Bye-Bye Paci's - Night 1

We've been preparing Abby and Zoë for a while now about getting rid of their paci's.  For the past few days I've been telling them how many days left until we give them away.  With nap room issues at school, we told them that we would keep one paci in their cubby at school but that there would be no more paci's at home after we gave them away.  They decided a while ago that we would give them to the garbage recyclers.  As the day got closer, I was getting more and more nervous and second guessing our decision.  This morning I gave each girl a baggy and we gathered up the paci's.  On our way out the door both of the girls went onto the porch and put their paci filled baggies into the recycling bin.  They were excited about it and got into the car happily.  On the way to school we saw both a garbage truck and a recycling truck.  When I mentioned that they were going to our house to take away our things, Abby started whining for her paci.  Back at home we got them dinner and a bubble bath.  We kept to the routine and whenever they asked for a paci I just reminded them that they were all gone and we didn't have anymore at home.  I let each girl pick out a story and after they were done came the tense moments.  I tried to stay upbeat about things and tucked the girls in.  They were crying, but not hysterical when I left the room a little before 6:30.  About five minutes later I went in to calm very upset girls.  There were a few more trips like this, but by about the third time in things started turning for the better.  Abby, who was the most worked up at this point, asked for a drink of water.  I gave both girls a small sip and Abby then just asked to be tucked in.  Zoë was still a bit upset so I was shushing her and Abby started saying "garbage recylers take them away Zoë"  in a very upbeat matter-of-fact kind of way.  She kept saying variations of this as I left the room and even after I shut the door.  This time she stayed quiet and it was just Zoë crying.  Just as I was getting ready to go up again, Zoë started to quiet down.  Right around 7:00 p.m. all was quiet.  Just half an hour, not bad at all.  I'm not breathing easy yet, as there is plenty of night and opportunities for the girls to wake wanting paci's ahead of us... but I'm quite pleased with how things have gone thus far.

Abby @ 2 years, 3 months, 7 days
