Brave Girls at the Lab
Abby and Zoë had their blood drawn today and I was kind of nervous when we first went in because 1. I took them myself, so I didn't have anyone to keep one out of eyesight while the other had the blood work and 2. when we walked in the receptionist looked to the two (young) lab workers and asked if they were okay to do the kids... one lady looked at the other and said "have you ever done a screen for a baby?" Then I heard them talking about how to hold and draw and what not.
The office was pretty empty, there was just one woman being helped, and as she was coming out of the back room and we were going in, she told the girls how nice and gentle the ladies were. The receptionist came back as well and gave Zoë a rubber chicken to hold and helped her into the chair next to where I sat with Abby, she then showed Zoë a bunch of band-aids and was letting her open them one after the other while Abby got her blood drawn. The two girls doing the blood draw kept telling Abby how brave she was (also told her she had a great vein, hehe) and talked to her the whole time. Both girls even got a yellow squishy ball with a smiley face on it to hold and take home. As soon as she was done they gave her a sparkly band-aid. They were all just as attentive and nice when the girls switched places. Once both girls were done the receptionist sat with them while they were picking out stickers, and even when another patient came in, she didn't rush off. She said to Abby that she probably needed to go now, but one of the other girls went out front. And, when we came out of the room, the older couple that was waiting in the waiting room oohed and aahed over how well and how brave the girls had been.
Everyone was super nice and really made the appointment more enjoyable than painful for the girls, though Abby got pouty and I thought she might, she didn't cry at all. Both of the girls were interested in how things were being done, and Zoë was even talking to all of us during it. It was so great to have such a nice bunch of people really caring about helping my girls through this, for them, big deal. On the way home I stopped at Dunkin' Donuts and got donut hole munchkins for my brave little munchkins.
