Dirt Day at the preschool

Araceli wore jeans and Nate's old black pirate tee shirt to school today in case she got dirty.  They have been talking about farms for the last 2 weeks so today's project was planting some seeds and seedlings in their garden.  The kids dug up the soil and added more "dirt" by which I assume Beans meant fertilizer or compost.  They made sure everything was nice and level and then planted their seeds.  About this time, Araceli sees a centipede.  Dirt Day is OVER.  Ms. Jenni said Beans didn't go near the garden after that.  When Beans explained the story to Ari after we got home, she called it a "Santapede;" so Ari asked if brought her any presents.

ice cream man

Although we heard him a few weeks ago when it was unseasonably warm, tonight was the first time we'd actually seen the Ice Cream Man in 2010.  He has a new, really fancy van.  He used to drive a tri-color early 90's econoline-van with squeaky wheels and tinted windows .  The van did not inspire confidence in us neighborhood moms that something illegal wasn't going on inside of it!  Now it is shiny, white, and spic-and-span.  Oddly enough the thing that caught my attention was the "VISA, MASTERCARD, and DISCOVER accepted!"signs on the outside of the window.  What is this world coming too when the Ice Cream Man takes credit cards?!

Aunt Sophie's viewing

After school, Dru and I drove 2 and a half hours back to Avella (very near my parent's home) to go to a viewing for my Great Aunt Sophie.  She lived next door to her sister, my Grandma Cecchini, for 40+ years and so figures into lots of funny stories about my Grandparents.  Reading her obituary, I noticed that she died on the day her husband, my Uncle John died too.  Well, thirty-one years later but still on the same date!  I think that is somehow romantic.  We arrived at 7 and met my Mom and sister.  We fussed at the car trying to pull a 4 foot by 4 foot piece of OLD flooring out of my car (I had brought it from here) so Maria could take it home to make something with it.  It is my old floor from the kitchen that looks identical to Grandma Cecchini's)!  So, in greeting lots of old and middle-aged realtives, both Maria and I had 38 year old linoleum glue on our hands.

Aunt Sophie looked very, very good.  Dru said he thought maybe she would just open her eyes.  He did great though and walked right up to the casket with me to say goodbye.  No problems.  He said it was loud, which it was.  A small space and lots of family tends to get that way, even at a funeral.  I told him another reason that this one was loud is because Aunt Sophie was 97 so it is OK to die... everyone knew she was sick and it wasn't a surprise.  In other cases, a funeral is much more quiet and somber (my cousin Ryan's last moth, for instance).  Dru made the rounds talking to Uncle Bud, Aunt Loretta, Uncle Punt and Aunt Edie, many cousins, and "Johnny Bucko" from TX.  Dru was pretty impressed that he was hit by a train and lived to tell the tale.  ;)

We left at 8:30 to make it home before 11 p.m.  Somehow neither of us fell asleep on the ride home!

Finished floor

Ari worked non-stop on the kitchen, foyer, and hallway floor this weekend.  During the week, he mixed up leveling compound for some low spots in the kitchen.  After that dried, he sanded a few high spots and by Saturday morning he was ready to lay the cork flooring.  It is not a laminate, not a vinyl, not a hardwood; it is a renewable, "soft-wood" floor.  They actually peel the bark off to make the flooring, allowing the tree to continue it's growth .

Unfortunately, unlike the other parts of this project, the kids and I were no help.  He started by the threshold to the dining room by the front door and slowly worked his way around to the threshhold by the kitchen/computer room door.  Only once did I hear him swear.  ;)  It looks great and to step on it, you'd think you were walking on vinyl.  In fact, it has a more noticeable give or spring to it than out old ugly vinyl floor... way easier on the feet and back!  He has Thursday/Friday off this coming week so he'll be polyurethaning it then.  We have visitors coming for Mother's Day but after that he'll start painting and trim work.

Pizza Pasta

Everyone knows my kids have weird taste when it comes to pizza (black olives - EVERY time!).  So I found a super easy, but really tasty recipe for pizza-tasting pasta.

1 lb angel hair pasta
1 can diced tomatoes
1 6 or 8 oz package of pepperoni
1 6 or 8 oz can sliced black olives
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
3 TBLS olive oil
salt to taste

Cook pasta according to package directions.  Meanwhile combine all other ingredients in large mixing bowl.  Drain pasta.  Add pasta to the mix and toss to coat.  Very easy - very yummy!

Dru's birthday list

I asked Dru yesterday if he had any idea what he wanted for his 10th birthday (next Saturday, the 1st).  I was expecting to hear 2 or 3 things.  Instead, Dru whips out an 8 and a half by 11 sheet of paper which is already 3/4'ers full.  Some things made me laugh, like "QUAD," while others were typical Dru (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Last Olympian).  Holdovers from his Christmas list are Wii games and Legos sets (Star Wars).  He also wished for Dinosaur or  "Midevele" Playmobile sets... Medieval, I think he meant.  Unfortunately for me, he will be camping with Cub Scouts (and Dad and Nate) Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  They won't get home until after noon on Sunday.  Hopefully we can cook out and open presents then.

Eraser collection

Dru started an eraser collection last year.  It has been awhile since he brought them all home from school so I was surprised to see that they now fill up a large pencil box.  All of his expendable income goes towards expanding the collection.  Remember the $5 he found at a swim meet?  Well, $4.50 of it went for new erasers.  Hmmmmmm....

GCSTO for the boys begins

Although Acadia's already practiced three times, the boys had their first practice tonight.  Dru is a level 2 and Nate is a level 1 so they don't see each other although they practice side by side.  Their coaches are still the same, Coach Tann and Coach Faller.  There are a lot of new kids.  Dru's group is especially loaded.  They even have boys (which never happens!).  This is a short season... just 8 weeks, but it'll keep them in top shape for the summer time when they swim for the Marlins.

Day two of demolition

We worked all day long again to get the bottom layer of vinyl and underlayment off our (amazing still nice) plywood sub-floor.  Ari had to cut with a very small Dremel tool all the way around the back of the fridge because they built a wall overtop of the original vinyl.  It happened again when we couldn't get the underlayment out from under the dishwasher.  It happened a third time under half the cabinets (they placed the cabinets overtop the original vinyl floor).  In some places they just glued the vinyl right onto the plywood.  I guess just to make it interesting for us?  Gee, thanks.

The kids had a blast though.  The boys ran over to get Russell next door, telling him to bring a hammer and a pry bar.  I gave them specific instructions - no, not really.  I only said 'don't hurt the drywall!'  Acadia did a lot of the kitchen by herself.

It was chillier today than yesterday but the job was twice as dusty so we had the doors and windows open anyway.  Ari brought in the kerosene heater after lunch to keep us all warm.

April 17th 2010

when the cat is away the mice will play

Ari was out the door at 8:30 this morning on his way to pick-up a 0-turn tractor and then cut the grass at the tree farm.  The kids and I had a long list of errands to run including a much anticipated trip to the Library.  We hopped in the old red car, only to discover that one of the seatbelts no longer buckles.  With five people, and only four seat belts, we had to stay home.  We were not happy.  Acadia or Dru could have stayed home alone but Acadia had money she was depositing at the bank into her savings (her "Vespa" account) and Dru was drooling over new library books so I couldn't make one of them stay home.  Instead, we all did.  I sent Ari a text about what a brilliant plan it was to leave me with 4 kids and only a motorcycle or a car for four to drive them in.

We walked back in the house and I saw the stack of newly purchased wood floor for the foyer, hall, and kitchen.  Ah, some demolition work is just what the kids needed!  Dru and Acadia went to the garage and Nate and I went to the shed looking for pry bars, hammers, screwdrivers, and a utility knife.  We started by the kitchen vent and worked our way all the way around to the front door.  We pried up the ugly white vinyl and the under-layment beneath it.  It revealed the original 1972 vinyl floor (probably linoleum) which looked strikingly like Grandma Cecchini's old floor!  It is a yellowy color, Beans says it looks "Chinese."  Beans (no help with the demo) listened to her Cinderella and Snow White tapes while we hammered and pried away.  The kids were unable to lift the fridge and too afraid to lift the oven (the whole hose filled with gas made us nervous!) but by the time Ari got home everything else was removed and bagged outdoors.  We had even shop-vac'ed to tidy up.  It was a big deal for us!

So Ari walks into the garage and gripes to the boys that his tools were put back in the wrong place.  He leans in to the house where Acadia is excitedly waiting for him to see what they've been working on and he says," Oh what did you guys do?"  No excitement, no pat on the back, no "Atta Girl!"  Nothing.  He came around later in the afternoon (once I yelled at him for being unappreciative and rude).

Alice Carson

For the last several months Araceli has had an alias, Alice Carson.  Usually at lunch time she will look at me and say, "Mom can I change my name to Alice?"  I say sure because I don't care what she calls herself.  She will then call me "Beans' Mom" and I have to call her Alice, or she won't answer.

We have these really old Disney tapes (not for a VCR, but for a tape deck).  They have one Disney story on each side: The Rescuers, Cinderella, Snow White, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Jungle Book, etc.  This was a garage sale $1 purchase that is worth more than it's weight in gold to Beans.  Some of the tapes even had books to accompany them, "You will know when to turn the page when you hear the chimes!"  My theory is that after hearing the Alice in Wonderland tape several dozen times she picked that character to play for pretend.  She doesn't act out the scenes or say "Off with her head!" but she does sing all the songs.

Where Carson came from as a last name, I have no idea!

GCSTO Spring

Acadia had her first practice tonight.  She swam with lots of her friends there (Leah, Olivia, Marissa, Lauren).  She has been looking forward to it for at least two weeks... had a countdown going at home.  She said that the warmup was a simple 200 free and she was really blowing at the end of it.  She said "I could sprint that and feel great at the end of the Winter season!"  She was definately happy to get back in the pool.  Although it looked the same to me, Acadia said the water was a lot "softer" than she remembered.

Tired Beans

Our cable company did not carry today's Flyers/Rangers game.  Usually it is not a big deal but today's game decided which team (Flyers or Rangers) would be the 8th and final seed in the NHL playoffs.  Ari had cold beers lined up in front of his computer so he could listen without interuption to the live feed.  About halfway through the third period, Beans crawled into his lap with a boo-boo finger that needed some kisses.  She sat for awhile, followed the game, and then leaned over, body folded in half, and fell asleep.  Little did Ari know the game would end tied up, then go to overtime, and then shootouts before deciding a winner.  All through the last minutes of the game, OT, and the shoot-out, Ari carefully fist-pumped and silently yelled all while holding a snoozing Araceli on his lap.  The Flyers won... and so did Daddy.

Vygis Visits

Ari's friend from forever ago called Thursday to see if we'd be home on Saturday for a short visit.  He was flying into Columbus on Saturday to pick-up a new car.  The dealer was going to meet him at the airport and drive him to the dealership to sign paperwork and take ownership.  He had been searching for years for this particular make, this particular model, this particular color, with this particular interior, and engine so it was no big thing to fly from Baltimore to Philly to Columbus all for a car with 90,000 miles on it.  If you know Vygis, you will understand.  The car, I will admit is VERY SHARP.  I wanted to get in and check it out but the first thing he said to us... almost before hello... was that he'd promised some girl back in Maryland she could be the first person to sit in the car.  Oh, Vygis...  He saw the kids and commented on Beans saying "Whoa, how many kids do you have?!"  He hung out for a few hours with Ari as they caught up on his new place, plans for construction, work, cars, and girls.  He had to get home to Maryland so he left before dinner to get on the road.

Acadia's Report Card

Improvements galore!  Acadia brought home her report card today for the 3rd nine weeks.  The district no longer gives A, B, C, D, type grades.  Instead they use E for about 95% or above.  M is anything from 95% to 75%.  P is 75% to maybe 65% and an L is anything lower.  Acadia has an E in Science and Math.  She has an M in Social Studies and a border M/E in English.  Last time she also had checkmarks under "talks at inappropriate times" and "stays on task," but not now!

Bird Feeders

Nate had Scouts tonight at the High School and made five lovely pinecone bird feeders!  He mixed up Crisco and peanut butter and then spread the mixture over 5 big pine cones.  Next, he put on blue surgical gloves to spread the bird seed over the sticky pine cone.  He topped it off with a yarn string so I can hang them outdoors.  We hope to hang them up Friday or Saturday when the weather clears up a bit.  We have a nest in the bird house Dru made me last year so we'll hang them near the new Momma Bird.

Easter Monday

Ari had to work so he left first.  Later Grandpa and Grandma left with Tilly to head back to PA.  Andy and Jess left last.  They were heading back to PA to see their friend's Dan and Cody who recently had a baby.  Andy was flying out of Pittsburgh on Tuesday because Jess still had a week of Spring Break!

The kids and I spent the late morning and early afternoon cleaning up the house.  The rest of the afternoon and evening we just hung out and read our new books.  They also played Wii.  It was our last day of Spring Break so I didn't want them to do too much!

Easter Sunday

Our day started off perfectly with chocolate bunnies and candy-filled Easter baskets.  Then Grandpa and Grandma showed up with dozens of donuts, including everyone's favorite the chocolate topped, peanut butter filled ones.  So good!  The kids went to the rock park with Grandpa and Tilly.  Tilly came home really dirty!  She even got a hosing off in the side yard.  Aunt Jessica and Ari hid the Easter eggs the bunny had left for us.  The kids emptied their baskets and then charged through the yard finding jelly bean filled eggs.  For being small, Beans got quite a few eggs.  I gave her a 10 second head start but she only had one egg at the end of it.

Ari cooked out on the grill for our Easter meal.  We had brats, hamburgers, and also black & blue burgers (black pepper and bleu cheese).  Jess cut up ten thousand pickles for Vinegretas.  We also had homemade peirogies.... all the way from Pittsburgh.  Maria got them from a local church where crazy Grandmas were working overtime to fill Easter orders.  "Bulger Belly Bombers."  We had salad, baked beans, and other stuff.  Aunt Manu left shortly after lunch.

Aunt Jess and Uncle Andy wanted to buy the kids sandals so we went to Target (which was closed) and then to Meijer (which was open!).  Beans got a beautiful fancy pair of pink princess high heels.  While there we decided to have ice cream for dinner.  We'd eatern ourselves full at lunch, a late lunch at that, so we just bought ice cream and toppings.

After dinner Beans clip-clopped all over the house ad outside in her pink high heels.

Saturday before Easter

In the morning as soon as everyone was awake, the boys (Dad, Ari. Andy, and Dru) left for the gun range across town.  Andy brought with him a .22 pistol,  his semi-automatic .22 rifle and an AR-15.  The range was pretty empty for a Saturday, one guy with an automatic machine gun and one guy practicing with his handgun.  After a safety refresher for Dru, Ari showed him how to use the .22 rifle while Andy sighted in the AR-15.  Dru learned how to load and insert the magazine, all on his own.   After everyone else had a turn on the AR, Dru shot too.  It shoots the same diameter bullet as the others but with a much greater charge.  It kicked a little bit.  The recoil would move him and the gun back 2-3 inches each shot.  It got too windy to shoot (the wind blew over the metal stands holding the target) so they came home for lunch.  We had snacks and beer on the front porch in the afternoon while the kids drove the go-cart through the streets.  After that, we went out to Hebron to check out the wares at Buckeye Outdoors.  Uncle Andy thought it was hilarious that we receive 4 different circulars in our newspapers about hunting-related or gun stores.  Dad bought some new lures for an upcoming trip to Canada, Andy bought shells because they were chaper here than SC, and Ari bought Nate a target for his bow and arrow.  On the way home we took I-70 so we could eat at City BBQ.  It was super busy (Easter and BBQ go hand-in-hand).  After we put in our order we sat at the biggest table.  Beans sat beside Uncle Andy.  To pass the time he was allowing her to play with the big squeezy bottles of BBQ sauce.  She sent a jet of BBQ into her hair and on her neck.  By the time I sat down her blonde hair was a lovely auburn color on one side of her head.  It was clumped into sticky strands, but she smelled great.  Uncle Andy said that he didn't relaize he was in charge!  After dinner we came back home to watch WV take on Duke (we lost).  We also played several games of Apples to Apples.

Easter weekend arrivals

The kids and I cleaned up the last few areas in the house this morning, knowing everyone would be arriving throughout the day.  Mom and Dad were first.  They arrived with Tilly in time for lunch with the kids and I.  We made homemade spinach and sausage soup.  We also bought giant pepperoni rolls from the new bakery in town.  It wasn't too long afterward that Aunt Manu arrived.  She brought with her 6 dozen homemade, from the Church kitchen to my kitchen, pierogies!  You can take the girl out of Pittsburgh but...

We spent the afternoon outside in the front and back yards as the weather was perfect!  Long after the kids were in bed, Aunt Jessica and Uncle Andy finally arrived from South Carolina.

I forgot to write that after lunch, Grandpa asked the kids if they wanted to go to Quarry Park.  Nate said "I call the sandals!" which made everyone stop and look at him.  Dru explained that they'd discovered they only had 1 pair of sandals and they fit both of them.  Of course we're going to buy them each shoes but it made it seem like we had one pair and the boys had to share... eyes rolling.

bubble bath

Last week Ari bought new bubble bath for Beans.  It is a giant, gallon jug of buble bath with a mixed berry scent.  This morning, I told Nate to take a shower before he started his day.  He humphed and grumped about showering until he remembered the bubble bath.  So he asked if he could use it too.  He brought little clickie guys and a boat into his tub of bubbles and had a great time.  I checked in on him periodically and once he asked me to send Dru back up to the bathroom with some hot cocoa.

Do you know the kid?  Know his personality?  Bubble bath is not the first thing that jumps to mind!
