Abby is going back and forth between the title of 'Auntie' and 'Zia' )  The first thing they made were graham crackers, which Enzo greatly enjoyed.  Today we had a roast for dinner and a yummy apple pie for dessert.  Zoë and Abby got to help cut out the heart decorations for the top crust of the pie.  It seems like every minute the girls have a new idea of what they should make next in the kitchen.

Down the Road

Both Zoë and Abby have been talking a lot lately about when they're grown up, mainly about their kids and how they'll behave with their kids.  The discussions vary from how many kids they will and won't make their kids do.  It's so funny to listen to them talk about it and to discuss it with them.  I'm not sure why they're so preoccupied with it and, while I do talk with them about it, I also try to remind them that it won't be happening any time soon, so for now they can just enjoy being a kid themselves.

Auntie Elizabeth Arrives

We were unsure if Elizabeth was going to able to come for the scheduled visit or not right up until today.  So, when Chris was getting ready to go pick her up from the bus station, while Enzo and I were out for a bike ride, he didn't tell the girls where they were going and they were so surprised when they saw Auntie Elizabeth come off the bus!  They've been crazy ever since the car ride home, full of excitement at finally seeing Elizabeth.

When Enzo first saw her, he had just finished getting his diaper changed, and hugged into to me.  Then he gave her a big grin and wiggled to get out of my arms.  After that he ran in little circles squealing, as if she were chasing him.  After dinner we went to the Y and the girls got to go swimming with Elizabeth.  Unfortunately for Elizabeth the heater in the pool had broken earlier in the day and the water still hadn't warmed up.  After all of us telling her that this was the warmest pool on the seacoast.

Kids choir started back up a couple of weeks ago, but today was the first day we made it.  All morning, while getting ready, Abby kept telling Zoë to hurry up so that she wouldn't be late for choir practice.  When we arrived, Zoë wasn't so sure she wanted to join in, which I told her was fine but if she didn't go to practices then she wasn't going to join the group for performances.  She went in and eventually warmed up to singing practice with everyone.

I took the kids to Lowe's this morning so that Zoë and Abby could do the ball toss build.  At first I was a bit nervous of being the one the have to help them put these things together, especially with Enzo in the mix, but thankfully it was an easy build and the girls were able to do the majority of the work themselves.  We did mess up the first one, Abby's, though as one of the back brace pieces got turned around and the toss was lopsided.  Abby had done such a good job of hammering the nails in that we just had to get a new kit.  The upside of that is that we got two extra balls, Enzo was pleased with that.

Zoë and Abby got a bit of an introduction to piano music today.  We were at the Valley's this morning and first of all they got lots of play time with Auntie Reanna and Elijah and once they left we were surprised by Uncle Corey coming home.  He sat with both of the girls at the keyboard and explained the keys and quized them on which was which.  Zoë became more interested in playing the harmonica and reading a book in the other room, but Abby did pretty well, even learning the beginings of Beethoven's Für Elise.

The girls and I went to the library this morning, sans Enzo.  He went down for a nap and stayed home with Daddy.  When we got there, however, we noticed that story time had started back up.  Apparently this is the second week or so that it's been back, we just haven't realized because it's been so long since we've been to the library.  We're usually there at least once a week.  The baby lap time was going on as we were there and the 3 year old and up group was next.  Unfortunately we weren't able to stay for it, since we told Daddy we would try to be home before Enzo woke up.  Now that we know story time is back, we're sure to be there more often.  I'm just going to have to figure out how to work the multi-level story goers though.  Enzo is now too old (read disruptive) to be going to the girls' age group with us and they're way past the baby lap time group.  I really think Enzo would love the lap time though and I know the girls want to go back to their group so we'll have to figure something out.

U Haul Fun

Zoë and Abby had fun with it anyway.  In order to only have to make one trip to the dump and meet the weight requirement, etc. etc. etc., we rented a U-Haul truck to load our siding into.  Zoë and Abby's job was to put the house paper stuff into the paper recycling bins, while Chris and I loaded the truck with the wood.  Enzo, meanwhile, watched from the backpack.  At about 12:30p.m. I finally took the kids in for lunch and then once everyone was down for naps I went back out to help finish up.  Chris drove the truck to the dump and unloaded it all (over half a ton) by himself and then came back.

Zoë and Abby had really wanted turns riding in the passenger seat of the truck and kept talking between themselves about who was going to ride where and when.  We settled for letting them both sit in the truck once the majority of the paper was picked up, while we were still loading the back of the truck up.  I had parked the car down the end of the street since the truck was in the driveway (yes, Chris managed to back it in there) so once we were ready to go return the truck (and then head over to the Y for showers) Chris told the girls that they could ride in the back down to the car.  Enzo and I joined them, sitting and holding onto the boards attached to the walls.  Don't worry, it was like a 10 second ride down our little side street.  As you know, me being a worry wart would never have agreed to anything more than that. :)

First Toddler Time Group

We went to toddler time at Families First for the first time today.  We were half an hour late, possibly because we're used to going to babytime, which starts half an hour later.  In any case, they were just finishing up craft time when we arrived and the girls, who were able to join us,  had time to make a stained glass window type apple card.  Enzo roamed around playing with the toys and reuniting with a couple of buddies who also graduated from babytime not too long ago.  Ethan and Zuri were both there with their grandmothers.  After this was a quick circle/music time, which Enzo did not want to 'find a lap' for.  He did enjoy the songs though and really enjoyed that we got to go up to the indoor play area.

Enzo really wanted to ride this tricycle that was far too big for him, so I helped him hold onto the handles and rode him around.  He also really liked the three wheeled scooter.  At first when I tried to stand him up on it, though, he kept trying to sit on it like the other ride on toys.  He had a great time with that and didn't want me to stop driving him around.

After a while it was time to clean up and head back downstairs for snack and a story.  Enzo sat in a high 'chairy' at the table and had a few crackers and signed 'book' and pointed at the book that Parky was reading, "10 Apples Up On Top".  We all had a good time, hopefully next time we'll get there on time.

Lowes with Daddy

Zoë and Abby were pretty bummed when we weren't out of the house in time for kid's choir practice this morning.  It started back up last week, which we missed since we were visiting with Nonno Ernie.  After realizing there was just no way we were going to make it in time, I plunked down on the bed with Enzo and said we just weren't going at all today.  Yesterday was such a busy day with needing to be at one place by this time and another place by that time, etc. etc., though fun, I needed today to just chill out.  Not to mention all of the things that needed to be done here.

So, Daddy said that he would take Zoë and Abby to Lowes with him to order the windows for the house.  At first the girls were bummed that we weren't going to church, but when Daddy said that they could ride in the cool cart (which Enzo got to ride in last time we were there) they were waiting at the door ready to go with him.

When they got there they ended up not being able to ride in the cool cart but they tell me that they got to walk through the store and then 'run around the windows'.

Kate and Ryan's Wedding

It was a long, busy, exciting day for us today.  First, while Daddy and the girls did their Home Depot building, Enzo and I picked some things up at the store for Kate's wedding.  Next we dropped Daddy at home and the kids and I went to the wedding location to meet the rest of the wedding party.  We did a few last minute touches and then all headed back to Sarah's house to get ready.  Luckily in between getting the girls ready and doing other things, they were able to play in the play room so that kept them entertained.  Enzo on the other hand was quite interested in everything us ladies were doing.

Once everyone was ready we headed out back to the ceremony/reception site.  It was a beautiful location at the home of friends Kate's family.  Luckily there were tents set up and a 'barn' for the food area, as it was raining.  It ended up not being too cold though, which was nice since Kate, Sarah, and I were all in strapless dresses.  I had anticipated it being pretty chilly so I put thermal tops under the girls dresses.  They were so thrilled to be able to be flower girls again, even re-using the dresses from Matt and Caitlin's wedding.  Instead of actually throwing flowers, thier job was to hold Kate's train as she walked from the house through the grass and then on the way back out.  We had practiced at home with a blanket tied around my waist and they briefly practiced at Sarah's house after Kate put her dress on.  They were super excited to have this very important job.

After the ceremony was the receiving line and photos, which Zoë and Abby did really for.  By the end of the photo taking though they were ready to eat.  Auntie helped us get some food and drinks and we went up to the second level of the 'barn' and stood with Uncle Tommy, Liz, and Grampy to eat.  Enzo was happy to hang out eating a roll with Grampy holding him and I was happy too because that meant I could eat and help the girls with their stuff.

After the toasts and cake cutting, Zoë and Abby got special cupcakes with flowers (fake) on top that matched the wedding cake.  They stayed out of the way for the boquet toss, though they were pretty interested in watching Kate toss the flowers and in seeing who would catch them.  They got balloon animals and plenty of tasty food and time with Uncles, Aunt, Grampy as well as other doting adults.  Kate's mom Julia is always very sweet to them and helpful with the kids.  Enzo takes to her well and waves and reaches for her when we see her.  Zoë was stuck to Kate's side for a lot of the evening and I had to pull her away on several occasions so that all of Kate and Ryan's wedding photos don't have my little darling in them.  Finally it was time to get my tired kids home and boy were they out as soon as Daddy had their teeth brushed and ushered them to bed.

Home Depot - Fire House Bank

We had a tight schedule this morning but I still managed to get Abby and Zoë to Home Depot for the Fire House Bank building project.  Mommy dropped us off while she ran some errands.  They had a great time with this project.  It was a quick build.  They are getting more and more proficient with these tools.

Helping Hands

Zoë and Abby stayed home watching a movie with Daddy for the afternoon while Enzo and I went to Durham to help set up for Kate and Ryan's wedding tomorrow.  I brought the backpack and stroller for Enzo, so that I could actually be usefull.  There were times though that I let him down to walk around and he was pretty interested in all of the hub bub.  Towards the end of our time, while I was inflating a bounce house for the kids tent, Enzo was in the stroller quite done with eating crackers and being restrained.  Julia, Kate's mom, asked if she could take him out and he had a nice time with her while I finished up.  The sat and checked out a nearby tree, then they went and swung on a swing attached to another tree and meandered around until he was ready to come back to Mommy.

Kate's Bachelorette Evening

I would've called it a party but it didn't end up that way.  Amber, Reanna, Kate and I met at Sarah's house for some dinner and relaxation.  Kate decided to try her dress on again to make sure everything fit right.  It turned out that the shoes she bought for the dress were shorter than the shoes she originally tried the dress on with so it needed some taking up.  Luckily Amber is quite the seamstress.  Kate stood on a stool while Amber pinned up the under layer of the dress and then tacked up the lace top layer so that it didn't drag on the ground.  Meanwhile the rest of us helped where we could and followed Enzo around until it was time for me to get him into his jammies and put him in the wrap.  He didn't end up going to sleep, but he was cozier that way... not to mention contained.
