Tall Ships Tour Attempt

Angie invited us to come along with her to go tour the tall ships, which are in town.  There are three tall ships, one being the Prince William from Portsmouth Hampshire, England.  We parked and met up with each other and then made the walk to where they were.  We got into the gated area and started down to the viewing area, but a man then told us that due to the time of day and the amount of people in line, they'd closed the line to tour, but we could still go down and view them.  Today was the last day that the ships would be in town.  Bummer, at least we tried.

Aunt Barbara and Uncle Rich Visit

It's been a little while since we've seen Aunt Barbara and Uncle Rich, so it was really nice to be able to get some time to spend with them and have some nice weather to walk around town.  Abby and Zoë were sleeping when they arrived, or so we thought.  We had been over at the condo and visiting with U. Matt and Caitlin this morning, and Abby and Zoë knew that company was coming so I was surprised when Zoë was having a hard time getting herself to sleep.  I guess I shouldn't have been since she slept until 8:00 this morning.

Just after A. Barbara and U. Rich arrived, Zoë yelled for me to come and fix her clips.  Abby was still sleeping, but it had only been 10 minutes or so since I'd left the room thinking that Zoë was sleeping.  I settled her and went back downstairs, only to hear some noise on the floor soon after this.  Chris went up to investigate and ended up coming down with both of the girls.  Both of the girls were being shy, then Abby noticed  a gift on the table that I hadn't put away.  A. Barbara had given it to me to look at and make sure it was suitable for the girls, and I had set it there.  With gifts in hand, pretty soon the girls were warming up.  Shortly after this, Matt and Caitlin had to go and Abby ran in to the kitchen with a sad face, thinking that A. Barbara and U. Rich were leaving.

Before getting ready to head out for a walk, Abby and Zoë each received another gift... neat boxes with learning puzzle sets inside.  Of course then we had to spend some time checking these out and putting everything together.  We managed to get these things put away and headed out for a walk to decide where we were going to eat for dinner.  With all of the excitement, Abby and Zoë hadn't wanted to sit down and have snack, so every place we passed they were both asking, "Is this a restaurant, is this where we're eating?"  We settled on Radicci, which is somewhere none of us had eaten before, and settled in.  With some bread and appetizer to munch on, the girls were really well behaved and enjoyed the atmoshphere of the restaurant,  especially the oil lit candles on the table.

Thanks Aunt Barbara and Uncle Rich for gifts, good food, and good company!

So happy you all had a very happy visit. I bet Aunt Barbara and Uncle Rich were surprised at how big you both have grown since their last visit.

Lunch and Playground with Friends

Leann came over with her kids around lunch time today.  We all had some lunch together and then, after the girls had a few minutes to play in the house, we walked to a nearby playground.  All of the kids had fun running around and playing together, and in the end Abby was, of course, by baby Quinn trying to be oh so helpful.

On the walk home, Abby and Zoë took the opportunity to check out Dakota's spot on the sit-and-stand style stroller that Leann has, sitting together in the back platform spot while Dakota walked with me back to the house.

Around the House

With swim lessons cancelled for the morning, I took the opportunity to get caught up on some things around the house.  We hung around the house a lot, did our walks into town, some art stuff, just a little this and that.

Later in the day Abby and Zoë helped me in the kitchen, and we did some coloring and some Spanish work.

Zoë Quote

Abby and Zoë borrowed a few movies from Angie's place, two of which were Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.  The latter was the most recent one to have been watched so today I said to Abby after nap that she was my sleeping beauty.  Zoë got up, looked at me and said,

"Mom, sleeping beauty is just pretend.  I'm your sweet child and I'm not pretend."

Split Swim Lesson

We were all amped up for swim lessons this morning and had a talk about what kind of behavior was expected and I let them know that Anne was there to keep them safe, so they needed to listen to her.  Abby got in as soon as she was suited up, but Zoë was hesitant about even getting in.  For the first five or ten minutes, Abby and Zoë were the only two in their group to show up.  They had private swim lessons.  After a little bit, Zoë started telling me that she had to pee, so after two other kids showed up; the other set of twins in the class, I took both girls out of the pool to try the potty.  While in the bathroom I talked to Zoë about her whining and she agreed that she'd be better now.

We got back to the pool side and I told Zoë that she could sit out for two minutes watching the other kids, and then it would be time to get back in.  When it was time for her to get back in, she was less than thrilled.  Her nose was running and she was really whiney so I thought maybe she was coming down with something.  I went ahead and let her get out of her wet suit and into her towel dress to just watch Abby finish her lesson, although this meant that she had to nap right after we got home and had lunch, instead of staying up like Abby was going to.  Abby did really well doing what she was asked, and was even brave putting her chin in the water while doing her scoops and skips, and blowing bubbles, although a few times she mixed up the whole timing when to breath thing.

I told Zoë that tomorrow I would ask Anne if I could go in the water for just one or two lessons, but then this evening we got a call from someone at the pool saying that there would be lessons tomorrow because of a fecal accident in the pool... eewww.  Chris showered the girls off very soon after hearing this information, even though they'd been in the other pool at the health center.

Play Time with Kate and Emma

Kate was babysitting Emma again today, so she came over after nap time to let the kids play together.  They played in the play area for a little bit and then we decided to walk to the park.  I chased Abby and Zoë around a little bit and they chased me a little, but Emma wasn't up for this game so we went and walked around looking at all of the flowers.

Pretty soon the kids were ready to go back to the house for something to eat.  It was so funny watching the girls, especially Zoë, try to have a discussion with Emma, who just turned two a couple of months ago.  Emma's mom would love for Abby and Zoë to go for a playdate at Emma's house sometime, so maybe next time we'll go there.

A Visit with Uncle Corey

Uncle Corey stopped by early this evening, for a visit with his nieces.  Auntie Reanna was at a baby shower for a friend, so Uncle Corey got Abby and Zoë's undivided attention.  After some play time, we decided to go for a walk.  We walked through the park, into town.

First we stopped at Popovers bakery, where I let the girls use the potty.  While we were waiting for our turn, we were discussing the 'W' on our door and the 'M' on the other door.  We were sounding out the letters and trying to figure out what they might stand for.  Zoë said, "That one stands for mmm, mmm... Daddy's"  We tried again with sounding it out and then she said "But Daddy is a men".  While we were in using the potty, we heard a man outside the door call for someone.  Abby yelled, "Nope, you've gotta go to the men's!"

After that exciting time, we found Daddy and U. Corey, who had decided not to get anything there, and headed out the door.  We had to calm a little bit of a meltdown as both of the girls were really upset that they weren't getting anything.  We then walked over to a little Italian café and bakery, but unfortunately they weren't open.  So back again we walked and finally decided on Breaking new Grounds.  Both of the girls were attempting to smush their faces against the glass to look at all of the treats.  Daddy had to burst their bubbles and tell them that we weren't getting anything because we hadn't had a real dinner yet.  (Then they informed us that the pickles we had before leaving the house were dinner)  U. Corey gave Abby and Zoë a taste of the bun he got though.  As it was getting kind of late for dinner, we walked over to Savario's and ordered a pizza and a calzone, then we walked back home and U. Corey and Daddy went to pick it up.  Abby and Zoë were definitely hungry, because they ate more pizza than I did. (Although their slices had very little cheese and mostly pineapple and ham)

Barbeque with the Turners

The Turners were having a barbeque at New Castle's 'Great Island Commons' and invited us to join.  This morning the girls insisted on wearing dresses, so Zoë picked out a pink and Abby a white, but then I noticed that Abby's had something on it, so she changed into a little blue one that Sarah had bought for the girls when we were in Oregon.  Abby walked into the bathroom, where Zoë was and Zoë's eyes widened and she informed me that she wanted to wear the same dress as Abby.  I'm pretty sure the girls know that this is pretty much the only outfit that they have that is exactly alike, and lately they want to be in the same thing as each other.  After sorting out the outfits we walked into town, yet again, to retrieve Zoë's sunglasses.  Instead of people just asking me if the girls were twins, I now got asked if they were identical twins.  Everyone commented on the matching dresses and sunglasses.  I wanted to explain to everyone that no, I am not one of those parents that has always dressed them alike just because they are twins, that this has been a recent choice on their part... but what can you do.

A little before noon we arrived at the commons and found our 'party'.  The place was packed, not only with people enjoying the area, but with two weddings and a vfw group.  Abby and Zoë had a fun time playing with the other kids... and their toys.  We played on the playground and just ran around near our picnic area.  After a while one of the other couples set up the t-ball game they brought and Daddy taught his girls how to bat.  After lunch, Zoë found a little frisbee, and after me showing her how a couple of times, got pretty good at it, even if she did let it loose behind her more than in front of her.  At one point Leann was attempting to get Quinn to go to sleep on one of the blankets and I was sitting chatting with her.  Abby came and sat by Quinn's head and started smoothing his head like Leann was doing.  Abby just couldn't help herself with trying to care for the baby.

Unfortunately we were the first to leave, as we were already late for nap time, and of course Abby and Zoë didn't want to leave as the other kids were still playing, and getting ready to go over to the beach area, but they slept well once we got home.

Walks Around Town

Abby and Zoë got their walking in today.  Reanna came over and we walked into town.  First to the post office, then to Breaking New Grounds to pick up some coffee beans for Grandma Cindy.  After this we walked down to the bank.  Abby and Zoë were pleased to play with the train table while we waited for Auntie Reanna and also to get lollipops.

Later in the day, after naps, we took another walk into town.  We stopped into G Willakers toy store to browse around.  Abby and Zoë saw some cute little fairy things they were "oohing" and "aaahing" over, and then they both spotted etch-a-scetch's, which occupied their time.  They were amazed with these things and when I told them we needed to leave, Zoë said "Can I just take this with me?"  I had to explain to her that we weren't at the library and at stores you have to pay for things, that if you just walk out with things then it's stealing.  When we got back to the house, I realized that Zoë no longer had her sunglasses on.  I figured the only place that she could've left them was at the toy store, so I gave them a call.  They hadn't found them at that point, but later in the evening they called to say that they did indeed find Zoë's 'sunnies'.  We plan to pick them up tomorrow morning.

Grampy Attends the Lesson

After sampling our latest baking trial, Grampy joined us for the swim lesson.  He had a wonderful time watching Abby and Zoë learning to be safe in the water and not be afraid of it, as his first experience with the pool, or any body of water really, was horrendous and he's been nervous of the water ever since childhood.

The air was cooler and it was really windy this morning, and even with the wet suits, by the end of the lesson, both of the girls were getting upset about being cold.  They managed to stay in for the whole lesson though.  Zoë went under water with Anne one time.  After watching the two older kids in the class swim under water, Zoë told Anne "I don't want to go under." , but she didn't speak up very well and Anne thought that she said she did want to.  Anne counted to her "1, 2, 3" and zoomed her underwater for a quick moment and Zoë, even though she was startled, did really well with it.  Later, Abby swam on her back very well with Anne.  She tipped her head back and let her ears go under water like she was supposed to.  At one point, when she was chilly, Zoë reached out to Anne, just after finishing her turn on the kick board, and latched on to Anne for a snuggle.  It was obvious that Anne enjoyed this, and let her hang on there, while she helped the next child with the kick board.

Once the lesson was over, Grampy and I got them out of their wet suits and snuggled into towels.  By the time we got in the car, Zoë was in better spirits, but Abby just couldn't seem to shake being cold.  She told me, "I'm not cold anymore, I'm just still crying."

Hot Night Roomies

It's so hot and humid, and we only have one air conditioner, so we camped out together in our room.  We had the AC set up in our room, as Chris is doing computer work up there all day while the girls and I are out and about.  We pulled Abby and Zoë's beds into our room and did our night time routine in there.  It took Abby and Zoë a little while to fall asleep, but they were much calmer than usual and weren't playing around as usual, probably because Mommy and Daddy were in the room too.

Zoë Gets a Package

We stopped at the Post Office this afternoon, and Zoë was very surprised to pull out a little package addressed to her!  It was a Fisher Price promotional dvd and poster, but Zoë could just not stop talking about it.  Every time she said something it was 'My package' this and 'My package' that.  "I have to hold on tight to my package, because it's my package"  "When we get home, I'm going to tell Daddy that I got a package." It was so funny.  Abby kept looking back and asking where hers was... sorry Abby J., I'm sure you'll get plenty of promotional items to make up for it in the future.

Second Swim Lesson

Mommy took the girls to their lesson this morning.  It was SO hot outside, I was wishing I could get in the cool water.  Today we were on the opposite side of the pool, a little bit further down, so the water was a little deeper.  For the first part of the lesson, both of the girls, especially Abby, were really concerned that they couldn't touch the bottom.  Anne helped them see that their tiptoes could touch, but they were still preoccupied with this for a while.  They got to use kick boards today, and practice safe ways to jump and slide into the pool.

Grocery Store Escape

It's just so darn hot and humid, especially in our house, so we escaped to do the grocery shopping, which was much needed anyhow.  We went sans Daddy again, and this time Abby and Zoë behaved better for me.  They ate their snack and then worked on being big helpers so that, once we got to aisle 5, they were able to get out and walk with me.

It was so difficult to leave the store and travel back out into the hot, hot, outdoors.  I knew that I wasn't going to feel like making something right when we got home, so we swung by Taco Bell and I got each of the girls a bean burrito so that they could have dinner on time.  Since Daddy still had work to do, and we weren't going to be able to go out for our anniversary this evening, I planned on just making us a frozen Bertolli meal once the girls were in bed and the house had (hopefully) cooled off.

First Season 2 Swim Lesson

This morning Abby and Zoë had their first swim lesson of the summer, they are now in the preschool class.  It was definitely a nice hot morning for it.  We arrived and found where Ms. Anne, our instructor, was and went over to get ready.  We saw Brooke, and said a hello, she was happy to see "her friends".  She informed us that the water was a bit chilly, so we went ahead and got the wet suits on the girls.  I double checked to make sure that parents weren't in the pool with the kids for preschool lessons and then we got Abby and Zoë set, sitting by the side of the pool with the other kids in their group.

First the teacher helped the kids in, one by one, to make sure that they each could touch, and showed them how to hold the side of the pool.  Pretty soon each of the kids got a noodle, and before Ms. Anne could even show the kids what they were supposed to do with them, Abby started floating away on hers.  Ms. Anne had to remind her that her number one safety rule was holding on to the side of the pool while waiting for a turn.  Both of the girls did really well waiting for their turn, and occupying themselves by jumping up and down or doing kicks by the side while waiting.  Neither of the girls wanted to put their heads back very far, when floating on their backs, but it was great how much they remembered with kicking and scooping, and how brave they were with the teacher.  I wonder if it had something to do with the fact they Abby and Zoë were the only one with a parent sitting right next to the side of the pool (and one standing nearby taking photos).

ChildLight Yoga in the Park

Once the lesson was done, we had to hurry to get the wet suits off and get into the car.  We were dashing over to the park, where there was a free ChildLight yoga session being taught.  When we arrived, the kids had just finished being taught the way to sit up straight and tall.  There were some neat new ways of doing poses, and brand new poses that we learned.  It was neat how the instructor involved the parents.  At one point, we made a big circle and the instructor, Ms. Lisa mentioned the next pose we were going to do, as soon as Ms. Lisa said 'tree pose' Abby and Zoë immediately began trying the pose, so she told everyone that they were two great examples of how to do the pose.  It was a neat session, but before it was over, Abby and Zoë petered out and were ready for lunch.  Luckily I had packed lunch, so the four of us went and found a bench in the shade to have our lunch on.

The girls and I went over to the library this afternoon, and ended up staying for a while.  I found a couple of books in Spanish, and then their English version.  I found a few books on teaching language, math, and other skills to young kids, as well as a Family Cook Book in the parent resource area.  We spent a while looking around and finding books we wanted, and came away with lots of good picks.  It was nice to be in the cool building for a while.

Summer Church

We found out today that there isn't any sunday school program during the summer.  We haven't stayed after the service and "social time" for Sunday school before, as we're usually getting back home to Daddy and getting lunch going.  Since Daddy has been trying to finish up some computer work, I told Abby and Zoë that we could stay for Sunday school today... oops.

After a few announcements, during the greeting time, we saw Andrea and Anna Claire, who ended up sitting with us.  I noticed that the woman sitting in front of us was using sign language with her son.  She signed to him to look at the beautiful girls behind him, so when she looked I had Abby and Zoë sign "thank-you".  Pretty soon Pastor Vivan called the kids for the story time, this time to the back of the church.  Even though it's been a few weeks since we've been to Middle Street Church, Abby and Zoë marched right up to him like we hadn't been gone.  He was talking to them about touring museums and took them on a "tour" of the entryway of the sanctuary.  Afterward he started walking back toward the middle aisle, when Zoë just kept right on marching all the way to the front.  He joked that she knew where she was going.  He then let all of the kids crowd in the pulpit, good thing there weren't too many, so that they could see what he sees when he's talking to us.

After the service was over, we all went to the front lawn of the "old mansion" part of the church and enjoyed some refreshments and play.  I got the girls some snacks and we went onto the grass, where Zoë proceeded to whip down her skirt and undies and told me she was just going to pee in the grass.  I explained to her why that wasn't an appropriate thing to do, as we found a potty.  Some of the bigger kids started to race each other, and both of the girls; Zoë, then Abby, just joined right in.  Both of them were upset when I told them it was time for us to go home.

Walkin' with Auntie Reanna

Reanna came over this afternoon after she was done with work.  We had hopes of going to the beach, but the weather wasn't quite up to beach weather status, so we walked into town instead.  We went to the health food store, and checked out the aisles there.  Mommy let Abby and Zoë get a carob peanut butter cup, and we picked out a fruit leather for Daddy.

We went outside and all took a couple of bites of our treat, and then headed back home.  It looked like the skies might open up on us, but we made it home and worked on getting something ready for dinner.
