Little Miss Zoë and Little Miss Abby...

... how does your garden grow? With basil, and chives, tomatoes too, and bachelor buttons all in a row.  A couple of days ago we transplanted our herbs and tomatoes into the flower bed in front of the porch.  Today we put some dirt in the mini pots that our herbs used to be in and put some bachelor button seeds in there, which Nonna had sent.  We had a bunch left over so the girls came outside with me and played in the driveway while I made an area along our fence to plant a row of the seeds.  After spreading a good amount of the seeds there, we still had a small amount left over, so we made a small area in the back of the other flower bed along the side of the house, and planted the rest there.  Hopefully in about a week and a half we'll start to see some growth.

An Article on Praising Kids

I've been reading some different articles today and found this one on Slate.com's site, about the kind of praise our kids need to hear, pretty interesting.  I already knew where the author was coming from, as I'd gone over this very subject in an Early Childhood Training.

The article focuses on psychologist Carol Dweck's stance that the kind of praise kids have been receiving is not actually beneficial to their development.  One quote reads, "We tell them that they're smart or athletic or musically gifted, when what we should be praising is hard work and effort. Tell a kid he's smart and the only place he's got to go is down, so he'll avoid challenges and freeze at failure. Tell a kid you admire his determination and he'll keep plugging away, bettering himself all the while."

The article also gives findings from some studies done, which was also interesting to read about.

Morning Grampy Time

Grampy came over this morning for a visit.  Daddy had tried his hand at making corn cake pancakes this morning (our favorite way to have them at I.H.O.P.) and we saved one for Grampy to try when he arrived.

Abby and Zoë hung all over Grampy and did a puzzle with him on the counter while I did the dishes.  Abby and Zoë had snack while I asked grampy some family tree questions and then they wanted to play candy land, so we sat at the table and played that.

We all had some lunch together and then Grampy read Abby and Zoë a story before they headed off to nap and he headed home.

Strawberry Cupcakes

Daddy has been planning to make cupcakes with his girls for a few days now.  In light of Zoë's dry undie success I told her that she could pick out the frosting at the store today. From the start Zoë was telling us that she wanted strawberry. When we got to the baking aisle, Zoë saw strawberry cake mix and really wanted that, so she got to choose that and then we got chocolate fudge frosting with sprinkles.

After nap I drove the scooter to the town hall and the post office (with some "Go Mommy!" encouragement from the girls) and when I came back, Daddy and the girls were pouring the cupcake batter into the muffin tins.  They smelled just delicious baking, unfortunately Zoë got into a really silly mood and decided it would be funny to pee on the floor/steps and then giggle all the way up the stairs to get new undies.  Daddy had told her no mini cupcake due to this, but then at the end of the day he told her that she earned one back and she was able to enjoy her treat.

Funny Quote

Pretty much every day or night lately the girls ask us "When we wake up, will it be tomorrow?"  They've been trying to get the grasp of the whole, yesterday and tomorrow, then tomorrow being today thing.  When they wake up they say "Mommy, is it tomorrow?"

Sleepover With Auntie Elizabeth

This morning we packed up and drove down to see Auntie Elizabeth and have a sleepover.  Uncle Matt is in Colorado with Caitlin so it was just us five in the house.  Even though we'd told them where they were, Abby and Zoë kept asking if Uncle Matt, Caitlin, and Sage were in the house.

The girls ran around like crazy, we had some lunch, and then Abby and Zoë took a nice nap.  After nap there was more running around, some t.v. watching, and then Daddy made us a delicious dinner.  He had ran to the store to get some dinner items and made delicious burgers and chicken legs on the grill.  Abby and Zoë had eaten pasta while Daddy was at the store, but they enjoyed a burger (just the patty) and some blue tortilla chips with the rest of us.

Playground Picnic

This afternoon we went to the playground at Pierce Island again.  After a little while, Daddy drove his scooter back to the house and made a salad, prepared some veggies with hummus, and brought some watermelon over so that we could have a dinner picnic at the playground.

Abby and Zoë thought it was really neat to have dinner on the bench at the playground, and also thought it was neat that they were able to get down and play on the playground when they were done.

Rumble Tumble Hour

This afternoon we drove over to Rumble Tumble for the last hour of open gym.  With the nice weather, there were only a few other people there.  Abby was nervous of the big slide and it took her a while to go down it, the first time some older girl, who was waiting to go down, went down with her.

Abby and Zoë showed Daddy the new stuff in play room, and we also checked out the new equipment in the wooden floor area.  We all enjoyed the trampoline of course too. Mommy enjoyed Daddy there to help entertain, while I got to catch up with Leann a bit.

Playing in the Ocean

This morning the girls and I followed Daddy in the car, as he drove his scooter over to "our" beach.  There were some people there, but it wasn't too crowded, and the tide was out.  We had brought along our beach toys, as well as Abby and Zoë's wet suits from last year.  Abby had just started to play with the sand toys, when Zoë began heading towards the water.  Zoë knew that she wanted to go in and had me already getting her wet suit on.  Abby wasn't so sure, so she just joined us to test out the water, which was freezing.  Zoë didn't mind and just started splashing around as soon as her wet suit was fully on.  Abby decided she wanted to have some fun too and ran back to get her wet suit.  Mommy was hesitant at first, with both of the girls starting to just run out into the ocean, but it was shallow pretty far out and both of the girls got the hang of picking themselves up quickly if they tripped, Abby even took to paddling, while pushing her knees along the bottom, to scoot herself along for a few seconds.

Abby and Zoë had lots of fun, but pretty soon we had to peel their wet suits off of them and head up for lunch, which we had packed along.  Unfortunately the bugs were too much for us up in the dry sand, so we went to the car to get rinsed off and eat our lunch at home.  Abby and Zoë kept telling me to keep an eye on Daddy to make sure he was safe on his "scoot scoot".

Short Sands Beach

We had some warmer temperatures today so this afternoon we drove into Maine to short sands beach, where they have a fun playground and ice cream near by.  It was a bit chilly with the wind, but we played for a good long while, using the climbers and trying out all of the slides, then walked along the path by the beach.  There was this big machine that was sifting the rocks from the sand and it had made big sand hills, which of course the girls had to climb up and play on.

Afterward we drove to Brown's to share some ice cream near nubble light house.  Then we got a fish sandwich at Fox's Lobster House, which was highly overpriced but fresh.  I sat in between the girls and shared some brownie sundae and haddock.

Pierce Island Playground

We were able to get over to pierce island playground and have some fun this afternoon.  While playing on the structure, the girls enjoyed a game of follow the leader, where they ran around after me, up the ramp, down the slide, up the climber, and so on and so forth.  After a little bit of that we ran to the nature trail and raced around that as well.

We played a little bit more and then went home to make some dinner and do all of our pre-bedtime routines.

Porch Playing

I had some serious weeding to get done outside so this morning I set Abby and Zoë up with chalk and bubbles on the porch while I got to work.  Abby and Zoë moved quickly from just drawing on the porch, to the railings, and attempts at the house.  It was quite lovely, the girls were very careful to color each and every rail pink.  After they did lots of coloring, I asked them to practice their "T's", both big and small, which is the letter we're working on this week.  After writing some very nice "T's", they used the chalk pieces to do some adding and subtracting.  Abby enjoyed using the bubbles, but then both of the girls started to get bored.  At one point Zoë needed a tissue, so she tapped on the window to get Daddy's attention and then pointed to her nose.  He caught the message and brought her a tissue.  Then he brought the girls inside for a movie while I finished up outside.

Seeing Grampy

We got to see Grampy today, for the first time since before our trip.  Uncle Corey came with him.  Abby and Zoë were still sleeping when they arrived, after a very rough session trying to get them to sleep.  I woke the girls up around 3:30, and they weren't too upset, although Abby was a bit grumpy.  Seeing Uncle Corey, she did go to him for some hugs.  Zoë asked Grampy if he was going to take us to I.H.O.P. and his answer was, of course, yes.  This had been the plan all along, but I think the answer would have been the same even if it hadn't been planned.

Monday evening means Abby and Zoë each get to choose their own meal, as it's a kids eat free night.  They both got rooty jr.'s again, wavering back and forth from having strawberries or cherries on top of their pancakes.  In the end they both chose cherries.  Zoë cleaned her entire plate as usual, but this time Abby left a few bites of pancakes, which Uncle Corey was glad to help with.  We got to check out Grampy's "new" car, yes another one, before giving thanks and hugs and parting ways.

Another Drive to Quincy

We drove back down to Mass. today, so that we could see Auntie Elizabeth, who wasn't able to see us yesterday.  Chris brought the batter for tasty rhubarb muffins that he had made the other day and turned out really tasty.  We were able to say hello to Cousin Tony and Melissa before they headed into the city.  Abby and Zoë started coloring with Uncle Matt right away and colored all sorts of pictures.  He also gave them each a Harry Mclarry book, about a dog who looks like Sage.

Chris and Elizabeth went to the store and got some things to cook on the grill for lunch.  We had salmon, tuna, and veggies off the grill, and some foccacia bread as well.  After lunch we set up the sleeping bags so that Zoë and Abby could nap in Elizabeth's room.  After nap the girls helped Elizabeth make pumpkin cookies, which they enjoyed for snack.  Around 5:30 we packed up and drove back home.  The girls were happy to have been able to see family again.

Water Conservation Update 4

This is maddening.  I can't imagine how we consume so much water.  We just received our latest bill.  The billing period was 1/31/2007 - 5/15/2007 totalling 104 days, of which 14 days we were in Oregon with the water turned off.  We wrote down the meter number before leaving and checked it when we returned, it didn't budge.  We used 14 units of water again, each unit 748 gallons.  This works out to be 10472 gallons of water in 104 days, or 100 gallons a day.  If we exclude the 14 days away from home, we averaged around 116 gallons of water used each day.  We can't seem to keep this number down.  We have been monitoring the amount of laundry we process as well as the faucet & toilet usage to no avail. See the previous posts here: Water Conservation, Update 1, Update 2, Update 3.

Arriving Home

We got into Uncle Matt's house somewhere in between 1:30 and 2:00 in the morning.  We made up a bed for Abby and Zoë on the floor in Matt's room, and we crashed in his bed.  We really appreciated him picking us up in the wee hours of the morning and letting us steal his room for the night.

I awoke a couple of times during our sleep, but we didn't all wake up for good until close to 10:30 a.m.  We're definitely not adjusted to the time shift yet.  We gathered up our things and headed home.  On the way Abby started getting whiney again about missing Grandma Cindy, but calmed down after getting some breakfast sandwiches at Dunkin Donuts.

It was weird being back home, after being across the country for two weeks.  Abby and Zoë were happy to see their toys and settled right in to playing with them.  After a little while, Abby said that she was glad we're back and that she'd missed our home.

Waking up when we did, Zoë and Abby weren't ready for a nap so they just had some quiet time in their room, watching strawberry shortcake.  We had taken some of our frozen meals out of the freezer, and it was really nice to just pop some lasagna and garlic toast into the oven and have a nice warm dinner.

Abby went down to sleep really quickly tonight, Zoë took a little longer as she is dealing with a stuffy head and runny nose.  Oh yeah, she also doesn't like her bed.  Once she calmed down though, her tired little eyes shut.  An hour or so later she woke up in hysterics with her runny nose causing problems for her head and throat.  I tried and tried to calm her down, finally I just brought her down to snuggle with me on the couch a little.  Daddy decided that his little girl needed some popcorn with cheese on top and some hot cocoa to wash it down.  Yeah, and we thought the Grandparents were the one spoiling them.  After the cocoa Zoë did go to sleep fairly quickly, however she was a bit upset by the fact that she couldn't have any lip stuff. (Her and her sister had snuck into my room when they were supposed to be in bed and dug a bunch of my lip medex out, making a big mess.)  With both girls finally sleeping, Chris and I were able to collapse into our own bed as well.

Saying Good-Bye

Leaving day is usually a hectic one.  We were all packed and ready to go though, so it wasn't too bad.  PaPa Norm came home on his lunch break, and Aunt Andi and Great Grandma Ehlers came over to say good-bye as well.

Just after lunch Grandma Cindy brought us to the airport and stayed with us while we got all checked in.  As we gave hugs good-bye Abby started to get very weepy.  Once we got through security she was in a full blown melt down.  She could see Grandma Cindy waving good-bye and was just crying and crying saying that she missed her and didn't want to leave, she just wanted to stay here.  Even after Grandma Cindy left and we were waiting for our plane, even when we were sitting on the plane, Abby was still crying.  Luckily she calmed down to watch a movie with her sister once we were in the air.  After the movie was over, we separated the girls so that Zoë was sitting by Daddy on one side of the aisle and Abby was sitting with me on the other.  First Abby and Zoë played with some play-doh, then Abby and I did some things in this "preschool funbook" that Grandma Cindy had picked up.  As Abby and I were working in the book, I kept looking over to see Zoë fighting to keep her eyes open, her head bobbing every now and then.  Chris tried to lean her towards him so that she could rest her head, but she started having a fit about not being tired and not wanting to sleep on this plane.

I went to sit with her, but just when I thought she might give in to sleep, we heard the announcement that we were starting our decent into Denver.  Once on the ground we had enough time to find our gate and get new stroller check tags, and then grab some food to take on the plane.  The line was pretty long so I got the food just in time to get us back to the gate and prepare for our turn to board.  After filling our bellies, the girls were all fueled up and not ready to sleep.  I was sitting in between the girls, with Chris in the aisle seat next to us, and we were finding things to keep us busy.  There was a little baby behind us, a toddler boy diagonaly in front of us, and his younger toddler sister and other parent a few rows back.  We heard someone joke that we had been grouped in the kiddie section.

Pretty soon I took both of the girls potty and then put them in night time diapers, gave them some lip stuff and read them a couple of stories.  They had their little pillows and snugglies, but were having a difficult time getting comfortable.  Abby finally fell asleep, but awoke about twenty minutes later in a very bad mood.  I was trying to pat her, hold her, rock her, I even walked up and down the aisle with her.  Meanwhile Zoë was getting increasingly cranky and I was trying to just calm them both down as quickly as I could.  Abby cheered up, but never did end up getting back to sleep.  Luckily she was content to play with Daddy while I tried to soothe Zoë, who finally fell asleep and stayed asleep until we had to de-plane in Boston.

We waited for our luggage, found Uncle Matt, and headed into Quincy.  Daddy was going to just drive us home from there, but the girls really wanted to stay so we just decided to crash at his house.

Last Day of Visiting

This morning I took Abby and Zoë over to the daycare I used to work at so that they could play for a little while as I chatted with Pat.  Abby and Zoë had lots of fun getting some play time in, as well as talking with the little ones in the room.  Pretty soon it was time to get back to Grandma Cindy's house so that we could go to the Wal-Mart Super Center to stock up for yet another barb-b-que this evening.

After nap we met my friend Wynona and her kids at the nearby playground.  It was lovely weather, and again nice to have Zoë and Abby be able to get some playing in.  We stayed for about an hour and then had to say good-bye so that we could go prepare more food.

Abby and Zoë ran around and helped where they could, then got plopped down for a few minutes of t.v. while the adults tried to finish up before our guests arrived.  Lacey, and Kris arrived with their kids Samantha and Emilee at the same time that Sarah and Jim arrived.  Next the Kossols, Gary and Debbie, came.  Chris started the chicken, which had been marinating in the fridge, on the grill and next the hot dogs.  While food was grilling, our last guests, the McJunkins - Sue and Roy arrived and Chris also put the burgers on the grill.  We had lots of tasty food besides the grill items, we had two different pasta salads, a macaroni salad, baked beans, watermelon, chocolate chip as well as peanut butter cookies, and a coconut cream pie.

It was a nice send off dinner.  The four girls just wanted to play, play, play.  They had a wonderful time paling around together, and getting very messy eating watermelons together.  Lacey and Sarah have been two of my very closest friends for a very long time, so to all be spending time together and to see mine and Lacey's kids playing together was really special.  We really appreciate everyone making an effort to come over and spend some time with us before we leave.

Meeting Friends

Today we drove to Albany to meet a friend from my online "mommy group".  This is the same group that we went to meet up with in New Jersey last year.  All that Abby and Zoë knew was that we were going to see "a new friend".  We were meeting Christen, her husband Josh, their son Nicholas, who is the same age as Abby and Zoë, and their almost one year old daughter also named Abby.  It didn't take the kids long at all to jump in to playing with each other and having a grand old time.  Nicholas was so great about sharing his toys and space with the girls.  Abby of course adored little Abby and was so sweet to her, even when little Abby tried to grab something, Abby talked to her in a very sweet voice and was so gentle.  Finally it was time to help get the toys cleaned up and have some dessert together.  After some quick eating, both Abby and Zoë riled Nicholas up running around the house.  Finally we got them all settled down and they gave lots of hugs.  It was so nice being able to meet such a sweet family, we had a really nice time.

Friends Bar-b-que

We were invited over to the Blanton's for a bar-b-que with lots of family friends.  Before the bbq we stopped in to my friend Lacey's house to visit with her and her family.  Abby and Zoë were pleased to check out all of Emilee and Samantha's toys.  We went right down the street to the Blanton's house, where Abby and Zoë just hopped right in to playing with the other kids.  Teresa had a great spread of food, and all of the kids had a blast playing out in the back yard.  It was really nice to be able to visit with old friends and to watch all of our kids getting along and playing so nicely together.

Abby and Zoë were having so much fun with Sarah that they asked her to come spend the night... and she did!  They were so pleased that she actually came along.
