Shrimp All You Can Eat

Pedro suggested a place for dinner tonight that he'd eated at last time he was here.  So we packed up and walked along the beach until we found it, Canoa dos Camaroes (canoe of shrimps).  We got the rodizio, which is an all you can eat where they bring each type of dish in succession until you turn them away.  You can pass on dishes that you don't like, you can say you want just a scoop of this or more of something else.  Every dish incorporated shrimp in some way.  My favorites were the shrimp with penne and a cream sauce as well as a shrimp potato salad.  Abby and Zoë really liked these little deep fried shrimp (milanese - it's breaded almost like someone would do for a parmesan), which I will admit were pretty tasty.  There were lots and lots of different dishes brought out to us and every one was enjoyable (except one that I didn't care for but Chris and Pedro did).  It was a good choice for the chewing impared too, as everything was soft, a plus for Mommy.  For drinks I had a Sprite and the girls had coconut water with Daddy.  Per person the rodizio costs R$23.70 the total bill came to $89.21 = US$44.60.

On the walk back to the apartment we stopped at our favorite little self serve ice cream place.  Both of the girls got two different flavors and Chris and I got a dish with a few flavors as well.  We spent R$3.72 = US$1.86

The Art of cooking Oatmeal (Aveia em Flocos Quacker)

I looked up the cooking instructions for making oatmeal today.  We found some cheap oats at the store yesterday.

Retire do fogo e sirva quente.

In a pan, mix 1 cup (tea) of milk, 3 tablespoons (soup) of Oats in flakes and 1 scoop (soup) of sugar. Take the high fire, always stirring, for about 5 minutes or until the swelling porridge. Remove from fire and serve hot.

Thanks google, you saved another breakfast.

Papa Norm's Artwork

Here are a couple of pictures that Papa Norm did while waiting for us to wake up this morning.  He actually was just finishing up Abby and Zoë's when we came down.  When he started doing Enzo's, the girls were right there giving him advice on colors.  Abby and Zoë named Enzo's picture, "The Enzo Bus"

Messy Art

I taped down some opened up plastic bags onto the floor in the play area and then gave Abby and Zoë each a sheet of finger painting paper.  I had them de-robe and put on art shirts. (they had smocks over this, but being on the floor, the smocks just got in the way)  Next I set them up with all different kinds of paint brushes and squirt whichever color of paint they asked for, wherever they wanted it.  Things started out with careful brush strokes and thoughtful faces.  Then once they figured out that I didn't mind if they used their hands, they really went to town.  It's been quite a while since we've painted, so they were just really in to squishing and messing it all around and feeling the paint and watching the colors mix.  They didn't mind that both of their papers ended up looking like 'mud puddles'.

Post Card Making

Abby and Zoë wanted to learn a little about the post office and how mail works.  So, I gave them each two index cards and they drew Portsmouth scenery pictures on the blank side.  Then on the lined side they practiced addressing their post cards and writing on them.  Then we went to the post office and one of the ladies showed Abby and Zoë the sizing chart, their index post cards would be too small to send in the mail.  I had a card to send, and showed them the stamp.  The woman that helped told us a good time that we could come back, when it shouldn't be too busy, and she said she'd give the girls a little tour of how things work in the post office.

Floam Mess

We finally broke out the floam that Nonna sent a while ago.  I had put it out in the hallway by the stairs, where I've moved our other art supplies, and thought of trying it this evening.  The paper that came with it said that the compound may separate from the beads, and to simply squish it and mash it to get it back to its correct state (an almost dry, non-messy blob).  Well, this didn't happen.  Mommy sat their squishing and squashing, and squishing and squashing, only to be a big slimy neon yellow mess.  No matter how much I worked it, the stuff did not want to go back to its correct form.  As I was doing this, I was reading further down the package where it says not to get it on your face, your clothes, or this, or that and the other warnings listed.  I decided I should probably try to go wash this guck off of me.  Poor girls, by the time I was able to free myself from the "slime monster" status that the girls had given me, we didn't have time to break out anything else, like play-doh... good old play-doh.  We sat down in the book area and read "Make Way for Ducklings" before getting ready for bed instead.

Native Americans, Piligrims, and Cornucopias, Oh My

I spent some time looking at kids crafts of pilgrims and native American's, and then found some to draw and cut out for Abby and Zoë.  I showed the choices to the girls, and they chose Pilgrim ladies, and an 'Indian Woman', so once I had them drawn and cut out, Abby and Zoë set to work coloring them... and color them they did!  Once they were all done, we glued them to toilet paper rolls.

I also drew and cut out two cornucopia's, and then hole punched along the edges, so that Abby and Zoë could get some fine motor skill practice by lacing a piece of yarn around it.  After this was done, they glued pictures of fruits and vegetables to the front of it.

Thankful Turkeys

I combined a couple of different ideas I found online to make "Thankful Turkeys" with Abby and Zoë today.  First I traced around their feet on brown construction paper, then both girls chose three colors for me to trace their hands in.  Abby chose green, orange, and yellow.  Zoë chose red, orange, and yellow.  Next I drew eyes, a beak, and that red dangly thing (for the life of me I can't remember what it's called) on the heel side of the foot cut out and then the girls colored that in then we glued it to a toilet paper roll.  Next they chose which order they wanted their hand prints to go on the back of the tp roll for the feathers.  On the handprint "feathers" that were to be showing first, I had Abby and Zoë both tell me 10 things they were thankful for (one to write on each finger of their hand prints).  Zoë said; toys, baking, Mommy, Daddy, Sissy, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, being able to swim, and rainbows.  Abby said; swimming in the bath at home, having good food to eat, Grandparents, Uncles, Mommy, Daddy, Aunts, Sissy, that her body can exercise, and her bunny snuggly.  After this I helped Abby and Zoë glue the hands on how they wanted them to look (unfortunately some of Abby's "thankful thumbs" are hidden behind the turkey, but that's where she wanted them so that's fine with me.  Abby was very specific that she wanted all her hands to go sideways and none of them to point up.  For Zoë, as long as she was getting to glue them on, she wasn't too picky about where to place them.

Making Spiders

Abby and Zoë received a package from Caitlin with a fun craft. (as well as a couple of books)  There were styrofoam balls, glow-in-the-dark google eyes, as well as glitter glue and pipe cleaners in orange, black, and green.  Abby and Zoë had a blast making them.  Zoë used a couple of different colors for her spider body, then quickly moved on to attaching legs in all colors.  She chose to put the eyes right next to each other, in the "correct" position.  Abby spent a lot of time painting the entire ball with every color, having me refill her pallette several times.  Finally she was ready to move on to legs, and slightly cock-eyed eyes.  There were extra materials, so of course both of the girls are already begging to make friends for their spiders.  Thanks Caitlin!

Recovery Day Nine

I got a call this morning before everyone else was up, that Bethel school was hoping I could substitute today.  I told them that we were still in recovery mode, but I'd think about it.  When Abby and Zoë woke up, they gave me the answer... a big no.  They definitely needed some Mommy snuggles today.  They both perked up and spent some time coloring in their "magic coloring books" that Grandma Cindy had brought for them.  They had a good appetite again today, and are really making up for days of barely eating.  As we don't have a scale in the house, we have no idea how much weight they've lost, but are hopeful that they'll continue having these huge appetites, at least for a couple of more days, and put on whatever they lost.

Simpsons Style Family Portrait

Laura is always complaining about not getting family portraits made, so I put together this portrait.  Abby and Zoë both picked out their clothes and colors, shoes, shirt logos, go figure, both wanted donuts, and their hair styles.  I questioned the purple hair, but didn't want to limit their creativity.

Baker Man

We've been talking this week about chefs and bakers.  For the rest of the month we're going to be learning about different professions.  We got some fun books at the library yesterday and read a handful of them today, one was titled "I want to be a Chef", which talked about all of the different kinds of chefs and different dishes that can be made.

This evening Abby and Zoë colored the pieces to make a toilet paper roll baker man.  We'll finish putting him together tomorrow.

New Cameras

Zoë and Abby got their own digital cameras today.  They are Canon PowerShot cameras... the kind manufactured with items from our art box.

The Dora animal cracker boxes, that Auntie Elizabeth sent with the Easter goodies, really came in handy.  I covered the boxes in white paper, then cut a hole in the front and stuck a toilet paper roll tube in it, cut the tube to size and then papered it too.  I colored it with crayon and marker, trying to make it look like Daddy and Mommy's camera as much as possible, even drawing in the little buttons and words.  Of course Abby and Zoë's cameras are more like the first digital cameras... really bulky.  I used string on the side of the "camera" for the strap.  On one of the cameras I used a strap that I had for holding my sunglasses on, which works pretty well but of course since there weren't two, it caused some arguments.

Abby and Zoë love their new cameras and pretend to take pictures of everything, and then pretend that they can see the picture on the back viewing screen.  And they, of course, make this "chick, chick" noise every time they take a photo.

Scissor Mouths

This evening we got out some paper, the markers, and the scissors upon Abby's request.  She's been asking since this morning to color with markers, and then to cut with scissors.  We worked on the correct hold on the scissors and the correct way to put them on the paper to cut.  Also we had to learn about keeping our fingers far enough away from the "sharp" part.  Oh, and we talked about watching where the scissors were, and putting them down if hands were needed for something else, after Abby attempted to brush her hair away from her face, scissors in hand.

Once Abby and Zoë both got the hang of cutting, it was so funny to watch them work so intently.  First Abby was cutting, and Zoë was busy coloring on her paper.  Abby's mouth moved in time with the opening and closing of her scissors.  This was so funny, I kept trying to get Chris to catch it.  Next Zoë was ready to cut around her paper and she did the same thing.  I just sat there watching them both opening and closing their mouths as they moved their scissors, it was so funny.

Color Wonder Mayhem

We have these "mess free" finger paints by Crayola.  They are clear until they are put on special paper.  There's thing so that the kids know which color they are using.  The girls both know that they are supposed to rub their fingers on this stuff, and not dig their fingers into it (it's like a glue stick consistency, all smooshed together).

I had to take Zoë upstairs to the potty as she had started to have an accident. So, while I'm dealing with Zoë crying because she's no longer painting, I hear a big gasp from Chris downstairs. After some crying and hand washing, they marched upstairs to show Mommy what had been done... the finger paints are now almost non-existent. Chris said that when he looked over, he noticed that it looked like Abby had a very thick layer of lotion all over her hands... yeah, she got a little paint happy. It was a mess. Abby was crying because she knew we were upset and I was telling her to go to her room until Zoë was done on the potty. And Zoë was crying, while reprimanding Abby because now she really wasn't going to get to paint.

Once everyone calmed down, we made our way downstairs, where Abby and Zoë played dominoes... it seemed like a safe choice so close to bed time.

I see you have been busy growing and learning and experiencing new things. It looks like the dentist visit went well and the visit to Uncles Matt's seemed like a lot of fun.It seems that the painting was fun too until you used too much. Clay Fun

When Auntie Reanna came over today, we broke out the bucket of clay, that's been pretty much unused so far.  We started by just playing and squishing, but then Auntie started making berries, since this bucket has lots shades of colors it worked nicely.  We were talking about the book "Jamberry" while we were making these things.  The girls kept trying to confiscate the berries Reanna was making and squishing them in to their own pieces of clay.  I made two "waffles" to put all of the berries and bananas on and then Auntie made some "whipped cream" to go on top.  After we finished this, I headed in to the kitchen to make some dinner, while they stayed and made cereal and bowls to put it in.  They had quite a lot of fun making, what else, all sorts of foods.  (And yes, Zoë had "buns".  Cinnamon and Chocolate)

Gingerbread Paper Men

I cut open a brown paper grocery bag and traced a large gingerbread man for each of the girls to paint.  They each got to choose two colors, besides the brown and white I had put out on their plates.  Zoë chose pink and red, while Abby chose orange and red.  We looked at some pictures of gingerbread men cookies and then they set out to work painting away.  They had a great time doing the "buttons" and "icing", even though all of the colors are mixed together in the end, that's what they said they were painting.
