Daddy's School of Wrestling

Chris has gotten into teaching Abby and Zoë some wrestling moves from his high school days.  The girls really love the time with Daddy and are actually picking up some of the moves quickly.  Chris will practice some things with each girl and then help them wrestle against each other, using the moves Daddy just taught them.  Abby and Zoë ask Chris when it will be Daddy wrestle time daily now.

That sounds like fun as long as no one gets hurt.
Daddy and Uncle Matt wrestled in high school. Nonna was a nervous wreck watching them wrestle but very happy  when they won.

A September Visit From Uncle Matt

It's been a little while since we've seen Uncle Matt.  Despite this, it didn't take Abby and Zoë long to run to him and want his full attention constantly.  There were princess tea parties had, stories read (a new one that Caitlin picked up for the girls about a porcupine named fluffy, since it reminded her of the porcupine we encountered during our camping trip in VT), board games and card games played, and lots of other pestering, I mean playing going on.  Abby and Zoë were bummed when Uncle Matt started getting ready to go after dinner, and kept informing him that we have a guest bed now in their room.  They did get him to stay past his intended leave time, but their initial efforts to get him to stay overnight were in vain.  They got over it quickly enough... by having me read their new book a few more dozen times.

Junk Food Express

In an attempt to get a few extra pounds on Abby and Zoë before their surgery, Chris stocked up on junk food that we don't normally keep in the house.  We now have a spot in our cupboard that houses; crunchy Cheeto's, twisted puff Cheeto's, tortilla chips, and scoops chips.  Also a host of little Debbie and hostess snacks including: strawberry shortcake rolls, swiss rolls, banana flavored twinkies, raspberry zingers, nutty bars, golden cupcakes as well as all chocolate cupcakes, oh and one Chris didn't even realize he'd gotten until we were putting it in the cupboard, fudge cake bars.  Yeah... that's a lot of junk food.  Our plan is to give a little of the "junk" along with other food they're already eating.  So, after dinner we'll offer one of the goodies, since kids will almost always make room for treats. I can't believe the calories and fat in some of these things!  In 7 of the puffs ( a serving) Cheeto's there are 10g of fat and 160 calories!  The nutty bars are even worse with two cookie sticks containing 18g of fat and 310 calories!  And Zoë will chow right through both cookies after a meal.  Abby had a harder time finishing both cookies, but came pretty close after already having had seconds of dinner.  Chris and I are just shocked at the nutrition facts on these things.

Abby Sleep Giggler

For the past few nights we have heard Abby giggling in her sleep. For the first couple of nights, we just heard the giggling and maybe some talking that we couldn't understand.  Last night, however, we heard some conversation along with the giggling.  I happened to be up at 4:00 in the morning trying to help Zoë back to sleep to witness it.  Abby giggled, then said "Get out of the basket, Zoë." Then she giggled some more and said "You get out of the basket and then I'll get out of the basket." It was so funny... I had to explain to Zoë that her sister was just talking in her sleep while dreaming.

Nutritionist Appointment - September

Marge came by today, to see Abby and Zoë before their surgery, and give us some suggestions on how to "beef them up" a bit, in anticipation for losing some weight after they get their tonsils out. We last saw Marge in July.  Here are their stats:
They are both 29.5 pounds... so close to 30!  Both of the girls are also growing taller quickly (no wonder I just had to put away just about all of their 3T pants and switch them out with the 4T's).
Abby had grown just a smidgen taller than Zoë, Abby's at 38 1/4 inches, where Zoë's at 381/8.  The fact that Abby is slightly taller made her BMI and percentiles a little different as well.  For height both of the girls are in the 25th percentile.  Abby's BMI is 14.1, putting her just at the 10th percentile, Zoë's is 14.3, putting her in the 10th-25th bracket.
We are going to be moving from half of their chewable vitamin, to now getting a full vitamin.  Marge suggested it for the couple of weeks before their surgery, and since they're close to being 4, (Mommy's not admitting that yet) we'll just keep them at a full vitamin after as well.  We talked about giving different foods and things that we don't normally do, just to help with the weight issue in the upcoming weeks.  Chris had already gotten a bunch of junk food on our last shopping trip, which Marge actually said was a good idea since it was a short term thing.  She also gave us a sample of pediasure to try, which I think we'll get more of at the store.  We will get back in touch with Marge after Abby and Zoë are tonsil and adenoid-less.

At Home with Daddy

I went to fill in at Bethel again today, this time leaving Abby and Zoë with Chris, as to try and avoid getting them sick.  I got Abby and Zoë set at the table with lunch and then had to head out.  It wasn't too late after 1:00p.m. when they fell asleep, but Chris said that they didn't nap all that long.  When they got up they got to have popcorn for snack while watching Cinderella.  When I got home, the girls were wanting me to go out again.  I have a sneaking suspicion they are beginning to equate me leaving with them getting to watch a movie.

Home School Week 2

This morning for our literacy part of the morning we started by working on new rhyme, which I again wrote out on large paper.  It's sung to the tune of "Do you know the muffin man?"

Do you know two rhyming words, two rhyming words, two rhyming words,
Oh, do you know two rhyming words,
They sound a lot alike.

King and ring are rhyming words,
two rhyming words,
two rhyming words.
King and ring are rhyming words,
they sound a lot alike.

After sounding out the rhyming words and playing with different beginnings for "ing", Abby and Zoë both got a few turns to come up with different sets of rhyming words, which I then wrote on stick on notes and placed on the paper over the other rhyming words.

After that we looked at some picture cards.  We focused on the cards with fan, feet, snake, soap, man, and mop.  The girls picked out the ones that started with the same letter and then said what that letter was and then came up with other words that start with that letter also.

For art time we made maracas by pinching the end of a toilet paper tube and stapling it closed, then decorating the tube.  Once they were done to their liking, we filled it with beans and pinched the other end, so it was closed the opposite way of the other end, and stapled it closed, stapling little "streamers" into it as we closed it up.

Later on in the day, for Math time, we worked on sorting concepts.  I dumped out my bag of buttons and we talked about what sorting means and different ways to sort things and then tried sorting the buttons by color, then by how many holes they had.

A Package From NJ

Abby and Zoë were surprised to see a package arrive from NJ today.  Inside were some candies, some snack bars, and also a present for both of the girls.  Abby and Zoë both got really neat headbands, with knitted fabric on them and little boys and girls along the top of it, all with knitted tops and skirts.  There were also books on opposites and numbers in Spanish, as well as a coin purse for each girl with a Bolivian coin inside.  These things were all gifts from Bolivia.  They've been wearing the headbands since they unwrapped them, and also keep having me read their books, or read them to each other with coin purses in hand.  Thanks!

Sunday School Open House

Today after the church service was the open house for the new Sunday School program at our church.  There has been a lot of anticipation and excitement for this, as the area has been being worked on all summer.  It was really pretty neat.  The building(s) where we attend church is a historic building (I'm not positive of the date built) with the church building being on one side, and a connected "mansion" on the other.  You can see a picture of what the building looks like from the front here .   The "mansion"  is what has been transformed into the new  rotational Sunday school program.   There is a theater room, with actual movie seats and a projector, there's a puppet theater/story room, a music room, a computer room, all sort of different things for different age groups on all three of the floors.  It was fun to check everything out, Abby and Zoë are excited about attending.

Saturday Bargain Days

I had some things to drop off at the Goodwill, so we decided to make a morning of it, since the store is sandwiched between Family Dollar and Big Lots.  We went into Family Dollar first, where we found some nice deals.  I saw two piece, long sleeved shirts/long pants sets that were actually really cute, for around $7 as well as Disney Princess pajamas for $8 and other no name brand princess castles pj's for $6.  The pj's were a find because Abby and Zoë are quickly growing out of their pj's that are long pants and long sleeves.  Chris spotted Disney princess costumes for $5.  They weren't big froo froo dresses, just little two piece dress up outfits.  Abby chose Cinderella and Zoë chose Sleeping Beauty.  We found a few other small items before heading over to Goodwill.

At Goodwill, I made out yet again.  I got a pair of pants that fit really well, perfectly in the length, and had a yellow tag, which was the chosen color to be on sale that week, so they ended up being under $3.  Next we moved on to Big Lots, but we didn't get anything there because it didn't actually seem like that great of a deal, no better than Wal-Mart anyway.

A Day in Pre-K

Abby, Zoë, and I arrived at Bethel School just before the kids came in for lunch.  The girls enjoyed eating their lunch at the tables with the other kids, as well as having mats of their own to go lie down on.  Zoë was so excited when she found the mat with her things on it.  So excited in fact, that she ended up not sleeping, neither of the girls did.  The routine that the teachers have in this room is that they pat backs of those who still nap for about half an hour, until 1:30, and then those that are still awake are offered something quiet to do on their mats.  Abby and Zoë weren't quite asleep when they saw other kids getting toys, and that was the end of napping.  At 2:00, the kids that were awake were able to go into the other room and play with the things in there.

Abby and Zoë both got computer time as well as drawing pictures with their two friends that they used to be in the "toddler two's" with, Kelsey and Savanna... they even both drew Abby and Zoë pictures to bring home.  During this time snack was being set out, and Zoë kept trying to go out and sit herself down to eat before it was time.  After all that anticipation, it was hard to keep Abby and Zoë at the table to finish snack, as all of the other kids were running off to play.

At the end of the day during playground time, because it was very hot and humid outside, we stayed inside instead and the kids got to watch a Caillou video... my least favorite pbs show.  We had to leave during the movie, and that's when the no napping effects kicked in full force.  Needless to say, we had an early bed time tonight.

School Days

This morning for Literacy time we went over the poem we worked on previously.  This time I replaced the word "pop" with other short words and had the girls come up with rhyming words for them.  I'd put these words over the paper on sticky notes and we'd read the poem with the new words.  Abby and Zoë got into words with "an" at the end so then we changed to me writing "an" on paper and them trying out different letters in front to make new words.

We didn't get to all of our sorting things we were going to do this afternoon, but will finish that later, maybe tomorrow even though it's not one of our designated "school" days.

Back to Bethel

My friend Angie, who works at Bethel School where we used to go, said I could bring Abby and Zoë in a couple of mornings a week to socialize with her class and get playground time, as long as I stayed with them, so we went ahead and went in this morning.

Abby and Zoë got a few minutes of "centers" time and then did music, where they were very excited to be singing a song that included tapping their shoes, because they wore their sparkly ballet shoes.  Next some of the kids worked on letter M papers, while others started an art project of getting their whole bodies traced.  After the kids were done with their letter papers, I helped the ones who were waiting for the tracing, to write about pictures they drew of things they like. (September is "all about me" theme for them)  Zoë said she was drawing her "spots" doggy.  Abby drew a picture that looked like a person with curly hair and then a box below and then pink dots all around, never did get out of her what it was all about.  After this it was time to go out on the playground.  Abby and Zoë had a blast swinging and climbing and sliding and playing with the other kids.  We changed shoes before going outside, but the girls were bummed when I didn't change them back after they were done on the playground.  After playground time, the girls and I went home for lunch as the other kids were going inside to eat theirs.

While there, Miss Angie told me that they need a teacher downstairs in preschool on Wednesdays and Fridays from 12-4:30 and that if I did it until they found someone permanent, the girls could go for free.  Also, on those days I could come in a little earlier, just as a parent with the girls if I wanted to so that Abby and Zoë could get some play time in before lunch and nap.  I told them that I would do it, and will go in on Friday to start.

Because Every Girl Needs a Pair of Sparkly Shoes

When I came downstairs from having settled Abby and Zoë for nap, I saw some piles of things on the living room floor... we had received two packages!  One was from Nonna with some great clothes in it... she always finds the great deals! A couple of nice t-shirts and two zip-up hoodies that we'll be able to use really soon, as well as some cute summer clothes that we should get lots of use out of next year. There were also coupons, which Mommy and Daddy always love.  Along with that were sweedish fish, and rice-a-roni.

The other box was from Auntie Elizabeth and it contained glittery ballet flats, from pay-less shoes.  One pair are pink and the other are silver with a bunch of other colors.  When Abby and Zoë woke up from nap, they saw the shoes and wanted to try them on right away, then they proceeded to tap around the living room and do ballerina twirls, it was tough to get them to take them off later when their feet were becoming a bit sore from wearing their new shoes with no socks.

First Day of School

Home school that is.  This morning we started out in what we're calling "triangle time", instead of circle time, since there's only three of us and we make a triangle instead of a circle.  I talked to Abby and Zoë about what we'll be doing during this time in the future, which will be calendar, weather, and welcoming time things like that.  Next we worked on a rhyme.  I had a poem written out on a large sheet of paper:
Higglety, pigglety, pop,
the dog has eaten the mop.
The pig's in a hurry,
the cat's in a flurry,
Higglety, pigglety, pop.
with the first two rhyming words in orange and the second two in green.  We went over the poem a couple of times and then they told me the rhyming words and then I'd pause before the rhyming words and they'd say them.  Next we worked on saying it as we clapped out a rhythm.

After snack we did a science exploration.  I set out a sponge, washcloth, and newspaper, as well as a plastic baggy, a coin, and a piece of foil.  I used a straw as a dropper and had Abby and Zoë observe what happened when I put a drop of water on each item and then had them tell me what happened.  After they told me in their words, we talked about what the words "absorb" and "repel" mean.  Next we went out to the porch with a cup of water and paintbrushes.  Both of the girls guessed if the water would repel or absorb into the wood, Zoë guessed correctly that it would absorb.  (On our non-treated wood. )  Afterwards Abby and Zoë were occupied for a good while just painting the porch railings with water.  It would have gone on much longer, but Zoë accidentally knocked over the cup of water.  We went in and got cleaned up, then went to a playground until it was time to come home for lunch.

After nap and snack we were going to do a sorting activity for math time, but instead the girls made thank-you cards.

Grandma Cindy's Good-bye Dinner

Before we met Grandma Cindy, Uncle Tommy, and Auntie Reanna at Bugaboo's for dinner, Grampy came over and spent a bit of time with us, then he followed us over to the restaurant as well.  Uncle Corey arrived after we were seated, so we had a good sized group.  Before our food arrived, Abby and Zoë shuffled around the table from Grandma Cindy, to Auntie Reanna, and Uncle Tommy.  After dinner, Grandma Cindy and I had taken the girls to the bathroom and Reanna ordered two desserts for the table.  They were pretty tasty, but we were all so full from our dinners, and I had even boxed up the meal I'd shared with Abby and Zoë, that between all of us we couldn't even finish them.

As we were all working out the check, Uncle Corey went out front with Abby and then I followed Zoë and Uncle Tommy out.  Once everyone was outside, we all gave hugs and kisses good-bye, even Tikva got to come out of the car to say bye to the girls.

Zoë's Church Funny

This morning during the "kids story" portion of the service, Zoë showed her bible knowledge.  Pretty much every Sunday I remind Abby and Zoë to just sit nicely and listen, without speaking.  Well, they just can't help themselves when the storyteller (usually Pastor Vivan, but today someone different) asks questions, even if they are retorical.  Today a question was asked about being able to see God, and all of the kids were skaking their heads no.  Zoë added, "God is in heaven".  Okay, that was nice... then she continued, "We have to die to go to heaven".  Oh boy, where's she going with this, I thought.  Then, the man doing the story confirmed that, yes that's how it works.  Zoë decided she needed to add a little more information and, complete with hand gestures, said, "But, we want to wait a little while."  Everyone started laughing and Zoë even received some applause.  My face was very red, I'm sure.

COPS in action

This evening, after Abby and Zoë were asleep, Chris and I heard some banging.  It didn't sound like it was coming from upstairs, but I checked anyway.  We listened at the kitchen windows and heard the banging, sounding like it was coming from next door.  The house next door has been vacant for a while, the previous tenants were a very "rambunctious" crowd, with all sorts of fighting and other unmentionable activity going on over there.  Fairly recently, on a couple of occasions, we'd seen some teens going over there trying to get into the basement window/door along the side of the house.  We knew people had recently bought the house, I'd been outside when they were weeding one day, but aren't living there yet.  We gave it a few minutes, and then we heard noises again, so I went ahead and put a call into the police station.

As a police car was being dispatched, I heard the guy I was on the phone with saying something about the house in question being the old such and such residence... they'd had frequent visits to the address in the past.  I saw a car pull up our street and park in the lot across the street, then another officer came from the street parallel ours, and still another from down the street.  Two officers stayed at the front of the house, and one came around by the back of our house, where there's a break in the fence someone could get through.  The guy on the phone went ahead and hung up, then I see some more action outside.  More cops showed up and then I see three of them, with guns drawn, with someone coming out the front door.  They kept their lights/guns set on him and I saw him come out onto the sidewalk... it was the guy that just bought the place.  I was mortified!  The cops checked his stuff and then three of the officers came around the back of our house again.  Chris and I went out on the back porch to talk to them.  They said that, indeed, it was the guy who'd just bought the place.  I told them I felt badly but they said, especially with the previous residents, they understood and that we did the right thing by calling.  We went back in the house and the dispatch place was calling back.  The first thing the guy said was, "Yeah, apparently those are your new neighbors."  I still feel badly and so embarrassed.

Brave Girls at the Lab

Abby and Zoë had their blood drawn today and I was kind of nervous when we first went in because 1. I took them myself, so I didn't have anyone to keep one out of eyesight while the other had the blood work and 2. when we walked in the receptionist looked to the two (young) lab workers and asked if they were okay to do the kids... one lady looked at the other and said "have you ever done a screen for a baby?"  Then I heard them talking about how to hold and draw and what not.

The office was pretty empty, there was just one woman being helped, and as she was coming out of the back room and we were going in, she told the girls how nice and gentle the ladies were.  The receptionist came back as well and gave Zoë a rubber chicken to hold and helped her into the chair next to where I sat with Abby, she then showed Zoë a bunch of band-aids and was letting her open them one after the other while Abby got her blood drawn.  The two girls doing the blood draw kept telling Abby how brave she was (also told her she had a great vein, hehe) and talked to her the whole time. Both girls even got a yellow squishy ball with a smiley face on it to hold and take home. As soon as she was done they gave her a sparkly band-aid.  They were all just as attentive and nice when the girls switched places.  Once both girls were done the receptionist sat with them while they were picking out stickers, and even when another patient came in, she didn't rush off.  She said to Abby that she probably needed to go now, but one of the other girls went out front.  And, when we came out of the room, the older couple that was waiting in the waiting room oohed and aahed over how well and how brave the girls had been.

Everyone was super nice and really made the appointment more enjoyable than painful for the girls, though Abby got pouty and I thought she might, she didn't cry at all.  Both of the girls were interested in how things were being done, and Zoë was even talking to all of us during it.  It was so great to have such a nice bunch of people really caring about helping my girls through this, for them, big deal.  On the way home I stopped at Dunkin' Donuts and got donut hole munchkins for my brave little munchkins.

Medicine Misunderstanding

Abby has a scratch on the side of her nose, she said Zoë gave it to her when they were supposed to be going to sleep.  Chris said to me, "Put some neosporin on it" and so I went into the bathroom and asked Abby to come with me.  She stood in the doorway to the bathroom with a worried look on her face and said, "I don't want a horn on it, why a horn on it?"  I knew she was genuinely concerned, but I couldn't help but laugh.
