Planet Confusion

This evening we had some discussions about planets that had me laughing so hard.  You see, Daddy had tooted and Abby excused him, and in turn he took the opportunity to blame it on Abby... coming from a certain part of her body.  After this he told her, "Abby, did you know that there is a planet called Uranus?" to which she replied, "No, Daddy.  It's your anus!"  He continued trying to explain to her about the different planets, ours planet being Earth, and how one of the planets is named Uranus.  Every time he said this planet name she would reply, in all seriousness, "No Daddy, it's your anus!"

Sunday Walk-Abouts

It was unseasonably warm today and this morning Chris and I took Abby and Zoë to the playground and to run around the nature trail a little.  Even though Abby didn't really want to run so much, as her legs have been hurting her.  This afternoon we took a walk (with Abby in the stroller) into town and found something to eat for dinner and then on the way home we picked up a few treats to enjoy dessert together at home.

Hand Blender Heaven

When I was at the resale shop, I saw this hand blender "baby set" for only $7.99.  We had been wanting a hand blender for a while now, and though we didn't need some of the things that came in the set, we'd use the hand blender and chopper attachment and it was not even $8.00!  Since then we've been blending fruit drinks left and right.  Every morning I try something new.  I made the girls a banana soy milk smoothie and put it in cups that we'd saved from some restaurant or another.  Zoë asked, "Did you go to a restaurant in the middle of the night?"  I also made an orange, pineapple, banana, and pear juice which was tasty.  Chris made some cashew nut butter with the chopper attachment that Abby and Zoë enjoyed with some honey on crackers.  We're really getting some nice use out of this.

More Princess Dresses

Yesterday after nap, I took Abby to the resale store and let her pick a princess dress, since her and Zoë are continually arguing over the only "fancy, poofy" dress they have.  There were some fancy cinderella, snow white, and aurora dresses, but those were much too spendy, especially for 2nd hand.  Then we saw a plain snow white dress and an Aurora (sleeping beauty) dress for $7.00 and $8.00.  Abby tried both on and decided on the Aurora dress.

Today there were still arguments, and I was going back to the store to pick up this cool hand blender set I'd seen for a great price ($8.00) so Chris told me to bring Zoë along and let her get the cheap snow white dress.  Zoë caught sight of the "fancy" snow white dress, but was fine with the explanation that that one was too much money and was very happy to get the one we picked out.  She even told the cashier that there was another snow white dress, but it was "too much".

A Doctor's Office Visit for Abby

Abby awoke a little before dawn upset and with a fever around 100 degrees F.  I gave her some tylenol and she went back to sleep.  When Zoë woke up this morning, Abby still didn't want to get up.  At 9:30 she was awake, but still in bed.  I checked her temp. and again it was around 100 degrees.  I gave her more tylenol and then an hour later her temperature had gone up to 101 degrees + and she was complaining that her forehead hurt and her legs hurt, so I called the doctor's office, who said to bring her in.

The doctor said that she felt a little bit of lymph node and Abby's throat was red, and they hadn't had many young kids in with the flu so she wanted to take a strep culture.  I asked about the possibility of it being a staph infection and she said that even though she didn't think it was likely, she'd do a regular throat culture to check for both.  Abby was very upset about the culture and the woman felt very bad, so she offered to get Abby a popsicle and asked which flavor.  Abby didn't answer, so I probed her to choose a flavor and Abby said "I want her to surprise me."  Abby was happy after she received her pink flavor ice. The doctor wanted to put Abby on some antibiotics until the results came back, but I opted to hold off since she was just on them not too long ago and we don't even know if she has a virus or what's going on with her.   Abby and I dropped the the culture at the lab downstairs and headed home for some rest.   The culture will take 48 hours, since that will be this weekend, we probably won't know until Monday.

Tonight, while eating dinner, Abby got very upset and I felt her and she felt super hot.  We took her temperature and she was around 103 degrees.  I called in to have the dr. on call give us a call and luckily it was Dr. Lamm, who is always very helpful.  We gave Abby some ibuprofen and both girls a lukewarm bath and by bed time Abby was feeling cooler.

Active Dreamers

Both Abby and Zoë had such an active sleep last night.  Abby was talking in her sleep... a lot!  Many different times we heard her, mostly about Cinderella and other fairy tales.  At one point Zoë started fitting and kicking at her blankets and started shouting, "Get off!  No, no, Get off!"  Chris gave her a calming "shh, shh, shh" and she shouted "No, I don't want you!"  This repeated a few times, and I began thinking that maybe she was actually talking to him, but we figured out that she was indeed just dreaming.  I ended up having to get up and calm her back to a peaceful sleep.

At one point Abby began singing in her sleep.  Chris looked over the side of the bed just in time to see her lift her head and swing it from side to side as she sang, "Once upon a dream, once upon a dream!" it was so funny and I was laughing so hard I thought I'd wake her up.

Library Story Time

Zoë and Abby were so thrilled to be joining in on library story time today, it's been so long.  They were very excited to see Ms. Mary as well.  It was a very small group today, but we did see Skylar and Paige, who came with their 'Nana'.  Zoë was especially excited because today's theme was about dogs and there was a big felt board for "Dog's Colorful Day", in which everyone got to take turns putting on their felt circle in different colors.  Ms. Mary had also brought a large dog puppet.  At the end all of the kids got to make paper bag dog puppets (like the ones we made at Abby and Zoë's third birthday party)

Just Some Errands

We did some school stuff this morning, working with introducing middle sounds in words, and we also had lots of reading time and fun play time.  Both of the girls woke up very cranky from nap and by the time we got things together we didn't have time to walk to do the errands we needed to run, so we took the car.  Finally, while out on the errands Abby and Zoë got in better moods.  They were happy that they got to go into the library, even though they spent their time helping look for movies for Mommy and Daddy.

Last Day with Grandma Cindy

Grandma Cindy spent the night on Sunday and had most of the day today to spend with us.  Abby and Zoë finally got Grandma Cindy to play candy land with them, as well as plenty of other things that kept them busy this morning.  This afternoon we went to Wal-Mart and then went through the Taco Bell drive through for some food to take home for dinner.  Auntie Reanna arrived to pick Grandma Cindy up just after we got home.  Abby and Zoë had asked Grandma Cindy if they'd be able to play with her for a little bit before she left, and when they ended up not being able to, they were pretty upset.  This, of course, made it harder for Grandma Cindy to say good-bye, but she managed to hold it together through hugs and kisses.

The Writing on the Wall

Abby came into the kitchen today and says, "Mom, I'm sorry I wrote on the wall with the crayon."  I was setting up for a fuming talk of how I should be able to trust her to color in the other room by now, but then I approached the said wall, saw her perfect 'e's' and 'a's', took a deep breath and told her how great her letters came out.  Then I explained that she needs to come and ask me for blank paper if she doesn't want to draw in the coloring book.  This was our first wall writing experience and I was just shocked that she'd actually written on the wall.  Thanks to the 'magic eraser', our wall is as good as new.

Fill A Bag Sale

As soon as we were done at the farmer's market, I went over to the re-sale shop for their sale.  I made out this time.  I got two bags, when I normally stick to just one, but I just couldn't pass up the things I needed a second bag for.  Here's what I got for $10:
1 bikini
4 fleece tops (2 pull-over microfleece and 2 zip up with hoods)
2 sets (tops and bottoms) of thermals
2 turtlenecks
3 sweaters (two with turtlenecks, one button down) and one sweater vest type shirt, which we actually have the same one in a different color of already.
2 pairs of pajamas (one feetsie and one disney princesses top and bottom set)
2 pairs of pants (one cords, one jeans)
3 pairs of printed leggings
1 pair of lined pants that I'm hoping will work as snow pants
AND, the big scores were 2 fall/winter coats!  One ended up being really big on the girls, but we'll just make it work.

The majority of the clothes were Children's Place Brand, some were Osh Kosh, and the rest were no name brands.  I really felt like I got a lot of much needed items for a great price.

Funny Ideas

The other day, as we were getting ready to leave the library with Grandma Cindy, Zoe asked us "How does a Mommy and Daddy make a baby?"  Well, I thought I had a little longer before she asked me that exact question, but I've always tried to just explain things appropriately for her age, but with the correct information, so I began trying to figure out how to word the answer, but by the time I got to "God makes Mommy's and Daddy's very special so that..."  she was on to something else.  I guess I'll figure out how to finish the conversation for when she inevitably remembers she asked me this question.

Today while Abby was out with Chris, he asked her if she knew where money comes from.  Of course she did, "From the machine" , she answered.  Daddy asked what would happen if there wasn't any more in there and she said that she had some in her fishy purse.  Daddy asked about when that runs out and she told him that we'd just make it at home.  Then he had the discussion with her about how Daddy has to work and when he does that someone pays him and that the bank just holds our money for us like a big fishy purse, and all of those financial things.

Wow!!  good answers!!

The Big Switch to Booster Seats

This came as a surprise to us, as I thought we had a while before we had to make the switch.  There had been a recall for a part on our car seats, just a part that adjusts the harness straps, which seemed fine on ours, but they were part of the recall so... the replacement parts came the other day and I brought the seats in the house to fix them.  While I was doing this I got the manual for the seats out to check on the height requirements for the different positions, more so to check on the rear-facing because the other day after arriving home from a drive Zoe says to me, "Mom, I don't want to look at your heads anymore, can you turn me back around?"  I told her that wasn't an option anymore, but thought I'd check just to make sure anyway.  Turned out that, not only are they too tall to be rear facing for our seats, they are also almost too tall to be using them like we are with the harness straps.  I was so shocked, I had Chris measure the girls, sure that they weren't at this stage yet.  I just wasn't prepared for this.

The girls measured at 39 inches, the manual said "When your child is over 40 pounds or over 40 inches you must begin using this seat as a belt positioning booster."  The weight that it says is enough to begin using it this way is 30 pounds, the girls barely meet that requirement.  I knew that they always outgrew these standards for height way before weight, but they just seem so small still.  I took Abby and a seat out to the car and tried it out with the car seat belt and, sure enough, she was in with the seat belt tight and in all of the correct positions and she and the seat were very secure.  I procrastinated a little on finishing the job of taking all of the harness straps out and putting the seats back in for use as boosters, but finally got to it and this afternoon Abby took her first booster seat ride.  Chris was just going to go to the post office himself quickly, but Abby insisted on going with him and when she got back she told me all about her first booster seat ride in such a grown up way... like, "yeah mom, this is the way it is now."

Staggering Bed Times

We decided to try something new with bed times.  Partially because of the difficulty Abby and Zoe have been having calming down after lights out, partially to give them time away from each other and one on one with us.  The first night was last night, Zoe's turn for "up time".  After teeth were brushed and pj's were on, Abby and I went into her room, while Zoe went downstairs.  I read Abby her extra story and bible story, we said prayers and then the lullaby.  I went back down to read to Zoe and do puzzles.  There was a lot of crying from Abby, I ended up going back up to sit with her while Zoe finished up her time downstairs.

Tonight went smoother.  Zoe went in to bed and we did the routine and I stayed with her for a little bit while Abby had some "Daddy time" then I went back downstairs.  Zoe kept quiet and both girls went to sleep alright.  I think they are liking this new arrangement, though they must make sure that they give each other hugs and kisses and say goodnight to each other or we have to interrupt everything to do it later.

Fancy Dinner Out

We went with Grandma Cindy to a new restaurant in town that has been getting some good reviews, Brazo.  It's not a super fancy place, but fancier than say, Olive Garden.  When I placed the reservation and mentioned that two in our party were children, they asked, "just out of curiosity" how old the kids were... there wasn't a high chair or booster seat to be seen.  We got a very elegant looking booth and settled in with some bread to nibble while waiting for our orders.  Zoë was doing very well quietly occupying herself, Abby was having a little bit more of a difficult time throughout the meal, but by no means was she a nuisance.  I ordered the pescado rellaño, Chris ordered the grilled wild salmon, and Grandma Cindy ordered two appetizers as her meal; duck confit empanadas, and mariscada.  We also ordered mini medianoche for the girls to nibble while we waited for our food.  Chris and I agreed that we enjoyed his meal the best out of everything we'd ordered.  We even ventured for dessert... a chocolate banana bread pudding.  Abby and Zoë each got a bite and then Chris took them back to the house for popsicles (trying to end on a good note at the restaurant, behavior wise) while Grandma Cindy and I stayed to polish off dessert, pay for the meal, and then walked back home.

Midweek School Lessons

This morning we started with a "how does it end" game.  There were rows of picture cards and the girls had to pick out which picture ended with the same sound as the first one in the row.  It took some work, as we had been working a lot with beginning sounds previously.  They both started to catch on, tomorrow I think we'll do this one again, with new picture card rows.  Next we sat in a "circle" and I explained the game we were going to play then I said that I was going on a trip to the playground and what I was going to bring.  Zoë had to say what I was going to bring and then what she was going to bring that rhymed with my item, on Abby's turn she had to say our two plus one more that rhymed.  We may do this game again tomorrow with beginning or ending sounds, or choose a new game working with the same things.

After nap I set out the number memory match game I made.  Abby and Zoë have recognition of numbers 1-10 down, but we need to work on numbers 11-20 so I took index cards, cut them in half and wrote the same number on each side so that we had pairs from 11-20.  I also spelled out the number below the numerals.  Abby and Zoë love memory match, so this was a good way to work on recognizing the numbers.  They both had some good guesses on ones they weren't sure of, such as "five-teen" "three-teen".

Tonsil Free Special Treatment

This morning Abby and Zoë got to watch one little Magic School Bus episode with Grandma Cindy while I did my housework, then after nap we went to the library and picked out some good books, all of the "Biscuit" series that were available, which are early reader books, and our first chapter book!  I got the first in the "Junie B. Jones" series, which is a chapter book geared towards a little younger crowd, like early elementary.  There are few pictures, but the story line is cute and I thought it would be fun to read a chapter or so a day with the girls.  We also picked out five movies.  As Grandma Cindy and I were looking for Aladdin, Abby spotted one with Barbie on it, which she recognized from borrowing Dakota's Barbie Princess movie.  I reluctantly let her get it, as well as Cinderella 3, which she hasn't stopped talking about since I *gasp* took it back to the library after we last checked it out.  Ms. Mary was out on her dinner break, so Abby and Zoë settled for leaving her a note and we'll hopefully get back tomorrow or Thursday for story time.

Abby and Zoë got another surprise back at home, a care package came from Becky and Ken with some very exciting things in it.  Each girl got a new 24 piece puzzle (I was just telling Chris that it was time to get them new puzzles too), a strawberry shortcake sticker book, and candy!  There was one big lollipop (the flat spiral kind) and a pumpkin one that I think might be chocolate rather than hard candy... we've yet to open them to find out.  They also got a really cute giraffe card and a memory match game to share.  Grandma Cindy and I went to get Abby and Zoë's next treat (pizza and calzones from Savario's... their first pizza since having tonsils removed) and when we got back, the girls were working on opening the puzzles.  They did the "Littlest Pet Shop" puzzle first and I was amazed at how quickly Abby was putting it together, and then Zoë, who joined in at the end.  I guess they are ready to try a puzzle with a little more pieces.  I'm sure they'll get to trying to figure out the Winnie the Pooh puzzle first thing in the morning.  Thanks Becky and Ken!

And for the final treat of the evening... Abby and Zoë got to have a movie and popcorn night with Grandma Cindy.  They watched, what else, Cinderella 3.

Back into the Swing of School Lessons

With a long hiatus from our lessons, we eased back into things this morning.  Unfortunately, even though I prepped the activity for it, we didn't do this afternoon's math game/lesson as we spent some time at the library instead.  This morning we did a "make a rhyme" activity with the 'Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear' rhyme and then we got out our picture cards to do a 'which one doesn't belong' kind of thing with the beginning sounds of pictures.  With three pictures in each row they had to pick out which one didn't belong and why. (i.e. the fan didn't go with the nine and the nest because these two started with an 'nnnn' sound and the other started with a 'ffff' sound.)  Abby and Zoë were pretty good at this game and as I was putting the picture cards away, they spotted "Sound Puppet" in the folder and wanted him to come out and say hello.

I had an art and math activity planned, but as I said, we didn't get to that today so I'll try and make those up tomorrow... Ah, the beauty of preschool at home.

Nail Salon Mayhem

Abby and Zoë really wanted to go to church today, and I was going to go for it, but Chris and I talked and decided that we should hold off for today, just as not to risk anything since the girls aren't 100% healed yet.  Instead, I inticed Abby and Zoë with promises of polishing nails, after trimming and filing of course.  First, I got out outfits I knew the girls would want to wear.  A dress with long sleeves and tights, and then a skirt with tights and a "dressy" shirt.  Abby and Zoë were pleased about being able to wear these.

Abby was first for the polishing and she chose purple sparkle polish.  Usually they pick a color to go under this, since the polish is kind of see through with just purple sparkles in it, but Abby wanted just the purple.  Once this layer was dry, she got to choose stickers for her thumbs, she chose hearts.  Next we did the top coat and, once dry, she was on her way.  It was so funny because she was super careful for the longest time, even after I told her they were dry.  We decided to let the girls get a burrito from Taco Bell since, last time Daddy and I ate from there was when the girls were having night one in the hospital and they couldn't have any.  So, Zoë was alright with waiting on her nails while we went to get the food and bring it home.  After lunch it was really time to be putting them to nap, so Zoë agreed, though very reluctantly, to wait a little longer for her turn at the 'nail salon', which is what the girls like to pretend we're doing.

After nap it was finally her turn.  Zoë chose to do bright pink and then the purple sparkle polish and butterfly stickers for her thumbnails. When Abby caught sight of Zoë's almost finished nails, it was total melt down mode.  Abby liked the way Zoë's nails looked and wanted hers that way too.  No amount of explaining about her polish already being done, nor talks about sticking with choices, nor hearing how pretty her nails were would do the trick.  She was an emotional wreck for the longest time.  Finally I had both girls get ready to go for a walk to find some leaves for projects.  Abby calmed down enough to be able to go with us, but obviously wasn't over this fiasco because we saw our neighbor Barbara as we were heading down the stairs of the porch and said hello, but as we were walking on Abby got upset because she hadn't had a chance to tell Barbara about not getting pink polish under her sparkle polish.  Luckily we saw enough distractions on our walk.  We watched a seagull take a bath in the water, then saw a tomato plant growing by the side of the road, in no ones yard.  We got some nice leaves and then headed back to the house for dinner.

Recovery Day Ten

Abby and Zoë are definitely on the mend.  They didn't have much pain medicine at all today and I think we're almost getting back to a somewhat normal routine.  The girls enjoyed a little art project before lunch today.  We sat and cut out lots of pictures of food and then put them into groups of "junk food" and "healthy food" (or at least healthier than the junk food) and glued them to their respective sides of a large piece of construction paper.

After nap, and both girls actually napped at a (semi) normal time today, Abby and Zoë helped me make dinner after they were done snack and then after dinner was all cleaned up, Daddy and his girls took a walk down the street and back.  They got lots of comments, having to due with the fantastic ensembles Abby and Zoë had  put together.  They had capri pants with long socks and their sparkle shoes along with their princess outfits and play jewelry on over this.  When they got back to the house we picked a handful of ripe tomatoes from our plants and brought them in... before a big rain that we weren't supposed to get until Monday.
