Cloudy Beaches

We have only been to a few beaches along the southern coast from João Pessoa, and our experience is that none of the water is really clear, but rather sandy and cloudy.  I have a theory about the cloudy water that coincides with the dust and dirt that finds it's way into our apartment.  We saw a BBC show that mentioned something like 41 billion tons of sand dust from Africa makes it's way in the air along the jet stream to Brazil each year.  There are reefs along the coast here, so we thought there would be more protection from the waves and current, but the sand is so fine and light that it's still churned up.  I have seen some photos further out into the water where it looks clearer, but we have yet to see sparkling clear ocean water like in the Caribbean.  We hope to go to the picãozinho and experience the fish and the clear water.
