Truly Enjoyable

There have been many stages and phases that have proven very difficult for me since Abby and Zoë turned three.  Today, however, I just really really enjoyed my girls.  They had such good behavior today, they were kind, thoughtful, and pretty respectful.  We went to the store this afternoon and they were both just so well behaved and listened so well.  After having a snack in the carts, Abby got out.  Zoë happily sat in the back of Chris' cart for the entire shopping trip, until getting in the seat at the end.  When Abby got out and we started walking towards the food aisles, she grabbed right on to my back pocket, completely unprompted.  I didn't have to remind her to stay close or settle down, and then once we got to the produce and check-outs, both girls got to have their Dora lollipops in the seats.

Back at home, the girls played well together (for the most part anyway) while I did the dishes after dinner.  Then a big headache hit Mommy and I wasn't able to read to them while they had night time snack like I'd said I would.  They were disappointed but once they got down it was so sweet to see how considerate they were being of my condition - especially Zoë.  She tried so hard to use a whisper voice, remembering to go in the other room to say something to Daddy, who was making me a coffee with Abby (hoping the caffeine would help) instead of hollering from the living room, then she kept coming in to check on me in hushed tones, and even gave me her pony to rest my head on.  Daddy brushed teeth before bed and by then my head was feeling a little better so the girls and I snuggled up to read together.  Our Bible story was about the magi going to visit Jesus and bringing gifts, so this spurred a discussion about Christmas and Santa and all of those explanations of things to do with the holiday.  After this we read Charlotte's web.  I just loved having the girls sitting comfortably together in between my legs, leaning against my chest, listening and looking at the pages intently, even though most of the pages are just words.  It was truly a very enjoyable day of good behavior and sweet moments.  (Of course as I'm finishing writing this, it's bed time and three warnings have already been given for too much talking - but it's so much easier to deal with when the rest of the day went smoothly)

Trick-or-Treating in Dover

We went to Dover to trick-or-treat in Uncle Corey and Auntie Reanna's neighborhood again this year.  When we got to their house, Reanna wasn't home from work yet, but Corey and Uncle Tommy were there, as well as a handfull of people from their church.  When we walked in, a little girl named Riley, who was dressed up as Ariel, greeted us.  We also saw her little brother, who was in a flounder costume.  I got Abby and Zoë something to eat and then all dressed up in their costumes, complete with thermals underneath.

Auntie Reanna arrived home and changed as well, then the group of trick-or-treaters headed off.  Uncle Corey, Uncle Tommy, and Daddy stayed behind to pass out candy.  Not long into our adventure, two of the ladies Reanna teaches with caught up with us, one being Amanda, who has the twins Kally and Emma.  There had been a dress up thing at the center in which all of the classroom teachers dressed up to a theme.  Amanda had her Eeyore costume on, Caitlyn was Pooh bear, Kally was Tigger and Emma was Piglet, quite the cute bunch.

While walking around, Abby and Zoë wanted anyone's hand but mine it seemed.  First they had Auntie Reanna, sometimes Hillary, who was dressed up as Princess Buttercup (although the girls thought she was Fiona).  Houses with just a short walkway or a couple of steps I let the girls go up while we stood at the bottom of the steps.  If there were more steps then we'd go ahead and go up with them.  They were brave and had no problems with saying their "Trick-or Treat" or 'Thank-you's'

After a while I had to cut the girls off and tell them that it was time to go back to the house.  Most of the the others in the group were going to continue going around, but Amanda, Caitlyn and the girls were going to head back as well, so that made it easier on Abby and Zoë.  Auntie Reanna also told them that she'd keep their buckets and fill them with more candy as she continued on with the group.  Zoë went and grabbed Caitlyn's hand and as we were walking Abby said to me, "I don't have anyone's hand!" When informed that she was indeed holding a hand, mine, she still wasn't satisfied.  She got Amanda's hand and then was content to finsish walking back to the house.  When we got back, Uncle Tommy was in charge of the candy bowl, and the girls "tricked" him into giving them a treat.  We went inside and each of the girls were allowed to have one resees.

It wasn't too long before the rest of the group arrived back and Reanna showed Abby and Zoë all she'd collected for them.  Pretty soon it was time for teeth brushing, pj's and heading home.  Once at home, the girls got to dump their buckets out on the floor and check out all of their treats.  There was only a small amount that we had to trash and then Chris let them each choose a candy they wanted to set aside to enjoy tomorrow.

Dinner at Corey and Reanna's

It's been a while since we went over to Reanna and Corey's house, so we decided to have a Sunday dinner with them today.  We actually arrived to their house before they did, which Abby and Zoë thought was funny.  They didn't mind waiting, as they pulled out some books, played with legos, and ate some of Reanna's tasty cereal.

Abby was miss helper in the kitchen this evening.  She helped stir the black beans and diced tomatoes and garlic together in the pot before Reanna turned the stove on.  Then she helped grate some cheese and tear the lettuce.  Abby  kind of had an attitude of 'know-it-all', which was funny to watch.  She just exuded this confidence and self-assurance with what she was doing.  She was firm in her position of kitchen helper... Zoë chose to hang out with Uncle Corey, who was reading her books.  She tried to come into the kitchen a couple of times, and one time actually succeeded in pulling up a chair and helping with a task, but it was short lived and she was back to the books in no time.  Although, both girls did get to equally share the job of setting the table.

The girls enjoyed our burritos, and especially the lime flavored tortilla chips that we had along with it.  We all enjoyed the 'haystacks' (with added small pretzel sticks) that Reanna had made for her Sunday school class but forgot to bring.  After dinner the girls were big helpers again, with clearing the table, and then they got teeth brushed and jammies on... Auntie Reanna of course had to be the helper of these tasks.  Both of the girls were bummed that we couldn't spend the night, but I were consoled by the fact that we plan to go back Tuesday for trick-or-treating!

Recovery: One Month

The time seems to have flown by, it's already been a month since Abby and Zoë had their surgeries.  In that short window of time between their throats being pretty much healed and getting this persistent cold, we really did notice a difference... especially with sleeping.

Unfortunately there is this virus we're dealing with.  I'm actually wondering if Zoë has croup or even whooping cough.  I'm actually leaning towards whooping cough due to her symptoms and the way things have progressed, even though she's up to date on her immunizations... it wouldn't be the first time I've heard of an immunized kid getting get.  I'm going to call the pediatricians office to talk to a dr. or nurse tomorrow if things don't improve.

Abby Sounds it Out

Abby was drawing pictures today and she brought one to me that she said was her on the beach with the sand, sunshine, sky, and ocean.  It was clear to see the picture, then I noticed letters at the top: "MooMeee"  I asked Abby to explain those to me and she said that she wrote "Mommy" and then sounded out her attempt... it was very cute to get a glimpse at her thought process.

Vicks Does the Trick

Actually, it was the store brand 'medicated chest rub', but it worked all the same.  The girls are both having coughing, worse at night of course.  Zoë's is sounding bad, so we finally did our Wal-Mart shop for the week and picked some of this up.  I've never been a fan of "cough syrup" or things of the sort, and voted only to use them at night along with trying other "natural" remedies.  With all of the new research out about these things being ineffective and even dangerous for kids under six years old, it's just reiterated trying out things that are more natural remedies.  It has also brought out some new ideas from different internet sources.  That being said, I came upon a tip to put the vapor rub on the feet and then put socks on and it was supposed to significantly reduce, if not eliminate night time coughs.  I tried it for nap, and it really did work!

Back to the Doctor

Abby is still having cold symptoms, a low grade fever, and was complaining so much this morning about her legs hurting.  I decided to call the Doctor's office again and they had us come on in.  We all went this time, and Zoë got a quick check at the end as well.  Again, we were told that it's a virus and if the fever stays around 99 or 100 degrees to not treat it.  We also got a prescription for some acetemetophen with codein to help sleeping at night.  Surprise, surprise, Zoë is in the early stages of whatever Abby has.

Planet Confusion

This evening we had some discussions about planets that had me laughing so hard.  You see, Daddy had tooted and Abby excused him, and in turn he took the opportunity to blame it on Abby... coming from a certain part of her body.  After this he told her, "Abby, did you know that there is a planet called Uranus?" to which she replied, "No, Daddy.  It's your anus!"  He continued trying to explain to her about the different planets, ours planet being Earth, and how one of the planets is named Uranus.  Every time he said this planet name she would reply, in all seriousness, "No Daddy, it's your anus!"

Sunday Walk-Abouts

It was unseasonably warm today and this morning Chris and I took Abby and Zoë to the playground and to run around the nature trail a little.  Even though Abby didn't really want to run so much, as her legs have been hurting her.  This afternoon we took a walk (with Abby in the stroller) into town and found something to eat for dinner and then on the way home we picked up a few treats to enjoy dessert together at home.

Hand Blender Heaven

When I was at the resale shop, I saw this hand blender "baby set" for only $7.99.  We had been wanting a hand blender for a while now, and though we didn't need some of the things that came in the set, we'd use the hand blender and chopper attachment and it was not even $8.00!  Since then we've been blending fruit drinks left and right.  Every morning I try something new.  I made the girls a banana soy milk smoothie and put it in cups that we'd saved from some restaurant or another.  Zoë asked, "Did you go to a restaurant in the middle of the night?"  I also made an orange, pineapple, banana, and pear juice which was tasty.  Chris made some cashew nut butter with the chopper attachment that Abby and Zoë enjoyed with some honey on crackers.  We're really getting some nice use out of this.

More Princess Dresses

Yesterday after nap, I took Abby to the resale store and let her pick a princess dress, since her and Zoë are continually arguing over the only "fancy, poofy" dress they have.  There were some fancy cinderella, snow white, and aurora dresses, but those were much too spendy, especially for 2nd hand.  Then we saw a plain snow white dress and an Aurora (sleeping beauty) dress for $7.00 and $8.00.  Abby tried both on and decided on the Aurora dress.

Today there were still arguments, and I was going back to the store to pick up this cool hand blender set I'd seen for a great price ($8.00) so Chris told me to bring Zoë along and let her get the cheap snow white dress.  Zoë caught sight of the "fancy" snow white dress, but was fine with the explanation that that one was too much money and was very happy to get the one we picked out.  She even told the cashier that there was another snow white dress, but it was "too much".

A Doctor's Office Visit for Abby

Abby awoke a little before dawn upset and with a fever around 100 degrees F.  I gave her some tylenol and she went back to sleep.  When Zoë woke up this morning, Abby still didn't want to get up.  At 9:30 she was awake, but still in bed.  I checked her temp. and again it was around 100 degrees.  I gave her more tylenol and then an hour later her temperature had gone up to 101 degrees + and she was complaining that her forehead hurt and her legs hurt, so I called the doctor's office, who said to bring her in.

The doctor said that she felt a little bit of lymph node and Abby's throat was red, and they hadn't had many young kids in with the flu so she wanted to take a strep culture.  I asked about the possibility of it being a staph infection and she said that even though she didn't think it was likely, she'd do a regular throat culture to check for both.  Abby was very upset about the culture and the woman felt very bad, so she offered to get Abby a popsicle and asked which flavor.  Abby didn't answer, so I probed her to choose a flavor and Abby said "I want her to surprise me."  Abby was happy after she received her pink flavor ice. The doctor wanted to put Abby on some antibiotics until the results came back, but I opted to hold off since she was just on them not too long ago and we don't even know if she has a virus or what's going on with her.   Abby and I dropped the the culture at the lab downstairs and headed home for some rest.   The culture will take 48 hours, since that will be this weekend, we probably won't know until Monday.

Tonight, while eating dinner, Abby got very upset and I felt her and she felt super hot.  We took her temperature and she was around 103 degrees.  I called in to have the dr. on call give us a call and luckily it was Dr. Lamm, who is always very helpful.  We gave Abby some ibuprofen and both girls a lukewarm bath and by bed time Abby was feeling cooler.

Active Dreamers

Both Abby and Zoë had such an active sleep last night.  Abby was talking in her sleep... a lot!  Many different times we heard her, mostly about Cinderella and other fairy tales.  At one point Zoë started fitting and kicking at her blankets and started shouting, "Get off!  No, no, Get off!"  Chris gave her a calming "shh, shh, shh" and she shouted "No, I don't want you!"  This repeated a few times, and I began thinking that maybe she was actually talking to him, but we figured out that she was indeed just dreaming.  I ended up having to get up and calm her back to a peaceful sleep.

At one point Abby began singing in her sleep.  Chris looked over the side of the bed just in time to see her lift her head and swing it from side to side as she sang, "Once upon a dream, once upon a dream!" it was so funny and I was laughing so hard I thought I'd wake her up.

Library Story Time

Zoë and Abby were so thrilled to be joining in on library story time today, it's been so long.  They were very excited to see Ms. Mary as well.  It was a very small group today, but we did see Skylar and Paige, who came with their 'Nana'.  Zoë was especially excited because today's theme was about dogs and there was a big felt board for "Dog's Colorful Day", in which everyone got to take turns putting on their felt circle in different colors.  Ms. Mary had also brought a large dog puppet.  At the end all of the kids got to make paper bag dog puppets (like the ones we made at Abby and Zoë's third birthday party)

Just Some Errands

We did some school stuff this morning, working with introducing middle sounds in words, and we also had lots of reading time and fun play time.  Both of the girls woke up very cranky from nap and by the time we got things together we didn't have time to walk to do the errands we needed to run, so we took the car.  Finally, while out on the errands Abby and Zoë got in better moods.  They were happy that they got to go into the library, even though they spent their time helping look for movies for Mommy and Daddy.

Last Day with Grandma Cindy

Grandma Cindy spent the night on Sunday and had most of the day today to spend with us.  Abby and Zoë finally got Grandma Cindy to play candy land with them, as well as plenty of other things that kept them busy this morning.  This afternoon we went to Wal-Mart and then went through the Taco Bell drive through for some food to take home for dinner.  Auntie Reanna arrived to pick Grandma Cindy up just after we got home.  Abby and Zoë had asked Grandma Cindy if they'd be able to play with her for a little bit before she left, and when they ended up not being able to, they were pretty upset.  This, of course, made it harder for Grandma Cindy to say good-bye, but she managed to hold it together through hugs and kisses.

The Writing on the Wall

Abby came into the kitchen today and says, "Mom, I'm sorry I wrote on the wall with the crayon."  I was setting up for a fuming talk of how I should be able to trust her to color in the other room by now, but then I approached the said wall, saw her perfect 'e's' and 'a's', took a deep breath and told her how great her letters came out.  Then I explained that she needs to come and ask me for blank paper if she doesn't want to draw in the coloring book.  This was our first wall writing experience and I was just shocked that she'd actually written on the wall.  Thanks to the 'magic eraser', our wall is as good as new.

Fill A Bag Sale

As soon as we were done at the farmer's market, I went over to the re-sale shop for their sale.  I made out this time.  I got two bags, when I normally stick to just one, but I just couldn't pass up the things I needed a second bag for.  Here's what I got for $10:
1 bikini
4 fleece tops (2 pull-over microfleece and 2 zip up with hoods)
2 sets (tops and bottoms) of thermals
2 turtlenecks
3 sweaters (two with turtlenecks, one button down) and one sweater vest type shirt, which we actually have the same one in a different color of already.
2 pairs of pajamas (one feetsie and one disney princesses top and bottom set)
2 pairs of pants (one cords, one jeans)
3 pairs of printed leggings
1 pair of lined pants that I'm hoping will work as snow pants
AND, the big scores were 2 fall/winter coats!  One ended up being really big on the girls, but we'll just make it work.

The majority of the clothes were Children's Place Brand, some were Osh Kosh, and the rest were no name brands.  I really felt like I got a lot of much needed items for a great price.

Funny Ideas

The other day, as we were getting ready to leave the library with Grandma Cindy, Zoe asked us "How does a Mommy and Daddy make a baby?"  Well, I thought I had a little longer before she asked me that exact question, but I've always tried to just explain things appropriately for her age, but with the correct information, so I began trying to figure out how to word the answer, but by the time I got to "God makes Mommy's and Daddy's very special so that..."  she was on to something else.  I guess I'll figure out how to finish the conversation for when she inevitably remembers she asked me this question.

Today while Abby was out with Chris, he asked her if she knew where money comes from.  Of course she did, "From the machine" , she answered.  Daddy asked what would happen if there wasn't any more in there and she said that she had some in her fishy purse.  Daddy asked about when that runs out and she told him that we'd just make it at home.  Then he had the discussion with her about how Daddy has to work and when he does that someone pays him and that the bank just holds our money for us like a big fishy purse, and all of those financial things.

Wow!!  good answers!!

The Big Switch to Booster Seats

This came as a surprise to us, as I thought we had a while before we had to make the switch.  There had been a recall for a part on our car seats, just a part that adjusts the harness straps, which seemed fine on ours, but they were part of the recall so... the replacement parts came the other day and I brought the seats in the house to fix them.  While I was doing this I got the manual for the seats out to check on the height requirements for the different positions, more so to check on the rear-facing because the other day after arriving home from a drive Zoe says to me, "Mom, I don't want to look at your heads anymore, can you turn me back around?"  I told her that wasn't an option anymore, but thought I'd check just to make sure anyway.  Turned out that, not only are they too tall to be rear facing for our seats, they are also almost too tall to be using them like we are with the harness straps.  I was so shocked, I had Chris measure the girls, sure that they weren't at this stage yet.  I just wasn't prepared for this.

The girls measured at 39 inches, the manual said "When your child is over 40 pounds or over 40 inches you must begin using this seat as a belt positioning booster."  The weight that it says is enough to begin using it this way is 30 pounds, the girls barely meet that requirement.  I knew that they always outgrew these standards for height way before weight, but they just seem so small still.  I took Abby and a seat out to the car and tried it out with the car seat belt and, sure enough, she was in with the seat belt tight and in all of the correct positions and she and the seat were very secure.  I procrastinated a little on finishing the job of taking all of the harness straps out and putting the seats back in for use as boosters, but finally got to it and this afternoon Abby took her first booster seat ride.  Chris was just going to go to the post office himself quickly, but Abby insisted on going with him and when she got back she told me all about her first booster seat ride in such a grown up way... like, "yeah mom, this is the way it is now."
