Recovery Day Eight

Abby and Zoë are feeling a bit better today and I've started weaning them off of their pain medicine.  Having a distraction may have helped keep their minds off of things... Grandma Cindy and Tikva came over today after arriving late last night.  My mom will be teaching a training in Ma. again tomorrow through Monday, but she was able to get a little visit in before having to head down.  Neither of the girls napped today when they were supposed to, Abby didn't yesterday either.  It's difficult when they wake up so much later than normal, because they are definitely ready for naps later, just not until like 3:00.  We went to Wal-Mart, where both girls got to take turns walking Tikva on her short leash - since she's a 'Working Dog', she's able to go into the store - around while we did our shopping, a nice distraction.

Grandma Cindy had wanted to treat us to dinner and we had planned on just ordering in, given the crankies Abby and Zoë were exhibiting, but then they fell asleep on the way home from the store and we let them grab a cat nap while we unloaded the groceries.  Since they were still sleeping we decided to go ahead and just go to the restaurant.  As we were leaving the driveway, Abby then Zoë woke up so I gave them their medicine then.  It must have been just the right amount of time before dinner, and also that they're just getting an appetite back, because they ate so much.  We went to Taipei Tokyo, where the girls started with miso soup, edemame, and seaweed salad.  Then Zoë ate a very good portion of my terriyaki salmon along with some rice and broccoli.  She also ate some of Grandma Cindy's chicken.  Abby had some of my salmon, a good amount of Grandma Cindy's chicken, a piece of Daddy's spider roll, and rice and focused mostly on the miso soup.  Abby and Zoë finished dinner off with tri-flavored fortune cookies and orange slices, which I was surprised weren't stinging their throats.

After finally deciding they were full, both of the girls were excited to check out the big fish in the tank that they'd been eying during dinner.  Thanks Grandma Cindy!

Recovery Day Seven

Zoë finally felt like going out of the house today.  Yesterday, when Abby and I went for our walk, Zoë didn't feel like going.  Today though, Zoë was ready to go on an errand with me.  First, I stopped to get the mail at the post office and Zoë was glad she'd come along because she and Abby had both received 'get well soon' cards from Melvin and Dee.  She was very excited when she opened the card and saw a $5 bill and put it quickly into her fishy purse, which she'd brought along.

Next we went to the health food store, where Zoë picked out a carob peanut butter cup that she wanted to get with her own money.  I could see how "big" and important she felt to be buying her own treat.  It was really cute, when I was getting my items, she was already getting into her purse and getting ready.

When we got back to the house, Abby was watching Cinderella, and Zoë happily joined her.  Then Abby got to get the other little treats I picked up, carob spirulina chunks, and I had to remind Zoë inconspicuously about why she wasn't getting any.  Abby liked her cute card as well, and also had me put her money right into her purse, both girls carried their cards around all afternoon.

Recovery Day Six

Zoë started things off interestingly this morning.  I was making a special request order of french toast and Zoë was sitting on the floor in the kitchen.  She was a bit whiney and then all of the sudden she got sick on the floor.  I scooped her up and held her over the sink and she finished pretty quickly.  After getting cleaned up and some small sips of water, she was all better.  Her mood was fantastic in fact.  I'm not sure how much of her medicine came up, but she seemed to be alright pain wise.  She ate most of her french toast pieces, little bits at a time, and was using manners left and right.  Before that her and Abby were both falling asleep on the couch, after just getting up.  Zoë decided to take her food into the living room, where Abby was watching Sleeping Beauty, or actually trying to keep her eyes open to watch it.

Today was a pretty sleepy day.  There were periods of play, but more sleeping today than anything.  Both of the girls were sleepy this morning, especially Abby, who went back to bed and slept for a while after the movie.  They also got very hungry around lunch time.  Abby finished her plate of french toast, then both girls had some cheerios soaked in soy milk, then shortly after getting down from the table they were begging me to make them a little pizza like I'd made Daddy.  I made one with a soft fluffy crust and the girls shared that and then both ate a swiss roll.  Then it was down for a nap.  Abby needed a little help going to sleep, Zoë went out on her own, but then they both slept for a long time.

Not big appetites for dinner, just a small amount of mac 'n cheese and later some soy milk, but they were very thirsty.  I was making myself a housework chart/calendar and while I was doing this Abby wanted to write with a pencil, then of course Zoë did too.  Abby drew a great picture of our house, with me standing next to it (Complete with shoes, earrings, a dress, and beautiful circle eyes and a nose - she also draws chins on her people) Then next to me there was a picture of what started out as a popsicle that she wrote 10's and 11's inside, then she drew the mailbox next to me.  (Her and I went out to check the mail and for a walk around the block earlier this evening) I could tell what everything was, and the house was great with square windows and a rectangle door with a circle knob.  Her drawing is really progressing.  Both girls then wanted lots of instruction on writing things.  Zoë needed some help with the letters of her name, she has gotten into the phase of writing some letters backwards - I think part of her struggles might be trying to write the letters out the way I model but trying to do it with her left hand.  I'll have to figure out something better there I guess, for my little lefty.  Then Abby wanted me to write the tracing letters for her too and was writing Zoë's name all over her own paper.  They got a late night spurt of writing interest.  Until a crash, which prompted the bed time ritual to begin.

I looked with a flashlight at each of the girls throats tonight... definitely still a lot of recovery needing to happen in there.

Finally Some Visitors

Reanna and Corey came over today, which made Abby and Zoë very excited to have some visitors.  They played all sorts of games with Reanna, mostly of the princess/queen variety and even dragged Corey in as "Beast".  Reanna brought them a gift of a new Bible!  Abby and Zoë have been outgrowing their current Bible so Reanna got them a "My First Message" Bible, which is for 4-8 year olds.  Reanna also brought a small basket to help with toy organization and a deck of yoga pose cards that I'd lent her a while ago.

Corey bought us dinner from an Indian restaurant that we really like in town, which Abby and Zoë ended up eating a good portion of the nan from, so that was good.  Besides that, their dinner had consisted of chocolate soy ice "cream" with peanut butter whipped in.  I gave the girls their medicine shortly before Reanna and Corey left this evening and they got to witness the effects it has on the girls.  This evening, with the added excitement of company, the medicine had a hyper effect on the girls, but especially Abby.  She was literally just bouncing all over the place and had such a hard time calming down and stilling herself.

Recovery Day Four

Abby and Zoë are currently taking two different medicines, and another one that we filled the prescription for hasn't had to be used yet.  They are on amoxacillin (antibiotic as I'm sure you all know), and roxicet, which is a pain killer (the nurse at the hospital said that it is basically a liquid percocet.)  We haven't used the other medicine yet, which is for nausea and vomiting.  The "roxy" tends to knock the girls out,  especially for Abby, who frequently puts herself back to bed throughout the day.  Zoë has gone back to bed and slept a lot more than usual as well, but is awake a bit more during the day.  If they aren't sleeping the meds off, Abby and Zoë are quite loopy.  Also they do things that they know they shouldn't be doing... right in front of us, and just doing things that don't make sense.  Oh what ups and downs we've had in our house the past few days.

SAMOM Sale a Bust

I'm pretty sure this is the first time that I went to the S.A.M.O.M. sale and came out with nothing.  I stepped away from Abby and Zoë briefly to try and find some winter gear, but found it hard to find good coats in their sizes... what a bummer.  I'd told myself that was the only thing I was there for, so I left after not finding what I was looking for.

Recovery Day Two

Today started out alright.  Abby had a good amount of energy and both girls were bee boppin' around.  Late morning came, however and Zoë put herself down for a nap.  While Zoë was sleeping, Abby requested a scrambled egg, and even ate it.  She also tired a little cream of wheat and had some stuff to drink.  Zoë got up after a while and thought an egg sounded good, so she had one too.  During this time, Abby then put herself down for a nap.  Abby and Zoë both ate a bit and drank a bit throughout the morning and though they complained of pain, things weren't going too terribly bad.

We had to go over to Wal-Mart to get some more things and decided that Abby and Zoë could handle coming along for the ride.  Dr. Rankin had said that having them come along for errands was fine.  Well, just before getting to Wal-Mart, Zoë lost everything she'd eaten and drank.  She was pretty run down after this and we were just concerned with getting enough liquids as well as food into both girls.  We were surprised when both Abby and Zoë were ready for a nap again around normal nap time and went right to sleep and slept for a good few hours.  Our other concern is that Zoë hasn't pooped since Tuesday.  Abby went Thursday but it was just a small amount and it was hard and pebbly.

Recovery Day One

I'm so glad we took advantage of the option to stay overnight at the hospital.  In the wee hours of the morning, about 3:00 a.m. Zoë woke up really upset about her tummy hurting.  I noticed that her diaper was dry (we had put them in diapers for the night since they still had i.v. fluids being pumped through them) and she hadn't gone pee in hours so we tried that and sure enough, after going about a gallon of pee, she felt better.  We were all up at this point, as I had Abby go potty also.  Her diaper was somewhat wet, but she peed a lot too.  After this I just ended up curling up at the end of Abby and Zoë's bed with my pillow, since I was getting up so much I figured this would just be easier for everyone.

I woke up this morning and just sat at the end of the bed for a few minutes before actually getting up.  It was sweet to see the girls sleeping snuggled together, and I could see that their chests made their arms rise and fall at the exact same time as they breathed in time with each other.  During the day they would just reach over and give each other hugs and kisses.

Abby and Zoë took a liking to their i.v. machines and called them "beepy" and insisted on pushing the machine into the bathroom on their own when they had to pee.  They both actually got pouty when it was time for the nurse to take out their iv's and take their "beepy" machines away.

Abby and Zoë's voices do sound different, Zoë's more so than Abby's.  Dr. Rankin explained to us that Zoë's adenoids were bigger than Abby's so we're wondering if this could account for some of that.  I think that part of the reason the girls are talking differently is because things are swollen, especially their uvulas, which are huge!  We checked out this morning around 9:00 a.m.  Abby and Zoë both got to choose an item from the "treasure chest" and then they shared a wheelchair downstairs and just outside the doors.

Today's the Day

Well, here I am alone in a quiet house with everyone else sleeping.  In less than an hour I will wake Abby and Zoë up and get them dressed and try to get them into the car without much chaos.  They both know that they can't have anything to eat or drink and that they will get something after their surgery... that being said, I'm not sure how they'll be once they actually have to go without.

Mommy is nervous, Mommy feels like crying... or getting sick, whichever comes first.  It's not that I fear something will go wrong, those thoughts have been pushed firmly down and packed well, I have faith that everything is going to go smoothly and the girls will recover just fine.  It's all of the in between, all of the getting things right and being a yo-yo between my two little girls, and those little things that are still unknown.  Those are the things that have my stomach in knots.  However, when I get Abby and Zoë up I have to remind them how much of an adventure this is all going to be, be cheery and excited for them, and I am, sort of, a little bit.

So I thought I'd take this time to write, that one day Abby and Zoë will read this and know that their Mommy was up early in the morning on that fateful day when they separated from their tonsils,  fretting for her two little ladies and just trying to calm her nerves before things really got underway.

So Much Reading

I went to the library today to pick up a few more books I'd found from the online catalog.  Abby spent a good part of the morning, after lessons, reading her surgery booklet.  At the library I found, "Franklin Goes to the Hospital", "Good-Bye Tonsils", and "Dr. White", which is a story about a dog who visits sick kids in the hospital.  I also got a couple of non-hospital related books.  I picked up a very early Curious George dvd, with the characters being puppets instead of cartoon, the movie has the episode where George goes to the hospital.  We read all of the books I got and then the girls looked through them on their own and at snack time after dinner they watched the Curious George video.  Both of the girls informed me that they aren't scared.  Zoë told Nonna on the phone this evening that she wasn't going to cry.  I called the hospital this evening and got our arrival time, 7:00 a.m.  We should be discharged sometime on Thursday.  We took a couple of before photos today, to remind us of how large Abby and Zoë's tonsils really were.

words will not  make those anxious feelings go away. over time they will happen less and less as you have more and more opportunities to guide and teach your girls how to feel and react in those situations that are unknown and can easily lead to anxious feelings.I love you. you are a wonderful, caring daughter and mother.

Fairytale Land

Abby and Zoë are definitely girly girls when it comes to princesses and fairytales.  I went to the library during nap time today (unfortunately I had to do my errands while the girls were sleeping as the girls are still under "quarantine" ; ) ) and while browsing the movies I was astonished to see "Cinderella 3 - A twist in time" I didn't even realize there was a "2" let alone a third.  The library didn't own the second movie in dvd, so I just got the third figuring Abby and Zoë wouldn't mind skipping over one.

When the girls saw the movie  I had brought home, their faces showed total amazement and their eyes just lit up, it was so funny.  Abby and Zoë got to watch the movie this evening while I was at yoga and when I got home they couldn't stop telling me all about it.  Zoë was a bit cranky just before lights out time after the bed time routine and she used her "tell me ticket" to sob to me that she wanted to be Cinderella.  I told her she could go right ahead and dress up and be Cinderella tomorrow morning... crisis diverted.

Enjoying the Sunshine... From the Porch

Abby and Zoë are officially in quarantine.  We've been told on a number of occasions that if the girls are sick a few days before surgery, it will have to be postponed.  Also, during our own research we read of the increased risks of complications should one be sick when having surgery.  To avoid any problems we are just keeping them home with no visitors as it's now just a few days until they will be tonsil and adenoid free.

We had some beautiful sunshine today though, so this morning Chris set Abby and Zoë up on the porch to play a while.  Then I served them lunch on the porch, which promptly ended when a bug landed on Zoë's plate and she wanted nothing more to do with being outside.  At least they got a little vitamin d in.

Pass the Seal

We played our own little version of "hot potato" this evening.  Abby and Zoë have these little stuffed seals that they've been carrying around lately.  We sat in a circle and tossed the seal around, trying to perfect tossing and catching and then speeding the game up and then adding the other seal.  Chris explained the "hot potato" game and at one point as we were going around, Zoë tooted and exclaimed, "That sounds like a hot potato!" I wonder where she got that sense of humor.

Just Us Girls

From about 10:00 this morning the girls and I have had the house to ourselves... unheard of around here.  Daddy went to help Uncle Corey with a bathroom remodeling project he's doing, so Abby, Zoë and myself worked on our own projects around the house.  The first thing we did was plant a spruce seedling.  We went out on the porch with a medium sized planter that had been in the basement and dug in the dirt to loosen it, then poured some water in and after I put the seedling in, Abby and Zoë put some more water over the soil.  After this we had a nice shower with some pecan pie scented bath soap, which the girls call cinnamon bun soap, before having lunch and a nap.  While Abby and Zoë were napping, I took the opportunity to get some cleaning done... mostly just junk removal.  When the girls got up from nap, Daddy still wasn't home yet, so I started on a little project of making them a pretend play stove.  I had to stop to get dinner going, which Abby helped pick out.  Finally, as the girls and I were emptying our bowls of our spaghetti with pesto, Daddy pulled in the driveway.  Abby and Zoë gave him hugs and kisses and told him how much they'd missed him.

Wednesday School Lessons

I don't believe I mentioned the new addition to my teaching team... we call it "Sound Puppet".  (It seems to switch between us referring to it as "he" or "she".  I usually say "he", but the girls refer to everything as "she")  Sound Puppet was introduced last week, it is a white paper lunch bag with a crayon face and name tag.  Sound Puppet is very picky, he tells Abby and Zoë what he likes and then they have to choose something to give to them that starts with the same letter.  For some reason Abby and Zoë really like Sound Puppet and get upset when he has to go back in his folder.

Today the Picky Puppet came out again to help play the oddity task game with alliteration using our picture cards.  I put out pictures of soap, snake, log, leaf, tie, 10 (ten), bus, and a bat, mixed them up and then had the sound puppet take turns telling Abby and Zoë what he liked and asking them to pick two cards whose names started with the same letter.  So, to start, Sound Puppet told Abby that he liked taco's and asked for two more things that started with the same letter as t-t-t-taco.  (Apparently Sound Puppet also has a stuttering problem)  Next, Sound Puppet told Zoë he liked burgers and before I even went over the sound Zoë immediately picked up the bus and bat.  It amazes me how quickly Zoë gets things like this.  We're going to start discussing the ending sounds of words as well, but continue to refresh with the beginning sounds as review and also because Abby is still trying to fully grasp it.

Before Sound Puppet came out we played a couple of clapping games.  First we did patterns with things like clapping, patting, and squeezing (hugging ourselves), then we did a count to the beat with clapping.

Today's School Lessons

Literacy: First I explained a listening game to the girls and said a set of three words that rhymed and they took turns saying other words that rhymed with them. To go along with this I made a white board substitute, as we haven't had time to browse Wal-mart for the magnetic white board I'm hoping to find, by taping white paper to the back of a cookie sheet and then taping plastic wrap over that. On it we worked on adding different consanants to ending words ("at", "an", etc.) to see how many words we could make with them. Next I put sets of picture cards on the floor: sun, socks, fan, fish, leaf, and log in a mixed up order, then I had the girls take turns picking a pair that started with the same letter.

Art: I talked about patterns and again used the makeshift white board to give examples of line patterns and have Abby and Zoë take turns finishing the patterns. After this we made pattern bracelets. I cut a slit down a toilet paper tube lenghtwise and then cut it around in three sections to make three "bangle bracelts" I had Abby and Zoë choose what color they wanted their bracelts to be and cut strips of construction paper to fit over the toilet paper tube. Each of the girls picked a pattern they wanted to draw on their paper; Abby chose flowers and squares, Zoë chose triangles and squares and I showed them what the pattern might look like by drawing it on the "white board". With a little help to get started, Abby and Zoë decorated their bracelets and then glued the paper to the toilet paper tube piece and showed off their pattern bracelets to Daddy.

Math: We worked a little on one-to-one correspondence today, incorporating it into snack time. Abby and Zoë are actually pretty good at this for their age, but sometimes they do still get ahead of themselves when counting so I put a pile of goldfish crackers on the table and then had them practice taking one at a time from the big pile and making a new pile in front of them.  I was trying to get them to work on two things here: counting each item one at a time and organizing so they keep track of what they're counting.

A Walk in the Fall Sunshine

It's been a few days since the girls really got out of the house, besides quick little errands in the car.  So, this morning We all went for a nice family walk into town.  After stopping at the post office, where Mommy got a sample of new Folgers gourmet coffee, we walked back through the park.  We walked out on one of the piers and checked out the water and boats going by then Abby and Zoë danced around on the stage, then sat on the whale, which they named "Skipper" after hearing it on a Scooby Doo episode we got from the library, and ran through the grass before walking back home for lunch.

Junk Food Express - Update

Well, Abby and Zoë are definitely liking their new treats we've been giving them.  It's funny though, at first the girls, more so Abby than Zoë, would eat the healthy accompaniment before going on to the treat.  Still, if I give, say grapes and a twinkie, they'll usually want the grapes first.  Also, we've definitely noticed behavior differences since adding the junk food.  They are more jumpy and fidgety and just more hyper and also have more fits and are generally a bit more grumpy.  Not just after the treats either, just generally throughout the day.  We will certainly not be keeping these treats around after the cupboard empties out.  It will be back to good old veggies and fruits with dips and all of our other tasty, more healthy treats.

Snuggly Differences

We find it interesting that, since Abby and Zoë first started sleeping with "snugglies" Abby has kept the same one, her bunny, while Zoë switches out.  Zoë kept her "yellow bear" for a while and then around age 2 she switched to "teddy". After that it was Spots, and then Dobie that were needed night time companions. Recently Dobie was involved in an accident and spent a day or two in the laundry basket before getting a bath and then Zoë found teddy again. The few times that bunny has been out of service (we usually try to get these things washed before the next sleepy time) Abby has been convinced to sleep with something else, but it's always met with dismay and complaints that the new snuggly doesn't have ears like bunny, with which to rub her nose of course. There have a been a few times that tears were shed from Zoë about wanting Dobie to sleep with, but usually she'll take to another stuffed toy around the house fairly easily.
