COPS in action
This evening, after Abby and Zoë were asleep, Chris and I heard some banging. It didn't sound like it was coming from upstairs, but I checked anyway. We listened at the kitchen windows and heard the banging, sounding like it was coming from next door. The house next door has been vacant for a while, the previous tenants were a very "rambunctious" crowd, with all sorts of fighting and other unmentionable activity going on over there. Fairly recently, on a couple of occasions, we'd seen some teens going over there trying to get into the basement window/door along the side of the house. We knew people had recently bought the house, I'd been outside when they were weeding one day, but aren't living there yet. We gave it a few minutes, and then we heard noises again, so I went ahead and put a call into the police station.
As a police car was being dispatched, I heard the guy I was on the phone with saying something about the house in question being the old such and such residence... they'd had frequent visits to the address in the past. I saw a car pull up our street and park in the lot across the street, then another officer came from the street parallel ours, and still another from down the street. Two officers stayed at the front of the house, and one came around by the back of our house, where there's a break in the fence someone could get through. The guy on the phone went ahead and hung up, then I see some more action outside. More cops showed up and then I see three of them, with guns drawn, with someone coming out the front door. They kept their lights/guns set on him and I saw him come out onto the sidewalk... it was the guy that just bought the place. I was mortified! The cops checked his stuff and then three of the officers came around the back of our house again. Chris and I went out on the back porch to talk to them. They said that, indeed, it was the guy who'd just bought the place. I told them I felt badly but they said, especially with the previous residents, they understood and that we did the right thing by calling. We went back in the house and the dispatch place was calling back. The first thing the guy said was, "Yeah, apparently those are your new neighbors." I still feel badly and so embarrassed.
