Potty Poo Number Two
That's right, Enzo pooped on the potty for the second time! Enzo was nursing and told me he needed to poop (or that he was pooping, he says/signs both in the same way) so I asked him about it but he continued nursing. After just a moment he again told me, "poop" so I talked up the potty and got him on it, with no protests from him. When I was taking his diaper off I noticed that he had just started to go a bit, so I hurried with having him sit and then tried to keep him occupied while he finished up. He got this out of the way nice and early, Daddy wasn't even up yet (possibly why there were no protests for Daddy to sit with him on the potty instead of me).
He and I went up to wave good-bye to the poo and tell Daddy all about it. There was lots of clapping and high fives.

See You Later
Enzo just learned to sign "see you later" and it is so cute! You can go
here to see the actual way to sign it (though it's a very slow example for those learning the language, it's a more fluid sign). Enzo does more of a chicken wing and wrist twist combonation while attempting to say the phrase. "Table" and "dirty" are two other newer signs he's been doing a lot lately.
We're working with him now on signing two or three word sentences. Whereas the girls singed in sentences seemingly from the start, Enzo prefers a more short and to the point approach such as just signing "more" or "milk" or "please".
Another cute thing he's started doing, though not sign language it is sort of related because it's a gesture, is shrugging his shoulders, putting up his hands and saying "I don't know" in his cutie little toddler way. If he is wanting something and doesn't know where it's at he'll come up to us and do this. It never gets old.

Indoor Slide
Well, we did indeed bring up the little fisher price slide and Enzo loves it. It only took him a few time with Daddy working with him to use his feet on the steps instead of his knees and then working the sitting with his feet in front of him, but he got it down and doesn't want to stop! He definitely needs closely spotted, but he'll sit at the top and say 'go, go, go' - thanks to Abby and Zoë, who sit nearby waiting for a turn, saying "Go, Enzo. Go, Enzo!" It's like he has to have a cheering squad now to go down the slide, and he always makes sure that If I'm assisting him on the slide, Chris is watching to cheer him on. He'll even stop climbing up the steps, walk around to the slide and look in Chris' direction as he puts his feet over as if he's going to climb the slide - knowing that Chris will remind him to go around and use the stairs... and then clap for him because he did it correctly.

Enzo's Potty Interest
Enzo is officially very interested in the potty. After going pee in the 'big toilet' a couple of times a little over a month ago, his interest waned and sometimes he just plain refused to sit, so I let it go. Recently, at Reanna's while I was using the bathroom, Enzo wanted to sit on the potty that we got Elijah for his birthday. Since then we've made efforts to sit him with his diaper off so that he gets it. Also, whenever he's in the bathroom when one of us are going, we make sure to say all of those key words to hope to trigger.
Just in the past couple of days he's shown that he knows what we're talking about when we say someone is going to use the potty or has to pee (or poop for that matter) and he races for the bathroom. For a while I've shown Enzo the sign and said 'poop' when I can tell that he's going as well. I just brought the little potty down from storage and whenever it's time for Enzo to have a diaper change, I help him to sit on 'his' potty before putting the new diaper on. Sometimes just when I'm using the bathroom I'll pull down his britches if he wants to sit too. Who knows if this is any indication that he'll potty train 'early' but I'm glad that he at least is interested in it and hope that we can keep his experiences with toilet usage positive.

Second Pee on the Potty
Enzo amazed us yet again with another pee on the potty. It was about time for him to get a diaper change anyhow so I just took off his dipe and sat him on the potty. I asked him if he needed to go and made some tinkle sounds and he went! I shouted down to Chris to tell him the news right away. I was shocked! Even though he's still at least a few months away from having the physical ability to control his potty needs, we'll just keep sitting him on the potty once or so a day to continue giving him the positive image of the toilet.

Enzo's First Pee in the Potty
After Enzo woke up from nap, while at Reanna's I was ready to change his diaper and decided to sit him on the potty, as I often do after nap (or anytime I think he may be about to go while I'm changing him) just to get him used to it. This time, after just a couple of seconds of sitting and me saying the potty 'trigger words' he began peeing! I called Chris to get the camera and we clapped and said the typical parent things and then he went some more! Good day for a first pee on the potty I guess!

The End of the Pacifiers
We think... Enzo's never really been super reliant on the paci, not nearly as much as the girls were. It even took him a long time before he fully accepted one. It has been a big help when he's upset in the car, and also to get him to sleep. But even then, he'd always spit it out once he was slumbering soundly.
It's been a while since he's actually accepted the paci, lately it seems to be just making him more upset. Like when Chris had him the other night and tried offering an upset Enzo the paci, Enzo got even more upset. So, today I gathered up all of the paci's (you know there's one for the playpen, bedroom, on the go, extra here, extra there) and put them away in the closet. We'll keep them around for another month, just in case, but it does look like this may be the end of the paci for Enzo.
It's interesting because the girls were three months over 2 years old when we got rid of theirs, and then it was a big process. Also, they had put theirs in baggies and 'recycled' them. I remember that then they'd had an interest in the recycling process and I'd told them when they put them in the recycling bin that they'd be recycling them for a new baby. (Of course I went back and took them out when the girls weren't looking) It took a few years, but they really did get recycled for a new baby - their own baby brother. Little did I know, right?

Pulling Up and Cruising
Enzo just doesn't give us a break! He's pulling up on anything and everything, anything a little higher than himself so that he can at least stand on his legs, even if he has to be bent in half with his upper body folded forward. He's really quite proficient at pulling up, but doesn't always make the best choices as to what he's pulling up on (the rocking ottoman, stroller, canned goods, etc.) and he's still in the stage that he needs to have a spotter right there just in case. He's even begun cruising a little bit, which I just can't believe he's doing already. He is most steady doing this at the couch and can get himself right along it without falling. He just loves this new talent so much, he doesn't like to stay put in his exersaucer or the like for long and whines to get down and get into trouble crawl around.

Enzo Crawled!
And of course I didn't have the camera with me. It was this morning while I was at the parent re-charge group. I had him on the (carpeted) floor with his toys a little away from the table. The table had been covered with paper for our craft project and some was hanging off the side. He got himself onto his hands and knees and did actual hands and knees crawling all the way over to it! I was so excited I exclaimed, "He's crawling!" and got out of my seat to cheer him on. Then I promptly felt my face grow hot (and red I'm sure) because everyone else was oohing and aaahing too. After that he resorted mostly to belly crawling again, but here and there he'd do a pace or two on hands and knees.
Back at home I excitedly told Chris about it, who was bummed that he'd missed it. Not to worry though, Enzo did a repeat performance right before Daddy's eyes. Zoë was so excited upon seeing him that she came over and said to Abby, "Sissy look! Do you see him crawling?!"

Pre-Crawling Progress
All of the sudden Enzo is getting himself fully up onto his hands and knees many times throughout the day, where before he couldn't quite get his knees all the way under himself if his arms were straight, only if he was on his forearms. It's funny how instinctual it is for babies to rock back and forth once they get into that position, and rock he does, sometimes launching himself a little. Doing the 'army crawl' is still his preferred method of getting himself to where he wants to go, usually to the edge of his mat to rip it up and chew on it - yes, we do a lot of redirecting already.

Dinner Help
Zoë and Abby got some new more 'grown-up' jobs tonight when helping with dinner. We made two pizzas. For the first one Abby sliced the olives (with a serrated plastic 'picnic' knife) while Zoë put on the sauce, mushrooms, and the olives. (I did the shredding of the mozzarella over the pizza this evening) For the second pizza Abby got to stand at the stove and stir up the onions to carmelize them. I was a little unsure of giving her this job but I showed her what to do and stood with her while she did it at first, then I just kept a close eye on her. She did really well. Once the onions were getting really close to being done, I took over so that they didn't burn. While Abby was doing this, Zoë was having her turn slicing the olives.
Both of the girls were so proud to have done these new jobs and were extra excited to try the pizzas. For me, it's nice for them to be doing things that actually does save me time now.

First Solid Food Feeding
Enzo had his first try of rice cereal this morning... and I didn't make enough! I had been adamant that I wouldn't start him until 6 months old, so much so that I guess I didn't see just how ready he was. After reading so many times the advice to go by what he can do rather than his age, I checked that he was able to do all of the recommended things and he can and has been able to. So, I waited for him to not be quite so run down with his cold and we began.
I just started with a teaspoon of the brown rice cereal, thinned down with breastmilk. On my gut feelings with some of what Enzo's been doing with his mouth lately, I didn't make it quite so runny. It was runny mind you, but not so much that it was liquid. From the very start, he wanted to work the spoon and touch the food, so I let him. At first he wasn't doing anything with the food once it got in his mouth (it didn't seem to phase him when I put it on his lips, he just kept grabbing the spoon to shove in his mouth) and I thought maybe he just wasn't ready yet. But then I realized that the spoon wasn't getting far enough in his mouth as he'd grab the food part and not the handle and the food was staying in front of his tongue. After a few tries, he then grabbed further back on the spoon and he got the food on his tongue and worked his mouth perfectly to swallow the food. Once he got this figured out, I couldn't get more food on the spoon quickly enough and then I felt so bad when I ran out and he was reaching for more, I still feel completely awful about it! Abby said to me, "I told you that you needed more food than that." Yes, tomorrow we'll start with a bit more.

Sitting
Enzo is already sitting up! He still uses his hands to balance himself and prop himself up most of the time, and he still has to be surrounded on all sides for tipping purposes, but he can sit for a long time all by himself! He seems to get a kick out of sitting up and looking around, especially when his sisters are nearby to look at. We just have to make sure it's not right after eating, because the tripod position seems to aid in spit up.

Zoë Learns to Tie a Bow
Zoë just mastered tying bows! I'm super proud of her. We haven't had a lot of practice since they've spent so long in non-laced shoes. But just a couple of days ago we practiced a few times on the fancy dresses of their dolls and today we brought down a pair of shoes that were being stored. They have laces and I mentioned that these shoes would be good so that the girls could practice tying bows more. Both girls set to work and after trying and trying, Zoë got it! She did it again and again, perfecting her bows and was so proud of herself. Abby was getting discouraged and asked Zoë to come over and show her how.
When showing the girls, I made sure to sit across from Zoë as was recommended in a book I once read about raising left handed children. With Abby I had her sit in front of me, facing the same direction.

Two in a Row
Enzo slept all night again, and this time for even longer! He went to sleep at 9:30 p.m. last night and didn't wake until 6:15 this morning! I went to bed right when he did and then I awoke at a quarter to five. I thought surely it was the middle of the night, but wasn't sure why I had woken up so I checked the time. Enzo spent a while stirring with a stuffy nose, and a couple of times I thought he'd wake up, but just after I finally let myself get back to sleep, he woke up for good. I'm still trying not to get my hopes up that this will happen all of the time, but it would sure be nice!

Through the Night
Enzo slept for 7 and a half hours straight! Wow, I was so surprised. Not because I didn't think he was able or ready, with his age and size I knew he was very capable, but the longest stretch we've had was five hours but usually it's more like four. I changed his diaper at about 8:30 at night and fed him, then he was awake a bit and ate some more. He was out for good around 9:30 p.m. Chris and I got to sleep probably an hour (maybe a little less) later. He didn't wake up until 5:00a.m.
My first clue that he'd slept a longer than usual stretch was that I awoke to some little noises in the room and felt more awake than is normal for a middle of the night feeding. I lay there for a little while wondering why I couldn't get back to sleep and then checked the clock to see the time. (My second clue was how 'full' I was!) Enzo was having a difficult time with his nose at this point, but I could tell that he was fighting waking up and he kept trying to go back to sleep, so if it wasn't for a stuffy nose he would have slept longer. Now, I'm not getting my hopes up for this to be the norm, though it would be fantastic, because I know that the first time a baby sleeps this long means the start of longer sleeping, but it can be a while before you see some consistent long stretches. I'll take it when I can get it though!

Front to Back
Enzo rolled over! At his check-up the doctor said that she wouldn't be surprised if he did this soon as he is so active. I helped him to roll over a couple of times during tummy time earlier in the day, then this evening I put him in the playpen bassinet on his belly with a travel pillow under his chest. He rolled over off of it onto his back, but I thought it was a fluke. I put him back and he did it again so then I took the pillow away and he did it in the bassinet all on his own. I righted him and then he went right over again! Abby ran out to the hallway to have Daddy come up saying, "Daddy, get your buns up here". While we were waiting for Daddy, Enzo began to get fussy so I picked him up. Once Chris got upstairs I said that he was probably too fussy to show off but put him down on his belly anyway and over he went, with us all leaning over the playpen applauding his achievement.

Humongous Enzo
Enzo is putting on his winter weight. He must be anticipating our return to a colder climate as he is seemingly gaining weight quickly or
he is just living up to his name meaning "Giant". We haven't had another follow up appointment for him here, as we have one scheduled when we return to New Hampshire and want his vaccinations and documentation to all be in one place. We took advantage of the pharmacies scale to weigh Enzo by process of elimination. We first weight Laura and Enzo both together for 60.7 kg = 133.82 lbs. Then I took Enzo from Laura and she only weighed 56.1 kg = 123.67 lbs. This means that Enzo was 4.6 kg = 10.14 lbs. Enzo was slightly dressed in a onesie and pants, and possibly a full diaper. But in any case, in the past 3 weeks, he has grown from initial birth weight of 3.56 kg = 7.84 lbs. to 4.6 kg = 10.14 lbs., which is a gain of 1.04 kg = 2.3 lbs. I missed the chance to weigh myself, but I am sure I have continued my weight loss program. Abby weighed 15.1 kg = 33.28 lbs. and Zoë weighed 14.8 kg = 32.62 lbs. This is the one of the largest differences they have had in weight in a long time, about a half a pound.
Enzo is a good eater and I can see how he is gaining weight as he constantly feeds. Laura has also lost almost all of her pregnancy weight during this time period as well, and even without trying as our diet here has been mostly cookies and sugar.

Yes, Enzo's diaper was definitely full, when isn't it completely full? However, even if we gave a whole pound to the wet diaper, he is still over 9 pounds, which is a big gain. Newborns usually lose weight their first week outside the womb, then slowly start to gain again and by two weeks are expected to be back at their birth weight. Newborns then gain an average of two thirds of an ounce per day. Apparently Enzo is aiming to be an above average kind of baby. I think it may just have something to do with the fact that he's always eating, in this hot climate he just can't seem to get enough.
