A Visit with Kate and Auntie Reanna

Reanna and Kate rode together from work to come by this evening.  We all had some spaghetti dinner together, and then it was time to get down to business... Kate had prepared for me to cut her very, very, very long hair.  On Monday when she was here she had said she'd like it a few inches below her shoulders, but then she discussed it with Ryan, who asked her to just go with six inches to start.  We made sure we had six good inches, so that she could send it to Locks of Love, and then I evened up her super thick hair.  She's going to give it a month and then possibly have me cut it shorter.  Before the cutting, Zoë was up with Kate and wrapping Kate's braid around Kate's neck.  She tried to do this again after I'd cut it and was like "Hey, I can't wrap it, what happened?"

Auntie Reanna did the bed time routine, from brushing teeth to lullaby.  Daddy helped with potty and pj's and then kissed the girls goodnight.  I came up while Reanna was reading the "extra" story to give goodnights, but then later Abby swore, through tears, that I hadn't kissed her goodnight.

Speech Evaluation for Abby

We've had some concerns with Abby's speech for a while now.  She has a great vocabulary and wonderful grammar, but she gives herself an underbite and a lisp when she says most words.  This became a habitual thing a while back so we just waited for her to kick the habit, but since it's still going on we decided to call the school district to have someone evaluate her.

The woman came to the house today and was really great with both girls.  She was very attentive to watching Abby and asked Abby questions to get her to speak, but Abby had no clue that this woman was here to check her speaking.  Both of the girls warmed up quickly and thought that this was just another fun visitor.  At the end of the visit the lady told me that, even though she can see what we're talking about with the way Abby holds her mouth, it wouldn't be a concern for her right now.  She said that Abby is very understandable and that we should just watch for her to lessen the frequency of speaking in this current manner.  Also she said that if Abby is still doing this come fall, to go ahead and call back.

Thunder Storm Swim Sign Ups

This afternoon I went over to the indoor pool to wait in line to get Abby and Zoë signed up for first session of free swim lessons.  Sign ups were to start at 5:30, so I knew, from last summer, that I needed to arrive early.  I got there at about 4:20 p.m., in a total downpour.  With the weather, people were being handed numbers instead of all having to form a line.  Even at this early hour, I was number 42.  I waited around to have my residence verified (since the lessons are free for Portsmouth residents) then got to wait around for my turn to sign up.  I saw that Brooke, our toddler instructor from last year, had a preschool class at a good time and was hoping to get Abby and Zoë in to that class.  Unfortunately Brooke's class was full, so I signed the girls up for a class with a lady named Ann.  Abby and Zoë will have classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, at 11:30.  They will start on June 26th and go through July 19th.

At one point during the waiting, the rain had let up, but as I was leaving the thunderstorms had picked back up.  When I got to the door at our house, Chris rushed me inside.  He informed me that just five minutes earlier lightning had struck the pole and power lines just feet from our front window!  He said that the noise was so loud Abby and Zoë were covering their ears.  They saw sparks burst from the pole... scary!  Our house had power, but some of the houses down the end of the street did not.

Last Appointment with Bonnie

The girls and I drove to Manchester this morning, this time sans Daddy.  We didn't have to wait long in the waiting room or in the exam room.  When Bonnie walked in, she was amazed not to see Daddy.  We chatted with Bonnie about how well Zoë and Abby have been doing.  I let her know that when on more than a moderate amount of cheese, like adding yogurt into the mix, the girls started to head back in the wrong direction, so we'll just keep things at low dairy.  I also informed her that we've been off of the Kondremul and have just been making sure both of the girls get two prunes in the morning (thanks Nonna for sending those!) and they've been doing well with that.

We concluded that both of the girls have a low end dairy allergy, that will hopefully get better with age.  We'll stay away from cow's milk and keep other dairy, especially things like ice cream, to a minimum.  We'll keep the Kondremul on hand, should Abby or Zoë need it from time to time.  Bonnie felt the girls' tummies, which were wonderfully flat and virtually gas free.  We've realized that the girls no longer need to keep seeing Bonnie, which made her a little sad.  She sat on the floor with Zoë and Abby to do a puzzle and then read them both a book.  She said they are also growing very well, staying at the 10th percentile.  Abby is 3 feet 1 inch and 28 pounds.  Zoë is 3 feet and 27 and 3/4 pounds.

After our visit we sat on a bench outside to eat lunch.  A potty pit stop and then we were on our way back home.  As soon as we were in the car, a thunderstorm reached us and started dropping big rain.  A little ways down the road we had out run the storm and had a dry ride home.

Grampy Celebrates with Us

Grampy came over this morning and read some books, played some puzzles, all of the usual things.  Before lunch Grampy and I went to the store to pick some things up for lunch.  We chose two chocolate donut holes, which are huge at Hannaford, with sprinkles for Abby and Zoë to enjoy later in the day.  We got home past lunch time so I gave the girls a quick bite to eat and then attempted to put them down for nap.  They were so amped up that nothing worked and they ended up back downstairs at 2:30 p.m. in separate areas playing quietly.  They had lost the chance to eat their donut holes, but they did eat a really great meal and then started having very nice behavior, so we still had a celebration.

The celebration was a "Good-bye Diaper" celebration!  Abby and Zoë have successfully gone without diapers at bed time for almost a week so we are preparing to rid ourselves of all diapers in the house.  Earlier in the day Abby and Zoë had made decorations.  Abby drew a really great picture of a diaper and wrote, with the help of Mommy telling her which letters came next, 'Bye-Bye Diapers'.

Toys R' Us with Auntie Reanna

Late this afternoon Abby, Zoë, Auntie Reanna and I went to Toys R' Us to find a gift for Amanda's baby shower.  Amanda's twin girls are still in the NICU, but are stable and may be able to go home at the end of June.  As I was getting Amanda's registry printed out, Auntie and the girls had spotted the leap frog electronics section across the aisle.  Zoë had found this 'word whammer' fridge magnet set, similar to the ABC-123 set we had but this one allowed you to put three letter words together.  Abby was immersed in a 'math desk' game.

I finally pulled them all away from the leap frog games and we went on a search.  We checked out bath items, diapering items, toys, and all sorts of little baby things.  We had a little pack of preemie diapers and decided to just get more of those.  While I went to get the extra packs of diapers, Reanna took Abby and Zoë back to the leapfrog area.  The girls were back to playing with the same things, so I checked them out along with them, and then managed to get everyone to put their things back on the shelves and Auntie raced the girls to the check out.

Sunday School Fun

I decided to take Zoë and Abby over to Bethel Church this morning, which is the church that houses the school they used to attend.  I brought them down to the preschool class and had them go potty and then introduced them to "Miss Sue".  There were two girls in the class they remembered from going to school, and the classroom is where Miss Angie has her class during the week, so they were familiar with everything.  Zoë went right to playing, but I had to help Abby get into a little bit.  Just as I headed out the door, I heard Abby start crying.  She was up in the reading loft and wouldn't let Miss Sue comfort her, so I went over to see what had happened.  Zoë said that Abby bit her finger, but Abby was just upset that I had left and had her fingers in her mouth.  I gave her some hugs and told her where I'd be and then Zoë wanted to show her the disney princess kitchen/cooking area.  They decided they'd make a cake with snow white and were okay with me leaving that time.

I came down to check on them a little later, and stood in the hall listening before I even tried peeking in, as I could hear Zoë saying "May I have a skinny carrot too!"  They were having a good time eating carrots and dip, so I just didn't let them see me and went back up to the service.

After service was over I went down to get the girls.  Zoë walked up to me first and said "Sorry Mom, I had an accident." That that moment I could see pee trickling down her tights.  I brought both girls into the little potty and started getting Zoë changed.  Abby sat on the potty and as I was helping her pull up her undies and tights I noticed she was damp.  She started to cry and said "I just couldn't hold it." I gave her a big hug and told her that she wasn't supposed to.  We had talked on our way to church about letting the teacher know, but I guess they just didn't ask for enough help or something.  The teacher had taken the kids in to use the toilet, so I'm not sure what happened there.  Besides the potty accident, the girls enjoyed themselves and sang the songs they learned for the rest of the day.

When we got home Daddy had lunch just about ready for us.  Gnocci with shrimp in a special barilla sauce... delicious!  Abby said "Daddy, how'd you know we were going to be home for lunch?"

Little Miss Zoë and Little Miss Abby...

... how does your garden grow? With basil, and chives, tomatoes too, and bachelor buttons all in a row.  A couple of days ago we transplanted our herbs and tomatoes into the flower bed in front of the porch.  Today we put some dirt in the mini pots that our herbs used to be in and put some bachelor button seeds in there, which Nonna had sent.  We had a bunch left over so the girls came outside with me and played in the driveway while I made an area along our fence to plant a row of the seeds.  After spreading a good amount of the seeds there, we still had a small amount left over, so we made a small area in the back of the other flower bed along the side of the house, and planted the rest there.  Hopefully in about a week and a half we'll start to see some growth.

An Article on Praising Kids

I've been reading some different articles today and found this one on Slate.com's site, about the kind of praise our kids need to hear, pretty interesting.  I already knew where the author was coming from, as I'd gone over this very subject in an Early Childhood Training.

The article focuses on psychologist Carol Dweck's stance that the kind of praise kids have been receiving is not actually beneficial to their development.  One quote reads, "We tell them that they're smart or athletic or musically gifted, when what we should be praising is hard work and effort. Tell a kid he's smart and the only place he's got to go is down, so he'll avoid challenges and freeze at failure. Tell a kid you admire his determination and he'll keep plugging away, bettering himself all the while."

The article also gives findings from some studies done, which was also interesting to read about.

Morning Grampy Time

Grampy came over this morning for a visit.  Daddy had tried his hand at making corn cake pancakes this morning (our favorite way to have them at I.H.O.P.) and we saved one for Grampy to try when he arrived.

Abby and Zoë hung all over Grampy and did a puzzle with him on the counter while I did the dishes.  Abby and Zoë had snack while I asked grampy some family tree questions and then they wanted to play candy land, so we sat at the table and played that.

We all had some lunch together and then Grampy read Abby and Zoë a story before they headed off to nap and he headed home.

Strawberry Cupcakes

Daddy has been planning to make cupcakes with his girls for a few days now.  In light of Zoë's dry undie success I told her that she could pick out the frosting at the store today. From the start Zoë was telling us that she wanted strawberry. When we got to the baking aisle, Zoë saw strawberry cake mix and really wanted that, so she got to choose that and then we got chocolate fudge frosting with sprinkles.

After nap I drove the scooter to the town hall and the post office (with some "Go Mommy!" encouragement from the girls) and when I came back, Daddy and the girls were pouring the cupcake batter into the muffin tins.  They smelled just delicious baking, unfortunately Zoë got into a really silly mood and decided it would be funny to pee on the floor/steps and then giggle all the way up the stairs to get new undies.  Daddy had told her no mini cupcake due to this, but then at the end of the day he told her that she earned one back and she was able to enjoy her treat.

Funny Quote

Pretty much every day or night lately the girls ask us "When we wake up, will it be tomorrow?"  They've been trying to get the grasp of the whole, yesterday and tomorrow, then tomorrow being today thing.  When they wake up they say "Mommy, is it tomorrow?"

Sleepover With Auntie Elizabeth

This morning we packed up and drove down to see Auntie Elizabeth and have a sleepover.  Uncle Matt is in Colorado with Caitlin so it was just us five in the house.  Even though we'd told them where they were, Abby and Zoë kept asking if Uncle Matt, Caitlin, and Sage were in the house.

The girls ran around like crazy, we had some lunch, and then Abby and Zoë took a nice nap.  After nap there was more running around, some t.v. watching, and then Daddy made us a delicious dinner.  He had ran to the store to get some dinner items and made delicious burgers and chicken legs on the grill.  Abby and Zoë had eaten pasta while Daddy was at the store, but they enjoyed a burger (just the patty) and some blue tortilla chips with the rest of us.

Playground Picnic

This afternoon we went to the playground at Pierce Island again.  After a little while, Daddy drove his scooter back to the house and made a salad, prepared some veggies with hummus, and brought some watermelon over so that we could have a dinner picnic at the playground.

Abby and Zoë thought it was really neat to have dinner on the bench at the playground, and also thought it was neat that they were able to get down and play on the playground when they were done.

Rumble Tumble Hour

This afternoon we drove over to Rumble Tumble for the last hour of open gym.  With the nice weather, there were only a few other people there.  Abby was nervous of the big slide and it took her a while to go down it, the first time some older girl, who was waiting to go down, went down with her.

Abby and Zoë showed Daddy the new stuff in play room, and we also checked out the new equipment in the wooden floor area.  We all enjoyed the trampoline of course too. Mommy enjoyed Daddy there to help entertain, while I got to catch up with Leann a bit.

Playing in the Ocean

This morning the girls and I followed Daddy in the car, as he drove his scooter over to "our" beach.  There were some people there, but it wasn't too crowded, and the tide was out.  We had brought along our beach toys, as well as Abby and Zoë's wet suits from last year.  Abby had just started to play with the sand toys, when Zoë began heading towards the water.  Zoë knew that she wanted to go in and had me already getting her wet suit on.  Abby wasn't so sure, so she just joined us to test out the water, which was freezing.  Zoë didn't mind and just started splashing around as soon as her wet suit was fully on.  Abby decided she wanted to have some fun too and ran back to get her wet suit.  Mommy was hesitant at first, with both of the girls starting to just run out into the ocean, but it was shallow pretty far out and both of the girls got the hang of picking themselves up quickly if they tripped, Abby even took to paddling, while pushing her knees along the bottom, to scoot herself along for a few seconds.

Abby and Zoë had lots of fun, but pretty soon we had to peel their wet suits off of them and head up for lunch, which we had packed along.  Unfortunately the bugs were too much for us up in the dry sand, so we went to the car to get rinsed off and eat our lunch at home.  Abby and Zoë kept telling me to keep an eye on Daddy to make sure he was safe on his "scoot scoot".

Short Sands Beach

We had some warmer temperatures today so this afternoon we drove into Maine to short sands beach, where they have a fun playground and ice cream near by.  It was a bit chilly with the wind, but we played for a good long while, using the climbers and trying out all of the slides, then walked along the path by the beach.  There was this big machine that was sifting the rocks from the sand and it had made big sand hills, which of course the girls had to climb up and play on.

Afterward we drove to Brown's to share some ice cream near nubble light house.  Then we got a fish sandwich at Fox's Lobster House, which was highly overpriced but fresh.  I sat in between the girls and shared some brownie sundae and haddock.

Pierce Island Playground

We were able to get over to pierce island playground and have some fun this afternoon.  While playing on the structure, the girls enjoyed a game of follow the leader, where they ran around after me, up the ramp, down the slide, up the climber, and so on and so forth.  After a little bit of that we ran to the nature trail and raced around that as well.

We played a little bit more and then went home to make some dinner and do all of our pre-bedtime routines.

Porch Playing

I had some serious weeding to get done outside so this morning I set Abby and Zoë up with chalk and bubbles on the porch while I got to work.  Abby and Zoë moved quickly from just drawing on the porch, to the railings, and attempts at the house.  It was quite lovely, the girls were very careful to color each and every rail pink.  After they did lots of coloring, I asked them to practice their "T's", both big and small, which is the letter we're working on this week.  After writing some very nice "T's", they used the chalk pieces to do some adding and subtracting.  Abby enjoyed using the bubbles, but then both of the girls started to get bored.  At one point Zoë needed a tissue, so she tapped on the window to get Daddy's attention and then pointed to her nose.  He caught the message and brought her a tissue.  Then he brought the girls inside for a movie while I finished up outside.

Seeing Grampy

We got to see Grampy today, for the first time since before our trip.  Uncle Corey came with him.  Abby and Zoë were still sleeping when they arrived, after a very rough session trying to get them to sleep.  I woke the girls up around 3:30, and they weren't too upset, although Abby was a bit grumpy.  Seeing Uncle Corey, she did go to him for some hugs.  Zoë asked Grampy if he was going to take us to I.H.O.P. and his answer was, of course, yes.  This had been the plan all along, but I think the answer would have been the same even if it hadn't been planned.

Monday evening means Abby and Zoë each get to choose their own meal, as it's a kids eat free night.  They both got rooty jr.'s again, wavering back and forth from having strawberries or cherries on top of their pancakes.  In the end they both chose cherries.  Zoë cleaned her entire plate as usual, but this time Abby left a few bites of pancakes, which Uncle Corey was glad to help with.  We got to check out Grampy's "new" car, yes another one, before giving thanks and hugs and parting ways.
